The hop on/off bus on the Blue circuit stops outside this friendly good value restaurant and bistro bang on the beach and small fishing harbour. Our young, novice waiter Dumisani was a delight. Not pushy or loud, just doing his job really well. The salads were pleasant and filling for lunch. At around 150 Rand each (£7.50) they were excellent value. But the menu offers dishes ranging from thick fillet steaks to a plate full of fried calamari and puddings to match. Really good for family outings.

We visited there today for a early evening dinner. Arrived at 1730 and many table were free. By 1830 the place was packed. Our waiter ‘Pardon ‘ and all of the team were extremely helpful and had a good knowledge of the menu. Now the food. A wonderful half bowl of mussels followed by a steak. my wife had the fish pate and traditional fistful and chips.all was cooked perfectly and presented in a professional manner. No complaints and would highly recommend this restaurant. Well done to all concerned in making this a enjoyable evening Regards Geoff

A beautiful restaurant on the pier. Setting in the restaurant is themed on an old ship with the different named cabins, just made for a relaxed and "drifty" vibe. The wait staff was friendly and ever so helpful with hands on knowledge of their menu. I had a small incident with a messed up cocktail but it was all efficiently handled. The manager on duty was circulating and making conversation which added to the overall warmth of the place

We have enjoyed lunch once evry month the last 10 years...and experienced good service and great food! BUT on 19 January 2020 things changed! My wife is extremely allergic to gluten. The last 10 times we asked for her fish to be grilled on a wheat free grill- this was accepted and offered with a 10 minutes waiting time as it meant cleansing. The service was highly appreciated in the past. Then on the 19th we met utter disgusting confrontation from the young lady at the till. When my wife said that they always gave her gluten free fish in the past she simply said it is not the case any more. I got hold of the manager and he tried to diffuse the situation but the staff in the kitchen were not helpful at all. We have removed Mariner's Wharf from our list! This restaurant does not have any feelings towards people with serious allergies!!! Foreigners be aware!

Dear Eddie, many thanks for taking the time to review Mariner's Wharf. We have been in discussion with the Bistro manager regarding this incident. Unfortunately you caught the Bistro on a Sunday which is a very busy day for us where it is difficult to make exceptions for everyone, considering fried fish in a flour batter is the staple dish being served. I know that the manager did fulfill your wishes but we apologise if the front-end staff were abrupt and not very helpful. This is not our usual standard of service. Many thanks, and we do hope you will visit us again.

Location on the Hout Bay harbour, sea gulls shrieking nearby, shades of green and blue in the water nearby, the odd seal barking from within the harbour..... unique and fun. You may have to wait in line to place your order and get your food. While you wait, your party can find a table outside or explore the surrounds. Their fish and chips is really good, and Mariners Wharf itself is somewhat iconic. It’s a definite place for lunch during a drive around the peninsula, just before or after going over Chapman’s Peak.

We love this place! We were so relieved to see that everything has returned to normal and Mariner's Wharf is fully operational again after the hard lockdown. This place is pure perfection! Everything from the location, the food, the service, the drinks - just perfect! The seafood is fresh and the chefs know just how to prepare it. The manager and the staff are friendly and attentive making you feel right at home when walking in. Make sure to try the Merry Mermaid cocktail - simply delish!

I phoned the restaurant before leaving home to ask if the 1st floor restaurant was open, the lady who answer informed me that it was open. I drove 40km just to get there and find the restaurant closed due to covid rules. I specially specified the 1st floor restaurant, don't understand what's the point of giving the wrong information to people. Very unprofessional and rude in must say.

Dear "Gradeco A" I apologise profusely for the misunderstanding and our people answering the phones have all been retrained. Our upstairs restaurant unfortunately is not open yet however our fast food Seafood Bistro and Fishmarket are. We will make public announcements on our opening in advance but for now we refer people to our website for all relevant updates and opening times of our departments. Assuring you of our best intentions. Regards Shaun Bloch

Fantastic family restaurant that provides great seating options with excellent views. The service was friendly, efficient and provided great space between courses. The variety of seafood were all excellent but the stand out dish was the seared tuna! Absolutely brilliant. Other dishes which I would recommend are: - Sole - line fish (specifically the kabeljou) - simply calamari Portions were generous and good value for money for the quality of food served.

