We went on a public holiday in beautiful autumn weather, so crowds everywhere, but one speaks as one finds. We found ourselves an outdoor table (under cover), somewhat bigger than we needed and set out to enjoy the view while we waited to order, which worked very much in favour of the seemingly understaffed restaurant. Eventually, order was placed and food duly arrived - my wife had a very average fish and chips and my Ceasar salad with chicken appeared as if it had literally been thrown together, croutons the size of a quarter slice of toast, and any crispiness which may have been in the lettuce totally removed by a deluge of anchovy sauce. We found a cushion from the next table to soften our seats, necessary due to the long wait, which was not repeated as we passed up dessert and coffee - we wanted to be home before dark.

Dunes is in a lovely location on the beach, the staff are warm and welcoming and breakfast was really tasty. We were quite a large group, so tried most of the breakfast menu between us and everyone enjoyed their meal. If you have young kids, the children's play area looks amazing and dogs were also allowed. I would definitely go back for lunch and maybe a sunset dinner.

We called into Dunes for a late lunch and had the most amazing tender steak meal that I can remember. It was served with roasted vegetables with mushrooms and was extremely well flavoured and delicious. The view from the restaurant is beautiful although it was incredibly windy when we were there and we had to take shelter from the wind by tucking ourselves into the side of the bar. Would definitely recommend for an informal but very tasty meal.

We went on Wednesday and the food was good but we were waiting for 20 minutes before getting the menu, due to all the tables being occupied! Also the meals took along time. We went back on Thursday earlier and were on the top floor, seems the waitress was serving all tables on the top floor, we sat at table which was confirmed by waitress but then people came in and said they had reserved the table, we moved to another table then it seems local people were served quicker than us. The first course took ages waitress said ribs were taking ages, ribs came out and were great, but my prawns were completely cold, main course took over 1 hour to come chicken burger was completely different from previous day very small amount of chicken, I ordered mussels and all the top mussels were completely cold. Waitress asked why I did not tip her, I told her the two courses I had were cold, I did not eat half of the mussels. Seems the waitress was having to serve a lot of tables, but seems to be focusing on local people.

Fabulous location and beautiful views. Sadly, the food has taken a dive at Dunes. Prices are not cheap and it should be like shooting fish in a barrel to make this place work, given its location. But more is expected when hard earned Covid cash is being spent on a night out. Unimaginative, poorly presented and below par is how I would describe the food. Such a terrible shame as this could and should be a shining light in the Hout Bay restaurant scene.

The restaurant is right at the beach and perfect for a sundowner. We came here for dinner right after sunset and sit outside, even it was windy. But in a wind-protected area it was all fine. Service was very slow and didn't feel very motivated. Table was only cleaned after asking twice (first time was accidentally forgotten, no offence taken). Everything took a very long time and other tables that ordered (the same food) after us, were served before us. Food was good but nothing special, but we enjoyed our night out. I thought it was little odd that on our bill several notes were made about the "tipping". As mentioned above we were not entirely satisfied especially with the waiter. When I signed for 7-8% tip, he nearly forced me to make it 10%. But sorry, I greatly give 15% if I am satisfied, but there need to be a difference between bad and great service. That left us with a negative connotation in the end, which was not necessary.

second time for me here, I remember that food was quite good a year ago. this time a was very disappointed, I ordered mussels which smelled like they were not very fresh and also looked like it. my lady normally loves mussels but was immediately repelled by the smell. after five mussels I returned the plate, a replacement was immediately offered, so I ordered fish'n chips; fish was quite ok, but chips were of the kind you find when fried too long in a temperature too low, soaking of fat. my company was happy with the food, so they may have deserved another chance.

Popped in for lunch with friends on a Wednesday lunchtime. What a location! On the beach, the only thing between you and the sea is the road and sand, and I couldn’t see the road. We sat outside on the benches. Comfortable, great view. Staff were busy but competent and nice. Thee is a very good choice of seating, inside and outside. The menu has a very good range of dishes, perfectly suited to the location. The food was great, pulled pork burger, beef Thai salad, chicken Caesar and a chicken burger. All washed down with great beer and wine. Pudding was lovely as well. I highly recommend this place.

Dunes is a very nice beach style restaurant, offering the classic menu items in a buzzing environment. Great for a long lunch with a glass of wine in the shade, while the kids can play in the playground. Service is mixed as in many cases but you have time. Relax and sip it.

I love this spot for a chilled out lunch or dinner in Hour Bay. Expect fish and chips, decent calamari, pizzas, sushi - classic Cape Town fare, all done to a decent standard and at a fair price. It overlooks the beach and is good for watching the sun set over the mountain. It is a windy spot, which is worth bearing in mind when choosing your table - I've seen people's glasses get blown over when sitting outside, but there's a terrace spot that's usually closed off in canvas, and is a great spot when the wind is blowing. Bring a jumper! Service is friendly but don't expect it to be immediate.

Dunes has so much potential and has done so for years. Unfortunately the service is atrocious. From the mature d who just stands there and tells you to basically fend for yourself, to the waiters who ignore you or tell you “it’s shift change” so they will send someone (which they never do). We had three different waiters during our meal attempt. We had to get our own utensils and sauces eventually and the potato Rostis on the one dish were so old and over cooked we couldn’t cut through them. The playground is lovely but in need of some tlc. Very sad as this place is such a draw to the community and tourists it just needs better management.

In South Africa is seems nobody is in a rush anywhere. The first place we went took so long I gave them a poor review. However I have since discovered everywhere takes forever to serve your food. We got fabulous fish and chips, excellent seafood, delicious appetizers and some great local beer. The atmosphere here was perfect for a vacation. We sat by the beach, surrounded by family and friends, watching a beautiful sunset while the children played in the sand and on the playground as we had starters and drank cocktails.

A honest review: The waiting staff was short on hands that day. Several tables had food delay and thats true cause the manager was in the kitchen the whole time until a complaint was made. 3 other that already ordered before we came was still waiting for food. " After 25 mins of waiting for our food we asked for the bill so that we can leave" the waiter said let me check and she came back with a steak. After a few bites I tasted my partners meal as she was really hunger and it my shock it was pork! " I asked for the manager and he said to me the following you already ate most of it we do not serve that sort of pork cut and he has several years of hospitality experience. Another dish was offered with a cocky approach that we merely only wanted a free meal. I could feel like we were being scrubbed off for wanting a freebie. For the location they could do a better job,

With its position on the beach at beautiful Hout Bay, this is the place for either lunch or dinner. The food is really good, portions are generous and it is always busy - a good sign. It is an informal restaurant - shake the sand off your feet, relax, and enjoy a delicious meal! In the evenings, the sunset is often spectacular.

I have been going to the Dunes for years for it's good food and fantastic views. Sadly this year was a great disappointment. Firstly, only 3 out of 4 drinks ordered arrived together. We had to chase about the fourth. Then there was an incorrect main course served. It was noisy that evening so I can understand if an order was misheard. However, when this was brought to the attention of a member of staff' there was no apology and no effort to bring the correct order before fellow diners finished their meal. When the food did arrive, the calamari was hard and only warm and did not taste that good. Service was slow all evening except when we asked for the bill. When I gave feedback to the manager about the incorrect order he didn't seem that bothered, thanking me perfunctorly for my comment but offering no genuine apology. It was disappointing evening.
