Yummy food at a good price

The Hussar Grill is an established steak house in Franschhoek with a cozy atmosphere and a bar. We were welcomed with lovely warm sweet potato chips and olives. We brought our own wine and we were not charged corkage. We chose the 2 course lunch meal for R195 I had the garlic snails, large snails in a lovely garlic butter. I then had the rump 200g medium rare with garlic potatoes. So yummy my hubby and son both had the tomato soup and prego roll. We were so full We had to get a takeaway box. Good value . Also try their main menu yummy things to choose from .

Slow on a Monday evening

We booked 'The Hussar Grill' on the recommendation of a friend who eats there regularly and we had a lovely corner table on the outside terrace. As it was a windy evening that culminated in heavy rain, we were pleased they had put the side shutters down. The restaurant had created a lovely terrace atmosphere with gas heaters, dim lighting and a generally relaxing ambiance. We ordered a rose wine which was fine but not the best we had drank, and my wife ordered the Avocado and Prawn salad followed by a Caesar salad. I went for the Chicken Livers followed by Kingklip in a thermidor sauce. It all started well with my chicken livers which were delicious and my wife's Avocado Salad that was very generous. The kitchen had obviously overstretched itself on a busy Monday evening and approximately 90 minutes after ordering the main course, with repeated apologies from our waiter, the main courses arrived. By this time we were almost past eating and my wife's Caesar salad was unusual with bacon, anchovies, a mix of lettuce leaves, boiled egg but no parmesan. My fish was tasty. With a generous tip, as the delay was with the kitchen rather than the waiter, the bill came out just over £42 so it would be churlish not to appreciate the value, but it could have been so much better if back stage ran like an oiled machine getting the food out in a timely manner. All in all, an enjoyable evening but would I give the Hussar Grill a second visit, probably not.

Best steak you can get in Franschhoek

We went out for a Saturday night dinner in Franschoek to Hussars, if you are going on a Thursday-Saturday evening you should definitely get a reservation in advance. The restaurant was completely full on the inside. We had Thembelani as our server and she was on top of everything. She had appetizer out in no time and wanted know when we wanted our mains, there was no rush it was all at our pace. The black mushroom was delicious and tender. For our main course we both ordered filets, one was with Bernaise the other cream butter sauce both were tender and nicely seared. The mixed vegetables were a good choice and were nicely done. One of the nicest meals we had in franschhoek.

Disappointed Experience

We reserved a table for two on the front terrace for 7.30 pm and duly arrived at 7.25. The terrace was nearly full and we were hastily escorted to a rear semi external patio area and placed at a table laid for four after being told our pre-booked table was now not available. We had four sets of cutlery, no napkins or condiments. We ordered wine which was served and ordered our meals, mains only, one fillet steak, medium and one beef and reef, sirloin medium rare and blue cheese sauce. The waiter kept topping up our glasses and apologised for the delay and after 45minutes a manager came, offered apologies and stated our meals were now coming, some 25minutes further another manager offered another apology for the ‘slight delay’. The waiter suddenly realised the lack of napkins and condiments, provided them and finally served the meal emptying the last drop of wine in to our glasses. I pointed out my sirloin was well done, not medium rare, he raced it back to the kitchen and continued to place the side orders out, mash potato and creamed spinach. Another steak was then presented, along with my prawns and all seemed well, it wasn’t. The sides were cold the steak was cold as was the plate it was on. Without trying to cause a scene l asked for the manager, he tried with excuses but quickly retracted, we salvaged what we could and left, the manager was too embarrassed to produce a bill. Not an experience to be repeated.

Nice meal with mixed service

When we arrived at the outside front terrace there was nobody to meet us. The Maitre D had to be shouted over from the shaded tree across the road where staff were gathered . We had pre-booked a table for four people and were given a tiny table that would be a pleasant dining for two people . We asked the Maitre D to put two tables together , she refused even thou other tables had been reserved in a similar fashion. So four of us dined at a tiny table , 4 x dinner plates , 4 x glasses of wine and water , a water bottle and two bottles of red , sorry this is not good enough. Fortunately the dining experience was saved by our servers Blessing and Lee Roy who could see our predicament and helped in any way they could by promptly clearing the table.

Great steaks

Housed in the Marriott Protea Hotel in the centre of town the restaurant is very attractive It has both inside and outside seating. We are in the library which was lovely. Our steak was amazing and we really enjoyed the meal. Only reason I did not give 5 stars is that the service was rather laboured and they appeared either a bit understaffed or not very efficient Prices a little less than the Franschhoek norm.

