Yummy BBQ

My husband bought the Combo Plate (ribs, sausage, chicken, cole slaw, rice) - TONS of food! We easily could have shared it. I ordered a Pulled Pork BBQ rice bowl. It was served in a relatively small bowl but was stuffed with meat. Really filling despite the size. Good prices. Plenty of seating in front and behind. If you don't like BBQ, they share space with a poke place that looked good too.

Excellent Barbecue from Texans

Excellent barbecue!! The brisket was tender and almost no fat. Excellent bark with a nice, tangy sauce throughout. Good coleslaw and beans on the side that came with it and we got a helping of the triple mac/cheese. We don't even want to know how many calories in that deliciousness!! My wife got the barb. chicken sandwich and is REALLLY picky when it comes to barbecue and I usually end of with half of her stuff...but darn you Jake- I did not this time. She finished the entire thing and raved about it during the whole meal. She had the potato/mac salad is said it was also good. We will be back!! We've tried alot of barbecue on the island and this is the absolute BEST :)

Yum! That’s all you need to know!

Omg. BBQ is bbq. But Big Jake’s truly melts in your mouth! Besides a sandwich and some sides, you can order a bowl: pulled chicken or pork with rice. — I asked for a bowl with the beef brisket. Jake was kind enough to accommodate my request. It’s a small, non-descript outside dining area that you might pass up if not looking for it! Limited parking but worth waiting for! Food is brought out quickly. Prices good and portions large.

Brisket and Pulled Pork!

Great lunch spot open Fri thru Sun. Generous portions of smokey goodness with tasty sauce. Sides were equally delicious. Some of the best brisket I've had in a long time. Jake does it right!

We had the Special of the Day and were pleased

We drove by Captain Cook after snorkeling at 2-step, we saw that this place was open and had to try it. I am so happy we did as we were so pleased with the taste and the quality of the food. Not the cheapest one in town but definitely worth it.

Still Open?

This spot is listed as “closed” on YELP and as “permanently closed” on Google. I had heard it was reopening but can not confirm whether or not it has. Hope so as food was delicious. Loved the pulled pork sandwich and his cole slaw. Want to go next week but want confirmation before I do.

Smoke'n good BBQ - they close when the foods run out, so be careful of the hours closing,

This is one of the hidden gems on the Big Island. It is a roadside hole in the wall (actually outside). Its great to eat there or take away. Some of the best on the island.

Staff is not properly bathed

This was a very good lunch. BBQ was excellent. I loved the ribs the best out of the meats I tried. It was reasonably priced for Hawaii also.

Great BBQ though they close early

I was able to get in and get some BBQ before they closed. They were only open until early afternoon. I had a sampler platter and everything was excellent. I ate it there outside on the patio. I would certainly go again.

We were doing the coffee country wander around and look at stuff day, but our real destination was Big Jake’s Island BBQ for lunch. We made sure we got there early so he hadn’t run out of anything. One combination plate and one 1/2 slab of ribs and we were all set. Sat around in back at the picnic tables and enjoyed every bite. It is definitely a roadside “shack” but don’t let that fool you, the food was incredible. These were some of the best BBQ ribs we’ve had, anywhere, not just in Hawaii. And good sides - crisp and fresh coleslaw and great baked beans. Generous portions, great ribs, great sauce, great fun place. Service is pretty laid back - one person running the whole show - taking orders, loading plates and passing them out - but it works.

Definitely a shack, but great food and a personal owner/cook. Jake takes your order at the window then prepares your food per your requests. I asked for the 1/2 rib slab dinner w/o rice. Ended up with 8 or 9 bones, (Jake asks if you want them cut and sauced or on the side), a cup of excellent baked beans (home made no doubt), cole slaw and potato mac. $20 plus 2 for a can of pop. LARGE meal and super tender and meaty ribs with a homemade tangy sauce. Better food than most brick and mortar places. Sit outside at picnic tables. Charge cards accepted. Closes at 3.

By noon, Big Jake was sold out of beef brisket. We were lucky enough to get the last bit. The only thing better than Big Jake’s brisket is Big Jake himself. Mahalo, Jake.
