Getting gas before going over the Hudson River Bridge and my fiance sees a sign for the "historic district". Instead of going over the bridge back to our hotel, we head toward the river.
After parking in what appears to be a nice area to walk, we find an area directly on the Hudson River with many restaurants. Some are still closed for the 4th of July holiday or Covid-19 but Captain Jakes was open.
Clearly set up for social distancing, we were able to get two seats at the bar. Ordered the steamed little necks and the muscles as we had just had a wine and cheese snack @ Robibero winery in New Paltz.
Food was cooked perfectly and the sauces were tasty. The bread slices were not too big or too small so we could soak up the sauce after the tender shellfish were devoured.
At least a twice a year trip, we have stayed in Fishkill but we will go back and stay on the other side of the bridge in the future.
Kudos to Lauren our bartender/server (and the other ladies) who was busting her but to make sure everyone was taken care of. Her drinks were perfect and her happy personality was very welcoming.

We were gifted with a gift certificate. Though a seafood place is typically not for us, it was wonderful to know that Captain Jake's could make modifications to meet our needs. The shrimp penne dish was adjusted to have no shrimp and extra veggies.
The beet salad was modified, so I could have the cheese and dressing of my choice. Staff were pleasant and responsive. The atmosphere on the water was lovely. All in all a lovely dining experience.

This is a favorite meeting place for family and friends. Normally there is a great view of the river. Once the temperature is a bit consistently warmer, and the enclosure comes down. The menu is mostly seafood but with a lot of other options. One companion raves about the French onion soup. The lobster bisque also looked wonderful. One of us had fried shrimp and two others had the salmon. The salmon was sesame crusted, and was also served with a nondescript sauce, which I think was intended to be Asian, but only took away from the dish. The entrées were served with your choice of starch, including a large potato croquette. My roasted potatoes were excellent. Steamed broccoli included as well. The dessert menu was very tempting. The servers were all friendly. It should be noted that there is a 4% surcharge for credit cards so choose accordingly I will certainly be back and it only gets better as the weather gets nicer. I’m glad also that they now have an online reservation option.

I took my wife and my mom there yesterday for her 76 Birthday and was VERY disappointed with the service. We went for an early dinner to avoid the crowd.
We were sat right away and given menus. The waitress did not come back for almost 20 minutes. I had to wave her over. She took our beverage orders and again did not return for almost 20 minutes. Again I had to wave her over. We ordered our soups which came right away. I immediately ordered our dinners not to have to wait Again. It took almost 45 minutes to get our dinner. When our food came I ordered another another beverage which came as I was finishing my dinner.
Our waitress never came over to see how we were doing. Our food was Luke warm not hot. We finished eating and were waiting for the waitress to return. We had now been sitting for close to 2 hours. My mom had to get up and wait outside because she was tired of sitting.
Our waitress bever returned, I had to wave over another waitress to get our check. This was brought over immediately and then take by the manager to cash out.
At 4pm on a Tuesday afternoon they were not so packed and busy. There were numerous tables unoccupied. The staff was all young and did not appear to know how to perform this type of work.
On the way out I spoke to an older woman and asked if she was the manager and she stated, "I am the owner", I explained what had just happened to me during my dinner and that we were never offered coffee or dessert she responded, "I can't get waitress staff to work, no one wants to work", I explained that maybe the should advise people that they are working slow and give them they opportunity if the wish to eat here. She responded back by saying "it is like this wherever you go".
They were very slow to serve and very slow to follow up. But they were very quick to take my payment for $295. At almost $100 a person for soup, dinner and soda the service was horrendous.
The only reason I did not walk out in the middle was that it was my mother's birthday. I would NOT recommend this restaurant to anyone looking to celebrate any type of event. This was my first and last time at this restaurant...

I have been to Captain Jake’s many times, pre covid, including one time with a large group (10) and it has always been enjoyable. Tonight was a far different experience. We were seated at a corner round table inside and two other small tables were seated inside, no others. (Outside was almost full) I was one of 8, that upon our waitress coming to our table, one of us, jokingly said, “here’s your problem table for the night” referring to the fact that we can be loud and laugh a lot.
So we began, ordering drinks and several appetizers and soups, including a pizza to share as an appetizer. We received our drinks (they were lovely) and then the appetizers came out, missing the pizza, and two wrong soups. Still missing the pizza ten minutes later, we asked the waitress where it was, she went to check, and apologized and said 10 minutes. Ok!
Meanwhile we drank our drinks, ate the appetizers, and then we sat, empty beverage glasses, empty appetizer plates, empty water glasses, and we asked three more times. Finally someone brought out the pizza (30-40 minutes later). And we finally got our second drink along with our dinner (food was very good) at about the same time. Meanwhile, our waitress was standing with others, never coming back to check on us once, without us calling someone, anyone, over.
Still, really not complaining, we ordered desserts to share and one cup of coffee that arrived full of coffee grinds (yes the waitress offered to get a new one that was declined) along with the desserts.
Fast forward the bill arrives, they took the coffee and the one dessert off the bill. Not the pizza!
The waitress was called over and was told that this was unacceptable, and a manager requested. Lo and behold, the most defensive woman comes over with a plethora of excuses, short staffed, one bartender with hurt finger or wrist, one busboy , blah, blah, blah, and then she says “when you come in, saying you are going to be the problem table, that doesn’t sit well with me!”, and throws it back on us. Turns out she is the owner, great customer service right there! Check arrives back, with pizza now off, including a 20% tip (party over 6) that can not be adjusted.
This was not about the cost as we go out frequently and cost is never an issue (have never asked for an adjustment in cost anywhere before). It is about the attitude and disdain with how we were talked to by the owner. Snide remark made by bartender on our way out. Owner and staff talking about us. Very professional.
There are so few places down at the waterfront right now, that it is disappointing that we will not be returning to Captain Jake’s and we will be taking our money (over $700) elsewhere. Truly a shame and totally unacceptable to treat your customers this way.