Being a local I visit the ground floor take-away, usually once a week throughout the year, and always receive a nice welcome from the manager and his staff. Today I decided to try the upstairs testaurant. Being on my own I needed a relatively inconspicuous table but was shown a table for 4 which wasn't quite right for me. There was a more suitable table, also for 4 in the corner, and I asked the lady if I could rather sit there. She said that would be fine and said she would get someone to clear the table for me. So I waited and I presume it was the manager who then came and said in contradiction of the lady that I must take the table that I had been shown to and had already said was unsuitable. I might add too that the restaurant had lots of available tables, many tables for two which they could have offered me. Being given the attitude that I must like it or lump it and left dangling without an offer of another table, it was a no-brainer for me to lump it and leave. To the manager and lady receiving customers, all I can say is in doing that particular job, a warm welcome and the right seating for the customer is as important as the meal itself. Just a little further down the harbour there is a restaurant called the LookOut where I was warmly welcomed and had a very enjoyable meal in lovely surroundings. I can highly recommend the LookOut as well as the downstairs take-away section of the mariners Wharf.

Dear "Dr_Who_13" I am sorry to hear about this situation and I can only imagine management wanted you to have a 4-seater at the window (with the restaurant not being full) rather than a 2-seater or another table that was still dirty and needed to be cleared and sanitised. Either way, this was poor communication between managers and also to you and we apologise. I am sure if this did not happen, you would have enjoyed yourself (as you have in our downstairs establishment) and would be been writing a good review . Assuring you of our best intentions.

Well this place prides itself on fresh fish & seafood and it certainly didn’t disappoint. We ordered 2 fish (hake) & chips and they were excellent - the batter was lovely & crispy and the bread served with it was to die for - like a walnut bread but so moist. Service was great too - if I could I would have given this 4.5 stars, only marked down slightly for its location & the fact that inside is very dark although we eat outside on the terrace.

Looked, as so often, as a ood place to have seafood, as the location, right on the bay, was promissing. Reception and service (thank you Mathew) very friendly. Asked specifically at the reception whether they had lobster, although it was not the seasonfor lobster. "Yes, we have lobster, but frozen". Ordered oysters, 10 prawns with rice, the now "fresh" lobster, with chips, wine. LOBSTER would be 600gr and 4 times the price of the 3 "Lobster" tails "because of the head and claws". What arrived were chips drenched in butter, 2 baby CRAYFISH, size in total smaller than the prawns, but no lobster. Confronted with this, service claimed " we call them lobster", even though real lobster are depicted on their toilet doors. I wonder whether I can call a burger for a prime rib steak back home. Avoid.

Thanks for this feedback. I have checked the quality personally after your feedback and all seems to be up to our usual high standards. It is a pity you didn't contact our manager on site as they would have replaced your order and ensured you left completely satisfied. Great seafood and awesome setting on the beach with good vibes. We had the family pack which gave us a variety of seafood and ordered additional hake and chips and calamari and chips. The seafood was very fresh and tasty! The red tourist bus drops you off right by the harbour. We even had a live band singing while eating. Only downside is the long queue as Mariner’s Wharf take away is very popular and we were waiting around 30mins to order our food. The staff are very accommodating and friendly. Souvenir shops are also available if you want to buy something. Overall delicious fresh seafood and highly recommended.

The Grill offers a simple setting located directly on Hout Bay with fantastic views of the water and the mountains. The integrity of the food is amazing. Simple fisherman's dishes with amazing sauces, wines and variety of fresh seafood cooked to perfection. We enjoyed it tremendously and will definitely go back whenever back in South Africa.

My wife and I went to the Mariners wharf restaurant expecting to be completely underwhelmed in this tourist area. I began my meal with the seafood chowder which I thought was very good. I then ordered the fish and chips. I have to say they were some of the best fish and chips I have ever eaten. And being an ex Brit I consider myself to be something of a fish and chip afficionado🙄 The fish (hake) was lightly battered, very moist, not at all over cooked. I also enjoyed the thick cut chips. I finished off with an excellent cheesecake. My wife had the Pavlova which she also thoroughly enjoyed.

This used to be a notable ‘destination’ restaurant over very many years - buzzing, great food, memorable service. But after tonight’s performance ( amidst half-empty dining spaces ) it’s on the decline and I wouldn’t return. The physical infrastructure has lots of character and should create a real atmosphere, but it doesn’t. Even the candles failed to add anything positive ; the lighting generally was inadequate when it came to reading the menus. The food was regrettably only OK but issues like the seemingly overused cooking oil let it down. Flavour generally lacking. All that said, Pardon gave great service and even his face-mask couldn’t ‘mask’ his smile !

Sorry to read about your lukewarm experience this time. The physical infrastructure has not changed in 30 years and we like to create an atmosphere with candlelight rather than bright lights at night but I can ask management to turn the lights up for people to read the menus easier. I assure you we are one of few establishments that regularly check and change our cooking oil but I would like to know which dishes you had so I can investigate further. Please write to shaunb@marinerswharf.co.za as next time we would like you to leave completely satisfied.
