What a pity - possibly the place with the nicest view and a lovely terrasse but the food is simply inedible while the staff pokes noses and plays on the smartphone rather than attend to guests. I hope the owner is reading these reviews; the rooms are dumps for years yet the restaurant is going down the same avenue despite having this super location hillside overlooking Phonsavan.

Not worth the money

Was here on Christmas Day for dinner because we thought they might have something different for Christmas. They had a very limited and expensive menu. Not worth the money for small and uncooked portions of meat. I liked the atmosphere though, the place feels rustic with fireplaces. But they really need to put lights on their road because its up the hill. People can easily be run over walking up and down that hill.

Poor food and high prices

Hearty food in a quirky and pleasantly anachronistic local inn

My partner and I dined here last night and were pleasantly surprised! The portion sizes were generous, and the soups delicious. We each had steak for main, which was a good size and nicely cooked. Dessert - chocolate soufflé - was rich and delicious. Actually, we struggled to finish our meal. The red wine was also a decent drop - the pours were on the small side, but we presume that's because the wine was from a bottle and not a cask (unlike elsewhere in regional Laos). The charming dining room harks back to another era. The wood fires top it off. Suggest giving it a try and suspending judgement - enjoy the friendly service, the wonderfully anachronistic surrounds and remember, this is a regional city in one of the poorest countries on earth so it's not going to compare to Bangkok, Hanoi, Phnomh Penh or even little Vientiane! With all that in mind, enjoy your tasty food and wine and throw another log on the wood fire. This place has character.

Really Really Bad

Lovely view and nice fires

We were staying at the Auberge and decided to eat there rather than struggle down the hill into Phonsavan. The papaya salad was rather under-ripe. The chicken in coconut sauce was delicious. The best bit is the views over the Plain of Jars and the nice warm fires - necessary on a cold January evening. Service excellent.

Expensive, mediocre, it might be your only option

This is a pretty tough review to write because the food here was a welcome change from the other places we ate in Phonsavan, but still not great. However, it was so much better than the other food we had there that you might want to eat here anyway. We decided to try it on our last night in Phonsavan because we were hungry and none of the places in town near our hotel were good. We paid 50,000 kip ($3 US from "downtown") for a tuk tuk ride to get to the restaurant which is located at the lodge by the same name. It was the same price to return to town. The food here is supposed to be French. This is unlike any French food you have had or will probably every have again - and not in a good way. There is no richness or highly developed flavors, or variety. The menu here is very limited. They basically have two entres beef and chicken. Not multiple choices with beef or chicken, two dishes, one beef, one chicken. We tried both and the chicken was better. The cow who donated the beef was a thin, spindly animal, at least that is what we imagined based on the thin piece of steak that was served on the plate. It had a lot of gristle but decent flavor. It came well done and would have been impossible to cook any other way given how thin it was. The potatoes were good but only because we hadn't had a potato for weeks. The chicken dish was flavorful and not as tough as the beef. The meal was not satisfying, so we had to ask for bread during the meal. The restaurant serves beer and wine and the house wine was good. The service like most in Laos verges on the weird. The waiters hover around the table until you need the bill and then are nowhere to be found until you flag one down. The atmosphere in the restaurant is nice, the view of Phonsavan pretty spectacular, but there were so many mosquitoes in the restaurant, that we had to slather ourselves with repellent. Wear long sleeves.