Best value steakhouse ever

We had booked this restaurant for our first night in Franschhoek after a few nights of seafood in Cape Town. It’s on the main road through the town within a hotel (though you can still see it from the street if you are walking). We had a warm welcome from our server who sat us inside (they also have an outdoor covered area). It had a steakhouse decor and the sharp knives on the table hinted of what was to come. We ordered a couple of cocktails and a glass of wine each for our meal and studied the longish menu. There are other options but the steaks stand out. On the recommendation of our server I ordered the rib eye with bone marrow and my wife the smaller fillet. There are a selection of sides available which are in with the price of the steak. The steaks were great, cooked as we like them and were very succulent. The bone marrow was a good addition. By deciding not to have a starter we had room for a dessert - death by Chocolate for my wife and the SA version of a sticky toffee pudding for me. Both were great and a sensible size. Service throughout was excellent. Certainly would recommend if you are in town. 54GBP with tip all in - superb value

Excellent food and sevice after a couple of blips.

We had been to the Hussar grill last week in Hermanus and thoroughly enjoyed the date night special so booked it again for the restaurant in Franschoek. We were shown to our table, given ordinary menus, no mention of the date night special at all. Also the table was extremely shaky every time we touched it. Joseph, our waiter for the evening, asked if we wanted drinks and quickly resolved the rocky table issue when we pointed it out to him. He also immediately brought us the date night menus but only after my husband asked for them. The rest of the evening was very good. Joseph very attentive and professional, the food was delicious and freshly prepared. My husband asked for his steak rare and it was perfect. The roasted vegetables still firm, not overcooked or mushy. The restaurant was very busy but the staff were all working well together to provide great food and wine.

Great food l, great service

We had a wonderful experience at Hussar Grill. Our waiter Blessing was especially helpful, advising us on the top picks on the menu and the best wine to accompany our meal. Amazing steak and ribs!

In a place like Franschhoek with all its fancy restaurants it would be very easy to overlook a chain steakhouse like the Hussar Grill. If you did that you would be making one of the biggest mistakes of your life. The food is absolutely phenomenal and the service is top-notch. I won’t eat in steakhouses back in the UK because none of them compare to the Hussar Grill. Also they don’t charge corkage. They are more than happy for you to take your own wine that you purchased on one of your many Franschhoek wine tastings.

Outstanding Experience

We enjoyed a wonderful experience. Our waiter Margo was very attentive. Our fillet steaks were perfectly cooked, as were the sides of green beans and garlic baby potatoes. Sharing the sides would have been enough! Cocktails, dinner, wine, Malva pudding for dessert… and then out Margo comes with a warm chocolate digestif! A perfect dinner! You will not be disappointed!!

Food well below standard

Having had good meals at other branches of the Hussar Grill, we were very disappointed at the lunch at this branch. My chicken burger arrived very dry and uninspiring, with only a token splatter of salad dressing on the two small bits of lettuce leaves. My wife ordered a rump, well done, with roast vegetables. However it came almost rare and had to be sent back to be cooked further. It then came back well done but with no basting sauce, and tough to cut, while the roast vegetables were drowning in oil. We often have these two items at other Hussar Grill branches where the steak is tender and the burger more appealing. Also the service here started off well, but deteriorated once we complained about the food. Even though it was Bastille Day the venue was not busy and there was no excuse for such disappointing food.

A lovely place for a nice meal. Menu extensive even if you don't eat meat.. Great cocktails and great waitress Afica showed us a great wine choice which we would not have considered. Food portions large, great complimentary drink after the meal. Great experience,. Well recommended.

Disappointing

Mixed feelings as we visited 2 consecutive night, the first night my wife was unwell and had to leave, I had a ribeye steak which was tasty and the staff were attentive and friendly, because of this we booked again. Sadly it was the opposite experience, service was very slow, no one came to say sorry for the wait, when the meal arrived 2 rump steak 1 medium and 1 medium rare. Firstly we we’re given them the wrong way round but on cutting into the medium rare it was raw, but in the same measure both were very tough , not what you’d expect from a good steak restaurant. We sent the steak back and did receive the same one back , while better cooked it didn’t alter the texture. A manager did come and apologise and offered an explanation that there had been struggling with suppliers, I would have thought it was better to remove a bad product than risk complaints. We we’re offered a sweet to compensate which was delicious but overall it was a very disappointing visit second time round.

Amazing, friendly, delicious and very reasonable

Joseph was amazing, the food was amazing - this whole place was incredible from start to finish. My husband had chateaubriand and I had a 200g fillet steak, both ordered extra sides, and it was so worth it. Joseph recommended two red wines to accompany my mains; both wonderful and such a lovely, personal touch. We’ll be coming back and recommending this to every person who asks for a suggestion. Thank you.
