Local place, local clientele. I had Laotian dishes which was good. Given that there are not much options around here, I would recommend this for a simple meal.

This restaurant has a unexploded ordinance theme. There are bomb casings out front and the walls are decorated with hand grenades, guns and other weapons from the Vietnam War era, when Johnson and Nixon destroyed Xieng Khoung province with their Secret War on Laos. The restaurant shows a video about the UXO problem at 7:30 pm each evening, which is worthwhile.
The food is less impressive, or at least more uneven. The tom yam soup was good but the burger was decidedly average. Perhaps the Asian food is a better bet than the Western fare. Also, the drinks are a bit on the small side. Still, at least it has character.

We wanted an early brekkie and couldn't wait for Cranky Ts to open so we went here. I had the American Breakfast, it was so bad even the stray dogs I later offer my sausages to refused them! cold baked beans.....it was just hideous. Go across the road to Cranky Ts it is fabulous!

This is a quirky spot with decent food and nice staff. They regularly screen documentaries about the Secret War in Laos (the bombing campaign), so it’s a good chance to learn about the history and problems facing the area. The cluster bomb shells as décor are sad, but interesting.

My partner and I ate a late lunch/early dinner here after our bus trip from Luang Prabang. We visited around 4:30 and were the only ones there. We sat outside and watched peak hour Phonsavan life.
We ordered spring rolls (fried) for 24,000 kip (AUD$3.75) and pho for 15,000 kip (AUD$2.30). Soft drinks were 6,000 kip (AUD$.90). Pho was the standout.
Overall we were happy with the meal and would recommend. I've seen some of the reviews have been critical of the food, but these all seem to burgers/pastas. So perhaps stick to the Asian/local offering.

What this restaurant is obviously famous for is the theme and the decor. During the 60ies and 70ies, millions of bombs we dropped on Laos. Many of them did not explode and are still found and removed every day.
The craters restaurant is lined with bomb shells and other interesting war remnants. Definitely fascinating.
The food on the other hand was not amazing. Spaghetti sauce was very sweet and the beef ultra-thin. We were the only customers and had to go find staff to pay our bill.
Overall, an ok visit. I certainly will remember the bombs and war themed decor, but probably not for the food.

Had a few hours to kill before my night bus back to Luang Prabang so just relaxed on the porch here and enjoyed a few beers and Thai food.
Started with the satay which was tasty, pretty hard to mess this up though. Later had a bowl of Tom Yum, spelled Tom Yam in this country(?). This is one of my favorite dishes so know what it is and there's was pretty good.
Wouldn't hesitate to eat here again.

I cannot recommend this place at all! The only good thing was the Gin & Tonic! The Burger was awful! The meat on the burger could not be identified as such- i don't know what the heck they did with it! Pathetic, sorry!

Ate breakfast here a couple of times during our stay in Phonsavan, the service was prompt and the food came out swiftly. We ordered Western style food such as an omelette and an egg burger! Some of the choices include tea or coffee, so you can get decent value. The defused UXO also makes an interesting picture or two whilst you wait for your order to arrive!

Arrived in town after the hellish 8 hour minibus ride from Luang Prabang.
Headed straight to the main street, and after checking out a few menus of other restaurants, we settled on Craters.
Good variety, very good prices and the owner was very efficient delivering freshly cooked meals. The ice cold beer lao dark was just the refreshing drink i needed after that bus ride.

Craters is interesting for its use of bomb shells and other related memorabilia for decoration. The staff were friendly and helpful and I enjoyed sitting surrounded by war artefacts and watching the world go by. The food was good and filling.

I have had their Toast-set countless times and I never tire of it. A plate of fresh fruit salad, two slices of toast with butter and jam, tea or coffee. Excellent. I also recommend their vegetable pho', made with thin strips of pasta which wilt in the delicious hot broth. Their curried eggs baguette is also worth a try.
