Lokal is a gem in an otherwise perceived rough and tumble location. It is beautifully appointed and sophisticated. We know the owners through a mutual friend and although we’ve only been twice in four years, and there is no bias in my review, outside of...the restaurant they are interesting and great people. Inside the restaurant they are even better! Friendly, attentive, helpful. Lainey’s mom helps with service and Stanleys’ wine recommendation was spot on. I’m not a foodie but as for the food. . . a small bespoke menu allows for only the freshest ingredients, and who really needs 40 options to choose from? There were two starters and three perfect main courses (red meat/fish/vegan) two deserts. We tried all of it except the veg main. The food had solid flavours, a real taste sensation and well presented! I have no word for describing how I enjoyed the trout. We would have been back the next day to “swap” the menu to have the other dishes but our timing was off and they were not closed. But we will be back!!! A bonus is to take a short walk in their own forest between meals to soak in nature and make space for a more enjoyable next serving. Make a booking, take the drive - its well worth it!More

Be prepared to spend a relaxed afternoon enjoying mouthwatering dishes at this most incredible eatery. New chef, changes to the menu, now open more frequently (every Friday - Monday) ..same GREAT food. We enjoyed Mini Turkish Skewers (Beef / Chicken / Chickpea ...all excellent), Pyranees...Lamb Neck with White Wine and Paprika sauce served on heerenboon mash (highly recommended). We considered skipping dessert but fortunately did not - we ordered 1 of each and shared. Delicious. So pleased that we can now go there for lunch more often!More

Burger day at Lokal is a treat. With three options to choose from, no one had food envy. For a vegetarian option the burger was packed with flavour, moist and held together perfectly. The vegan mayonaise is something to write home about. Served with a...traditional spicy German potato salad (not potato and mayo), I enjoyed every bite. The hostess is the perfect front of house person. The atmosphere is refined relaxed. It feels like joining friends for lunch. I would highly recommend Lokal in Baardskeerdersbos. Price, you get what you pay for, flavourful quality food that satisfies body and soul.More

Just wonderful, the location, food, ambiance is so special. Stanley, Lainey and Suzy have created an amazing experience that is difficult to describe. Red wine, coke and passion fruit may be my new favourite drink! Every course was unique but the sardines and pork especially...good. I just wish I lived closer!More

We have been at Lokal a couple of times and it was each time a divine and out of the norm experience . The menu always broadens the horizon on a culinary level, the surrounding garden is a little paradise and the service is top!

Expect a long lunch, upwards of 3 hours. Lainy is very attentive and takes time to explain every course. Great if there is a group of you. 5/6 courses.

Wow! We were blown away by lunch at this pop-up restaurant on Easter Monday. The theme was “Cultural Easter Eats”, featuring dishes eaten around the world during Easter. Every dish was unique and something that you do not easily find on restaurant menus. It is...difficult to select a favourite, as every dish was so tasteful and interesting and beautifully presented, with utmost attention to detail. Two standouts: Fanesca (salt fish, peanut and milk soup) and Capirotada (spiced hot cross bun bread and butter pudding with queso fresco and roast white chocolate). The whole experience was a treat, with lovely local wines, friendly hosts and chefs. Make sure you have enough time on your hands - this is a lunch to be savoured, not hurried.More

LOKAL came highly recommended and we were thrilled to be invited to lunch by local friends. We were, however, struck from the start by the rather sparse welcome from the hosts (there was none) and the overall lack of service/interest during the meal. It did...seem though that certain tables of friends/regulars were receiving plenty of attention. The venue is lovely and interesting. As was the food. BUT the frugal service was matched with really frugal portions... Traveling a fair distance to get there, we were quite peckish and actually left still a bit hungry ( we are not big eaters!). At the price, it was definitely a let down, compared to similar regional eateries. Good concept, but needs focus.More

Keep an eye out for the pop up restaurants here, they only occur once a month! Chef Suzi Holtzhausen creates innovative and delicious food served in a friendly atmosphere. All ingredients are sourced locally, the vegetables come from the organic garden that surrounds the restaurant.

Baardskeerdersbos, or B'bos as it is known, is a quaint secluded hamlet in the Overberg. A half hours drive from Stanford along a gravel road, past vast farms and wine estates takes one to the attractively designed restaurant. A warm welcome and stroll through the...vegetable garden before sitting down for a great tasting experience. The theme for the weeks pop up was new takes on old classics and the chefs interpretation of 'fish and chips' 'cheese and tomato' or 'pork and beans' was innovative exciting and utterly delicious. Using fresh ingredients, sourced from their vast garden and local producers enhanced the wholesome flavours. Excellent local wines, a perfect setting, and a great meal made for a perfect Valentine's Day in the delightful Overberg.More

If their is one thing you have to do in the area, then it will be a visit to this pop-up restaurant. It is only open for three days each month and you have to book to reserve your seat. The food is well prepared...and this is more than a lunch, but an experience. You have to give yourself some time for lunch, because each sitting can take up to 4 hours, but its worth it.More
