We had dinner here on our last visit to the Drakensberg area ten years ago and liked the restaurant. Now we returned and they only had a buffet that was quite mediocre. Service was good, but the price paid for the buffet (235 Rand a head) didn't match the quality. And the choice of draught beers in the bar (cat piss light) was disappointing as well.

A cosy restaurant with a fireplace for the cold winter's evenings, as well as an outside deck area for lovely summer days. There is a good selection of food for breakfast and lunch at reasonable prices, although we felt their wine was rather expensive. Very friendly service from waitrons. We were pestered a little with flies outside on the deck and would recommend the restaurant considers installing insect repellent devices.

They serve good food in their Friar Tuck restaurant. In the weekend it can be very busy. Try the trout, it was very nice. Unfortunately we were too late for the home made apple pie, it was sold out. Service is good.

Upon arrival, the kitchen staff were very loudly watching a download on a cellphone. That should've been our cue to turn around and go elsewhere
Wanting a cocktail we were informed that only Margaritas are available as they don't have any stock to make the other seven listed on the menu.
On the starter side, there was no Prawn tempura available so we opted for oven baked mussels. It was served in a jellylike white sauce with lumps in, probably made with cornstarch. Rather disgusting. The wine list is unimpressive with only unknown wines available at exuberant prices. One would come to the conclusion that they are selling cheap unknown wines very expensively. We ordered a chicken snitzel which on the menu said to be topped with bacon and mozarella. It came to the table plain and dry, no topping. The stuffed chicken fillet was dry and tasteless, the half chicken was horrific. It was clearly pre cooked and left in the freezer for months judging by the freezer burn on it. The Alfredo pasta was left under the light to keep it warm way too long, the pasta was dry and the plate was scalding hot and that for an eight year old.... there was no malva Pudding. The general manager happened to pass by and we complained to him, his excuse was that Bidvest only delivers on a Tuesday that is why there is no stock. Then why be open on a Monday and a Tuesday? The service was good however and the waitress actually thanked us for complaining about the stock situation! Seems to be an existing problem. I would not recommend this restaurant as it doesn't have any atmosphere or a view. There are many nicer places in the area

Wonderful atmosphere makes you feel welcome. Limited menu, but the food presented was top class. Together with the good service made it an excellent date night.

A group of us went to Monks Cowl for lunch, we were served by the Manager for the most part, not sure why as there were plenty staff around... Food was very reasonable in price, not amazing but okay. Our group was not allowed to sit together even though there were plenty of empty tables we were not allowed to join them???

if you are looking for something else to do in the berg away from where you are staying here is a place offering a pub, pool,restaurant,golf and putt putt,the service is good but the beef curry I ordered came full of bones, when I complained I was advised it was a beef curry, told them I was from Durban and the only curry you get with bones is fish, mutton or lamb, made them take it away

This country club is now under new ownership and has drasticaly been improved.
Not only is it a great cullinary experiance but you could very well book accommodation with them, which has been upgraded.

Always a good meal. Specials on several days of the week. Food is always hot. Bar attached to restaurant. Staff most obliging. Easy access to the numerous accommodation venues in the area.
Also has accommodation.

We ate at Monks Cowl Country Club in April 2012.
Service is South Africa can be patchy, but we have rarely if ever encountered such attitude from the staff.
Decor and food reminded me of north whales c. 1975. Fairly devoid of style, and astonishingly miserable to the taste.
I had steak. Clearly frozen-defrosted-refrozen-defrosted. Disgusting.
My wife had line fish of the day....angel fish. Also appeared to be c. 1975 in origin. Quite inedible.
Kids froze'n'fried hake and chips was ok.
We sent our meals back (first time i ever recall doing this) and asked for the bill minus the two adult mains. No comment or question....and no hint of an apology for spoiling our night.
Makes me wonder how often people complain here.
On a more positive note, the bar looked pleasant enough and was quite frequented.
Sadly no chance whatsoever of going back though.
Avoid!
