Had booked a birthday reservation. A few days beforehand they cancelled due to training. Not sure if I will try to go again. They recommended Red Fox which is closed. Was a half hearted attempt.

It pains me to give this review as the Goodstone has been one of our favorite restaurants for special occasions, a stunning Virginia hunt country setting, wonderful food and excellent service. We went for their Christmas Eve prix fix menu and although the food was...up to standards it was overshadowed by subpar service…friendly but inattentive waitstaff, no explanation of the dishes, drinks and water not refilled, and just not the service expected when paying $200+ per person. I suspect the waitstaff were both undertrained not skilled in juggling the busy dining room. Unfortunately, when spending this type of $ and receiving this level of service, we will be hesitant to return.More

We have been going to the restaurant for over 10 years for our anniversary and always bring a nice bottle from our wine cellar. The settling is wonderful, food always good. This year was the same except for pricing... $500+ for two and we brought...our own $300+ bottle of wine. $150 for 4 oz of wagu, fine but this is not NYC and frankly a little fatty (venison was better) but the deal breaker is the new $65 corkage fee in the hills of VA. Never coming back...More

The restaurant is delicious and the service was great. Our family loved this place. Yes it was expensive but that was expected. My kids took photos of their food and my son loved the wagyu beef. My wife’s Guinea hen was great and my daughter...loved the venison. I enjoyed the lobster pasta. Our waiter was attentive and patient and clearly took pride in the care they put into things like our kids’ mock tails, which included ingredients from the restaurant’s own garden. Will return to this place.More

For the prices and buildup from reviews, it was surprisingly ordinary. We were left feeling overcharged and poorly fed.

The Goodstone Inn is a special place. To the extent the setting matters to you this is about as good as you will find in the region, including the inn, grounds, and of course the all-glass conservatory style restaurant itself. You can choose between the...“a la carte” menu or the “chef’s tasting” menu but be aware that everyone at your table must get the chef’s tasting menu if you go that route. This is a “small plates” kind of place where you are hir with a diversity of flavors and food types. In our case, they nailed every single one of the 10 different plates served to our table. We even ordered up $120 of Wagyu, because why not. The sea bass was spectacular, as was the guinea hen. The foie gras was the best we have ever had. Some tips: bring the sommelier over and talk to him, he has tons of personality and is not just trying to sell you stuff - don’t go it alone on the wine menu. If it is winter, wear a sweater or request to sit by the fireplace - this is an all-glass room with tall ceilings and can be a little cooler. If you have a large party ask to sit in the “wine cellar” room, a quaint little cave with a great setting off the main room. I am only upset that I live so close and it took me so long to try it. Will be back soon…More

Without question, this property and restaurant is 5*, from the grounds and the restaurant. How ever, we were very unimpressed with the service we personally received over dinner. The biggest turn off of the evening was the attitude and pretentiousness of the sommelier. A good...sommelier is supposed to assist with the guests preferences pertaining to the best pairing. The attitude of the Sommelier here, Stephen, was very - if you don’t want to take my opinion why are you asking me, do what you want - right from the get go. It immediately put a damper on the evening and regretted asking him anything. To his credit, in the service department, he went to check on why our appetizers were taking WAY longer to be served than they should have. When we did receive our apps they were almost immediately cold because the air conditioning with blasting on the table. They must have been understaffed as the service was suffering. I asked to taste my wine pairing selection, but the waitress poured the entire glass - No big deal I guess. For the record I would have rather gone with my preference than what the sommelier recommended for the entrée. Credit to the sommelier again in the service department; he took full responsibility when the Sole dish was butchered; it was brought out cold despite the dish being warm. They took it back to heat it up and then reserved the same piece of fish… still cold… didn’t end up being enjoyed nor eaten. Food wise, the white asparagus was overcooked, the seared foie gras, although perfect, the platting of the dish was not particularly attractive. Lamb and veal entrées were wonderful. To make up for all the hiccups the sommelier offered us dessert wine. He poured it, didn’t bother to say anything about the wine itself and simply said “ I gave you dessert wine” and walked away, as if he was doing us a favour. Overall terrible experience versus what I’m sure they could have provided. Management needs to remind the sommelier Stephen that he’s there to assist patrons and that he isn’t better than anyone.More