We had dinner with a party of six relatives, some elderly. We were greeted and seated promptly. Our servers were attentive and brought out our drinks and food expeditiously. Some of the elderly members of our party asked to share plates and were accommodated without hesitation. The food was above and beyond what we expected. The cherrystone clams were pristine and some of the most delicious I've ever had. The shrimp cocktail, were huge, plump and delicious. The halibut, sole francaise and grouper were all perfectly cooked and expertly sauced. The potato croquettes were skillfully cooked - light and crispy on the outside and creamy and tasty on the inside. Prices were on the expensive side, but moderate, compared to some of the other restaurants on the Newburgh waterfront. Overall the food and service was definitely worth the prices. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to friends.

We did not know that this restaurant charges 4% when you use a credit card. I find that annoying. The wait staff never smiles or looks happy which doesn't really make you want to eat there. The food was just ok, as usual the river is the star so will not be eating there again till summer.

This was our Valentine's Day dinner.
Everything went well, great company, excellent food and service.
It’s not a huge menu; but there is enough variety to find something.
For those who care there are 2 washrooms that are gender neutral.
I don't know why any negative reviews; this is our second visit and we're very particular about our seafood. NO COMPLAINTS here.
For a starter we had a clams oregenata; an actual clam in a delicious sauce. Perfectly cooked and executed.
I tried the sole francaise with a potato croquet and broccoli. Both the sole and potato were amazing. Hot, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. I'm not a broccoli fan, so I can't comment on the vegetable.
Although the size of the fillet was closer to the size of a flounder fillet. It was still toothsome morsel.
I've caught and cleaned enough of both, but nevertheless it wasn't over cooked.
She had the seared sea scallops.
Not even a Michelin star celebrity chef would have a complaint with the way they were prepared.
The portions are just enough and the flavors complimentary.
The margarita wasn't boozy, too sweet, or unbalanced. It was a sipping drink that went down smoothly.
She thoroughly enjoyed her Bloody Mary. It too, was just right.
The espresso had actual schiuma!
You need a machine for that.
I just can't believe this restaurant isn't on coast; where really fresh seafood is always available and the patrons are used to exceptional seafood prepared and served to perfection.
That's why the five star rating; if I could give an extra star I would.

I just had dinner here. I have to say that they made sure we were made comfortable the moment we walked in. We were seated promptly the servers were accommodating our special requests. I have to say the food also is great and all the special requests accommodated. Will come back here whenever I am in the area.

First of all, I have been to Captain Jake's numerous times and after reading other reviews I can't believe I have not reviewed before this. Went on Saturday night a party of 3 and reservations were made. Arrived a little early and we're promptly seated on the patio as reserved. Ordered drinks and appetizers then our meal. My nephew ordered the sesame salmon while his wife and I had the cod with crabmeat. We were all very satisfied with the taste, quality and portions. Service was great and for a busy Saturday night we never felt rushed so we were able to enjoy the views of the Hudson River and a relaxed meal.
As I stated, I have been here numerous times with family, friends and solo. Weekends or week days and large or small groups we have never been disappointed. Service and food are consistently good . Prices are reasonable for the location. Looking forward to returning soon.

The atmosphere and scenery was nice since it’s along the Hudson River. I suppose THAT is what you’re paying for. The food was mediocre for the prices. Do NOT order mashed potatoes as your side as it was tasteless and dry. Everyone in our party described their food as “OK”.

Small, cozy restaurant that resides in the shadow of Billy Joe's. Captain Jake's has a much better chef than most of the local restaurants in my opinion.
Though they have a small menu, everyone in your party can find something. My partner does not eat fish (seafood is the primary dish here), they did have a beautiful big burger. They also offer chicken fingers for kids. My fish tacos were absolutely the best fish tacos I have ever had.

We were pleasantly surprised with the menu and great bar dining service. Suzy was a great bar hostess and we thoroughly enjoyed our lunch. The food is fabulous and met my wife's gold standard for Sole Fran chaise. My BBQ Pulled Pork on a large Kaiser Bun with Cole slaw on it with fries, was excellent. Look out Billy Joe's this place rivals your best.

We stopped here when visiting the area and had dinner with friends. We were able to get a table on the outside patio overlooking the Hudson River. It was a beautiful day and everything was wonderful. We had calamari, fish tacos and drinks. Everything was fresh and tasted great. Service was first class, friendly and quick. We recommend this restaurant if you are in the area.
