The queue outside Mr Kaai before it opens at 12:00 stands testimony to the restaurants reputation. But now its no longer just locals but also tourists frequenting this characterful place. It is still very good, but a year on, I noticed a drop in quality and a rise in prices. For now, I'll return but I am afraid that "fame" has done them no favour.

A little treasure tucked away in Sedgefield. Billed as a fish and chip shop I was surprised to have snails in garlic! And how good they were too!
So too was the hake and chips. Fresh and cooked right in front of you. The service was good too and it all happens in an outdoor setting just off the side road. Different but it makes it memorable.

We were on a road trip & visited Sedgefield for a few days & our local friends suggested this restaurant. Normally 1 judges a place by busyness & we had to return a bit later as it was full which was interesting as it was a weekday at lunchtime
Returned for a later lunch when it was much quieter & we managed to get a table . We were immediately attended to & ordered a variety of dishes including the well known fish & chips. They said they did not have large so settled for the medium hake & it was pretty large. Our party were happy with the calamari as well , only 1 disappointment was the cous cous salad
Overall it was good experience & we would return again . The place is neatly tucked away off the main road of Sedgefield

I had heard about Mr Kaai's Fish and Chips for years, and finally went there to try their fish and chips.
How disappointing it was! Served in a takeaway pizza box, with a very tasteless tartare sauce. Way overpriced compared the the other fish and chip places near by. The food was ok, but just too expensive!

We stopped in to this small, unassuming restaurant for a casual lunch. Wow! We were blown away by the excellent seafood, friendly service and value for money. My hubby and I shared a seafood platter. We had 2 beautiful Hake fillets, 6 large juicy prawns, 8 mussels in a delicious creamy garlic sauce, tender calamari strips, chips and rice. Everything was perfectly cooked and tasty. Service was friendly and fast. The restaurant is unlicensed, so we brought our own wine. Our waitress happily supplied an ice bucket, glasses and extra ice. We really enjoyed the platter and couldn't finish the 2nd piece of fish, which was nicely saved in a takeaway box for us. We ate like kings, for a fraction of what we've been charged at other fancy restaurants. Can definitely recommend this establishment.

Okay, so the secret is out. Yet, we found a table without booking but it is recommended that you rather book ahead.
The food is still the best in the area, particular the platter for 2. They do cater for people that prefer not to have seafood but obviously seafood is still the main thing here. They are not licenced to serve alcohol but you are welcome to take your own alcoholic beverages.

Hidden away off the N2 in Sedgefield is this superb gem of a fish restaurant.
Mr Kaai is a small outdoor restaurant with tables set up in a courtyard. Nevertheless, the ambience is homely, pleasant and genuine.
As for the food, that was excellent. We shared a seafood platter consisting of the freshest grilled and fried fish (really fresh always tastes better), delicious large prawns, tasty mussels and calamari, and crispy fries. Do remember though to take your own beer and wine.
The experience overall was superb, with a modest setting (a good thing), a most enjoyable meal and attentive, confident and friendly service.
Highly recommended!

I visit Mr Kaai several times on my holiday to Sedgefield every year. Thankfully, it never ceases to disappoint. Service is always friendly and efficient. And their fried fish and chips the best in town. They are a little on the pricey side now but their portions are always huge. I have the small hake and it is certainly more than enough. The most perfectly fried light batter and tasty crispy chips. Take your own wine as they do not have a liquor licence, but they supply the glasses and ice.

We found this little spot while staying in Sedgefield. It is very small so if you want to eat at the restaurant you need to book in advance. The staff were friendly and helpful. The fish and chips and the calamari were fantastic. Definitely worth the visit if you are in the area. They also do takeaway though we preferred the sit down option.

What a disappointment. Battered Hake, beautifully crisp, drifting in stale oil. The stale taste lingered until the following day. This was my third attempt at Mr Kaai in three months. Third disappointment..,

Had a quick lunch. We all had hake. Portions are good. They didn’t have large hake, but the medium portion were more than enough. Small portion also very good. Ordered one medium chips between 4 people and was enough for us. Coleslaw also good.

The best Hake and Calamari in the Garden Route! Light and crispy coating, beautifully seasoned. Sauces were delicious too. Remember to take a few beers or wine if you need to, they are unlicensed. Call ahead for take out also possible. Excellent quality all round!
