This is not our first visit to Le Bon Vivant. Our previous meal there was a couple of years ago - and it is testimony to the outstanding food/chef and warm, but professional staff, that it remains our favourite and one of the best in...Franschhoek. The complementary quail broth/crispy 'thing' was a superb palate teaser . None of this detracted from the delicious mains and dessert - lamb and game were both superb. We look forward to our next visit to Franschhoek.More

Le Bon Vivant and Pierre are always the place to go for us during the Franschhoek Literary Festival. The food is outstanding both in quality and presentation. I thoroughly enjoyed the 4 course food & wine pairing.

We have been dining here for many years and it never disappoints. Paul the owner chef always produces creative good food. The kitchens food presentations are picture worthy. Oh, and so good. Missed our favorite server Sylvia this trip but look forward to seeing her...on our next visit in September. Just wish they were closer to Atlanta.More

A delicious welcome to South Africa. Efficient, friendly service and great food - probably the best meal we had during our three-week trip.

Let me start with the welcome: we were there two days ago and it was fully booked so we made a reservation for today. When we got there, there was no reservation. We did however convince them and got a table. We ordered water and...Gin. There were 6 different ones on the menu we found out a minute later, however when we ordered no question asked which one we want. Just received the most expensive one. Why not ask? The greeting from the kitchen was nice. All in all, food presentation and taste is a 5+, however all the rest did not keep up! It is the little things that count. The candle that was not lit, the wine cooler placed on the floor, we asked for extra plates, received only one. Talking about wine: we got a red wine that was minimum 28, if not 30 degrees Celsius. I m sorry, but in a restaurant like this I expect the wine be served with the right temperature. That in my eyes is a no go. Appetizer we had was scalop and crab claws. There was nothing mentioned that crab is not available. When we got it we asked and were told it is replaced by crab meet. Take a really close look at the picture. Do you find any? I did not! It was a restaurant chosen for me being 60 now. Food was good, no doubt. Desert was splendid, which was a plus again. Overall experience however does not match and leaves a certain taste…More

The standard of cooking at Le Bon Vivant was exceptionally good. We enjoyed the prawns and scallop and crab starters but thought the crayfish and Osso bucco main was the real highlight. The desserts were fantastic. A really nice setting in an open courtyard created...a nice atmosphere. The choice of wines by the glass was good and reasonably priced. Unfortunately there were just too few staff to manage the busy restaurant. We had booked an early table at 6.45 and the initial service was friendly and efficient. However by 8 o’clock the restaurant was full and the staff couldn’t cope. We waited 45 minutes between starters and mains and the same again between mains and desserts. The table next to us waited 1 hour 20 minutes for starters to arrive. It’s a shame as the food, wine and atmosphere were excellent, but a few more staff were required to deliver the service level expected.More

We have been visiting this restaurant since it's inception. Always great food, extensive wine list. An amazing and talented Chef/Owner with a great team of back up staff/waitresses. Cannot quite reconcile some earlier comments with our own experiences. We visit throughout the year when in...SA. This time the fairly new Squid and Trout starter was an absolute winner. The beef and sweetbreads perfectly prepared and served. Not forgetting the white chocolate ands strawberry soufflé It was a very busy evening but no problem with timing. One has to appreciate every dish is put together by Pierre the Chef alone. Maybe the odd tourist is ignorant as to what goes into the amazing presentation of all the plates coming out of the kitchen. We eat at many many establishments within the Village and this one is always we recommend to friends to visit.More

A very different menu with, unsurprisingly, a Dutch flavour. Bittenballs were fabulous. Smoked trout to start was very understated, but the seared tuna was great. Enjoyable experience and great value

Really disappointed. Have previously visited but this time just did not do it for us. Flattered to deceive on every course, bread being our favourite course which says it all. Presentation ok but cooking has to reflect in this, with just no wow. Antelope medium...rare was well done. Lamb main tough. Big portions for us no quality. Staff pleasant but really not well trained or informed. Only found out about quail special when order taken at next table way after we had ordered. Far better in the village in my opinionMore

Lovely vibrant restaurant with a great atmosphere. Busy but the staff were well in control and everything flowed very well. Food was excellent and promptly served and all was very very tasty. Certainly worth a visit when in the area. Good value too.

Very small portions, tasteless and very slow service.. The vegetarian options in particular was minute with a tasteless clear broth . I am afraid this restaurant is trading on reputation and is pretentious and very poor value for money.

An amazing restaurant just off the main street in franschoek. Service was outstanding as was the food which is beautifully presented. Although its not cheap, it is value for money, and they have a good wine list. We felt very well looked after. We've recommended...it since to other people staying in the areaMore

Unfortunately our experience here last night was below its usual standards that we have previously had on many visits to Franschhoek and Le Bon Vivant. The chefs menu did not flow well together and the food that should have been warm was tepid at best....Explanations of both food and wine pairings either limited or not heard. Asked waitress what the sauce on the tuna dish was and she did not know! Did not even bother to go and find out. In what is classed as aerated dining establishment I would expect the serving staff to know the dishes off by heart. Appearance of staff shoddy. They use to be professional in appearance, not any more. I do not expect for dinner to be served by someone wearing cut off trousers and sandals. We will not be returning and unfortunately based on this experience would not recommend.More
