Nice greeting from the rude chef ( who is not rude at all but certainly fiesty ) &pleasant surprise turned out to be Henrietta who used to be front of house at The Gallery restaurant across the road. The restaurant is very pleasant and we started with melon and biltong for my wife and venison carpaccio with fig for me. For mains we had slow cooked slices of Karoo lamb served with an orange and grapefruit salad and an olive, greens and feta salad - I know it sounds bizarre but it worked perfectly and was quite delicious. This was washed down with a bottle of superb Fernskloof Rosé and we finished with 2 glasses of sweet local fortified wine.
The total bill including tip was just 30 pounds.
For good honest cooking and great value for money and a nice lady we would certainly recommend.

Booked a large table very last minute for a birthday. When we arrived balloons had been setup and the table specially decorated on the owners own accord. It was the only restaurant in town that was full of patrons, creating a vibrant atmosphere! Enjoyed the whole experience. Would definitely go back!

Looking at the menu and being approached by the owner on looking in earlier, we expected better. The starter of cauliflower in Parmesan with a dip sounded good, but when it arrived it was a portion for 1 and it was not hot. The mains of beer battered fish and grilled fish were not up to standard either. Also somewhat lacklustre dismissive service.

Contrary to other reviews we were not impressed by the food at the Rude Chef. It is a pleasant setting in a relaxed atmosphere. The food however reminded me of a plate of food in my hostel days at university. There was nothing special about it, no garnish and frankly it was not appealing either nor tasty . For R140 I expected a tasty plate of food, well presented and prepared with care. I had the pulled pork and the medium portion was okay but lacked flavor . It is served with mashed potatoes and two very bland vegetable dishes, 4 chunks of dry butternut and creamed spinach with a hint of a slice or two courgette and green beans. The Greek salad for R70 was the smallest I ever had in any restaurant. My friend had the leg of lamb which was three slices, it was dry and lacked taste and flavor. For us it was a disappointment and definitely not worth it. There are other eateries in Prince Albert that offers much better food.

One day, my dog and I were allowed to have coffee at the hotel across the road. The very next day, while sitting in the same outside area waiting to order breakfast, the hotel manager asked me to leave, because dogs weren't allowed!?
So I walked across the road and asked the owner of The Rude Chef, Henriette if she served breakfast. Being more a lunch/dinner restaurant, breakfast is not even an item on the menu, but Henriette went out of her way to organise a magnificent full house breakfast for me. As good, if not better than other better-known breakfast venues in Prince Albert. And at a great price too. And it's pet-friendly!
3 other people saw me eating breakfast on the restaurant stoep, and they too ordered breakfast, which Henriette and staff also happily provided.
A classic case on one's opportunity lost being another's opportunity gained.
Well done to The Rude Chef!

Our dinner was booked via our host Colleen. We were allowed to bring our own wine and we gladly paid the corkage fee. The food was traditional South African food, like boboti and leg of lam. We enjoyed our meals especially the apple tart desert. All meals are well priced. We also had a very friendly gentleman serving us which made the whole experience even more enjoyable. Can definitely recommend

Yes, our recent visit to this eatery was not a positive experience. No contact tracing, as required by Covid protocol, was in place.
Our reserved outside table was not ready.
The person who appeared to be the manageress rudely berated me when I enquired if any of the reserved, laid tables was ours. She did not wear a mask at any stage during our interactions.
As far as the food goes, run of the mill country fair. The Bototie was quite tasty, the mashed potatoes cold. The roast pumpkin was nice, but I could not get myself to eat the chunky swiss chard and zucchini mixture, in a greyish sauce.
My partner enjoyed his lamb dish, sides were the same.
The apple pie with ice-cream was enjoyable.
This manageress seriously needs to work on people skills and customer relations.

It wasn't the chef that was rude (there was no chef on duty) but the manager/owner? She didn't greet us, didn't bother with us and other customers either, so yes, she was rude.
The Roast Lamb was served with the standard veg which seem to have been served there forever. Creamed spinach, mashed potatoes, butternut. My Camenbert starter should have been served with roosterkoek, and it came with 4 narrow fingers of the roosterkoek only.
There were only 3 restaurants open in Prince Albert that night, and there wasn't a great deal to choose from, and I will not be returning to the Rude Chef again.

This restaurant was new to us when we visited Prince Albert in March and we had excellent food here on two evenings.
Henrietta has created a lovely Bistro atmosphere which is something Prince Albert needed, along with great food and wine.
We look forward to visiting many times next year when we stay in the town.

Henriëtte offers delicious home cooked food selections such as pulled pork, leg of lamb and bobotie with veggies. There are also a selection of lighter meals and vegetarian options. Her service was excellent and the food delicious.

Our guesthouse host booked us a table [4pax] . On arrival we asked to sit outside as it was very hot, the owner said we could sit any where. We went to sit at a table on the verandah and she abruptly, and in a admonishing tone, said we could not sit there as they table was reserved. She even grabbed the chair away from my friend. The table was clear; there was no reserved sign on the table. I wanted to walk out but my friends and wife said no. The food was very good though so it was not a bad experience, but the owner needs to go to charm school and learn how to deal with people politely.

Dearest Keith It’s great that you enjoyed our food. But it’s a pity that your account re the table issue is not correct. You were advised that you could sit anywhere INSIDE. But then you went out to verandah and started moving tables (which was booked) and chairs around.
Had you told us that you wanted to sit outside we gladly would have carried an inside table outside!! It’s all about good manners!!!

Lovely local wines to choose from... Extensive wine list.
I had the traditional bobotie with some scrumptious veggies including butternut, carrots, baby marrows and a cucumber salad on the side.
My partner nibbled on a juicy chicken breast with some crunchy chips plus a green salad on the side.
Tasty food, great Pinotage and a relaxing atmosphere. Just note that the restaurant can get very busy so to book in advance would be a good idea.
Compliments to the Rude Chef.

They went OUT of their way to receive us for my partner's birthday. As vegans you never expect much and our options are always very limited, but we were blown away with the veggie stack. Highly recommended even for non-vegans. Wonderful service and reception. Thank you!!

When looking for somewhere to eat in the main the main street of Prince Albert you are really spoilt for choice but The Rude chef is not to be missed. Dishes on offer have an authentic South African twist. My husband and I shared the lamb platter which was excellent, the lamb was tender and each portion flavoured differently. This is the lamb I have been searching for. The restaurant is not pretentious, we sat outside and watched the passers-by with a perfect karoo sunset.
