About
Along with formal training in Europe, Chef Nicolene Barrow worked at the world-famous Le Gavroche Restaurant in London before setting-up Orangerie at Le Lude. Here classical French cuisine is presented with a contemporary twist; the purist, disciplined approach of the European masters combined with a hint of individual, modern creativity where what is on the plate is presented looking as good as it tastes. A seasonal menu offers the finest, freshest ingredients picked from the herb garden, found in the forests, meadows, mountains and seas of the Cape, resulting in a selection of dishes offered in an environment conducive to making permanent Franschhoek memories. Having dined here on numerous occasions for lunch and dinner our recent experience was disappointing. To be served bubbles which were flat and presumably leftovers from the tasting room was inexcusable. The food offered, at best, was very average, nothing like we have experienced in...past years. The chef has either changed or certainty not imparted her flair on to the kitchen team that night. The service offered was fine, just the food let the experience down. Realise times are difficult at present but, for a first class establishment to retain their crown needs to have a serious rethink.More

A culinary experience. The food was again extremely tasty and well presented. The setting is beautiful and coupled with a balanced menu, very helpful staff led by a 5 star chef….well done.

We had lunch at l'Orangerie and took the mushroom torte and the pear salad. Both were excellent. This was recommended to us being one of the best restaurants of Franschoek

Fabulous once again! Great service, exquisite food that remains consistently good! Can’t wait to return! The lemon Madeline’s with the bill are a great way to end a superb meal

This is price-quality top class. We sat inside due to cold weather outside. The service is very friendly and attentive. The food is a pleasure. What you should definitely eat is the Soufflé Gruyère, delicious. Wine and food were very good. We enjoyed it.

My husband and I have had lunch at the Orangerie once a week for the past seven weeks and will be visiting again once a week for the rest of our holiday. The food is really superb, especially the gruyere soufflé ,which I’ve ordered on...every visit. The setting is also sublime and while lunch outside is a special treat, the inside of the restaurant is also lovely. On every visit we have found the staff to be extremely welcoming, friendly and highly professional. The wine list is also extensive and very competitively priced. This is one of the very best restaurants in Franscchoek and should be on everyone’s must visit list.More

This was our only bad experience on a wonderful trip to South Africa for my 50th birthday……unfortunately it was on my actual birthday. Our tasting started fine and we asked our waiter if it was possible to sit outside after our tasting. The weather was...pretty awful but we explained my birthday and that friends had bought this as a present and we wanted to order a bottle to enjoy with a cheese platter for lunch. We asked if it was possible (or not) under an umbrella and he said he would organise a table. He didn’t come near us again and appeared to be reassigned to the restaurant. We were then just simply ignored.. we finished our tasting, assuming someone would come over to say yes or no to outside. We tried to make eye contact with anyone and eventually a waitress came over. We explained again what we had asked for thinking she would come straight back and say yes or no to outside (we would have just enjoyed our wine and platter inside if it wasn’t posible) but then watched her serve in the restaurant as we just sat there. By now I was really upset so we decided to leave. My birthday afternoon being completely ruined. To be fair, when we went to pay I said what a horrible experience we had and they didn’t charge us for the tasting. While appreciated, paying wasn’t the issue, we had expected to have had a lovely afternoon. Delaire, French Connection, La Cotte, La Petite Ferme were all fabulous and made my birthday trip very special. I’m sure many people have a wonderful experience at Le Lude but unfortunately we had the opposite.More

We booked High Tea for a group of 10 people. After several emails and telephone requests to be seated outside, we arrive to find our table set inside. Approaching management to move us outside, was met with arrogance and downright rudeness. We were eventually moved...outside, but it definitely tainted the group's experience of Orangerie by then. We were also rushed by management to be finished by 11:30. We adhere to the timetable only to find that no other tables were occupied outside by the time we left (11:45) and only a few tables occupied inside the restaurant. Will not book High Tea again.More

We loved everything about our meal - it’s very very good. The restaurant is in a fantastic setting overlooking the vines and mountains. Equally the Orangerie itself is an incredible room. We ordered the salmon and trio of mushroom tortellini for our starters and both...dishes were incredible. For our mains it was Karoo T-Bone chops and the mussels - again both dishes were very good. They serve wholesome portions and so we couldn’t manage a dessert. The service was fabulous - very attentive but very friendly and we had a good laugh with the team. We enjoyed a glass of the Le Lude Brut with our starters and the glasses of Mont Rochelle Chardonnay and La Motte Syrah with our mains. The bill came to R1200 including service. A lovely evening and pleasant walk back to our hotel through the vineyard whilst enjoying great views of the stars.More

This remains our favorite restaurant in Franschhoek. The setting, the amazing staff, attention to detail, and last but not least the fantastic food draws us back every time. Nicolene, already a very experienced chef, is now superlative, providing dish after incredible dish. Brillat-Savarin was perfectly...correct - a new dish brings more joy than a new star. Thank you L'Orangerie for a galaxy of stars!More