Such a disappointment. Lackluster service as the server seemed to be responsible for the entire dining room area. Drinks were slow, appetizers were cold and the asparagus was over cooked. The sommelier was unfriendly and prescriptive - not consultative at all. The fish (Dover Sole)...was served cold on a warmed plate - underwhelming at best. The other parties’ dishes (veal, lamb) were room temp at best. They took the plates back after I said it was cold and not satisfactory and placed them under the food warmer for a while and re-served them. Really, who does that? I will say that the Sommelier later stepped up - he noticed we waited forever for the appetizers and served them himself. Later, when I mentioned the main course was cold and unacceptable, he did take the fish off the bill and my wine - which was appreciated. For the price point of the menu items I expected much more. It’s a beautiful venue, the menu seems delightful, the execution was such that I cant in good conscience recommend this restaurant to anyone. They need a re-boot.More

We went for our 25th wedding anniversary and they were informed it was a special occasion. We were expecting at least a "happy anniversary," when we arrived and gave them our name. Nothing. We had an early reservation and the room was half full --...despite this we waited for almost 10 minutes before someone came to take a drink order. When they did come, they asked us to order everything at once (appetizers, drinks, main course) etc. which seemed odd. At the end, we ordered coffee that never came. Despite this, the food was good and the building and surroundings absolutely gorgeous. As it was our first time, we're willing to give them a pass on the service and assume it was off due to Covid-19. We would consider giving them a second shot in the future and readers of this review should still give them a chance too as the pandemic has wreaked havoc on businesses and families everywhere.More

We stayed at the Salamander Resort & Spa for a Girls Weekend to celebrate our 50th Birthdays since our original trip to Greece was cancelled due to Covid. We were highly recommended to go to the Goodstone Restaurant for our celebration. After we were seated,...we were pretty much ignored for a while and had to finally ask for water. Not sure if they were short staffed or what, but for the prices they charge, I'd think we'd be taken care of. After declining the Tasting Menu, our waiter seemed annoyed. We did have a delicious a la carte meal. My friend brought a 50 year old bottle of wine to drink and we understood that we had to pay a corkage fee. Fine. The sommelier opened our wine and poured it for us. It took a while for him to warm up, but he finally did. Didn't see the restaurant during the day, but the property looks amazing!More

My husband and I celebrated our anniversary at Goodstone and were blown away by the experience. My daughter and son work at the restaurant, so we had been there before, but we hadn't experienced the post-COVID seasonally changing menu. This new summer/autumn menu was simply...delicious. The chef worked in typical summer flavors in creative ways such as a made-at-the-table gazpacho soup with tomatoes, colorful root vegetables, and fresh herbs in an incredible creamy sauce. The sommelier was helpful in guiding us to wines that perfectly complemented the food and our preferences (we choose a riesling, which was a wonderful wine to celebrate summer with). The charcuterie appetizer was exquisite, served on a wooden platter with mustard seed, artfully arranged with new flavors in every morsel: duck proscuitto and fennel and truffle salami. I had the black sea bass with ratatouille, melding summer in every bite. My husband enjoyed the braised short rib a la Bourguignon with bacon, carrot, and fingerling potato. That entree was pretty much the star of the evening! We also had a chance to sample their upcoming amuse-bouche for the new season, so if you eat at Goodstone, be sure to check that out. The desserts we choose were the apple tart, made by their unmatched baker, Jean-Baptiste, and a chocolate mousse. A lovely end to a lovely evening. Due to COVD restrictions, we were seated outside around a stone swimming pool fronted by an ivy-covered ruined building overlooking a rose garden and the Virginia countryside: incredible ambiance. The pandemic hasn't kept this excellent restaurant down! It's coming back strong and more delicious than ever!More
