Muriel's Munchies is a simple establishment in the harbour offering great food for a great price. The atmosphere is quaint as per harbour surroundings. Sitting upstairs when windy is an experience but not always comfortable.
Loved it!

This extremely casual place serves fantastically fresh fish & chips that you eat on the upstairs deck with a close-up view of the fishing boats. You order and pay for your food downstairs and it is served to you at your table. Its cheap (the food) and cheerful (the staff), and the ice cream afterwards is amazingly good.

If you are on the sightseeing bus, walk round the corner from Mariners Wharf to see a shack named Muriels Munchies. We had lightly battered hake and chips for 80 rand (£4) and sat outside in the sunshine. A cup of tea was an extra 20 rand. Plastic knives and forks provided and sauces. Great value for money and really fresh hake. Saw the potatoes being delivered in sacks so fresh chips too. What a bargain.

Many people end up at Muriel’s because they don’t want the very long wait at Mariner’s Wharf. That’s exactly what we did today. We ordered a portion of fish and chips, and a portion of the tiger prawns and chips - between my daughter and I. The fish was good, albeit cold. But the prawns were terrible. Firstly, they cannot possibly be called tiger prawns. The prince prawns at Ocean Basket - the smallest size they sell - are much larger than these. And then the prawns themselves: tasteless, mealy, disintegrates as soon as you open them. The worst prawns I’ve had in a long time.
Maybe they should stick to fish, and leave the prawns to the experts, and those who know how to choose, and prepare them.

We took the red bus trip and stopped off at Hout bay for a fish and chip lunch. Muriel’s offered fish with a crispy thin batter and thin cut slap chips. The staff were friendly and helpful. Pick a table on top of the container to see the view over the bay

We went for the free fish and chips as part of our City Pass. Didn’t realise there was an upstairs so had to move a couple of times cos people were smoking. Sadly as we were waiting for our meal, a rat walked past the stairs and towards the kitchen. Fish was ok albeit mine had 4 large bones in it. My wife thought the chips were undercooked. We had been to Hout Bay yesterday. Probably wished we had stayed on the hoho bus today

So sorry that you saw a rat! But hey - guess what? It's a harbour and there are rats everywhere OUTSIDE. 4 Bones? Sir, we sell actual fish fillets from a fish (not processed fish fillets!). In all honesty, if you were not very happy - with rat or chips or 4 bones, why not just come to us and say something? Anyway, I sincerely hope the rest of your holiday improves.

Whenever we come to Cape Town we make the trip for the best fish & chips with upstairs view of a beautiful working wharf. Muriel's is just around the corner and a secret of the Mariner's wharf totally worth sharing.
We had the platter for two Wow! What a delectable selection of the freshest seafood with perfect crispy chips. Not just friendly, fast service but fascinating conversation with owner Ken. We will definitely be back for more.

As visitors of Hout Bay, we asked a local for a quality seafood recommendation. We found ourselves outside this small container in the beautiful harbour. What a gem! Quick, affordable, hot and delicious! It's one of those places you will likely chat with the owner and only realize who they were afterwards. It's a great place to hang out. In our opinion, one of the best calamari dishes we've had. Highly recommend!

This establishment is the epitome of what it means to be South African and if you ever want to see what “service with a smile looks like” this is the spot for you. The owners and staff of the place really capture the true spirit of Ubuntu in their service and hospitality. This is evident through the busyness of this establishment, by which its patrons are both tourists and locals. The staff is extremely friendly and the food is excellent, fresh and is received nice and hot. I would highly recommend this spot to anybody passing through Hout Bay. 👍

Ignore the mass of people at the main restaurant and head for Muriel's. We had the calamari in a bun as a snack then came back for Hake and chips. Everything was fresh hot and service fast even on a Sunday lunchtime. Sit upstairs ( they will bring your order) and soak up the views.

Go around the corner from the main popular tourist fish and chip shop to find Muriel’s little blue “cabin” They have burgers and toasted sandwiches for those who don’t like fish, but the hake and chips is a winner. Super fresh flaky fish right off the fishing boats! We didn’t try the prawns or calamari but they looked good too. Give the tartare sauce a skip - it is weirdly sweet and not savoury as tartare sauce should be. The milkshakes seem popular too and look good. It’s less crowded than the main fish and chip shop with more options on the menu. Worth a try
