About
The Palace Saloon is truly a Soo establishment, opening for the first time over a century ago. The restaurant has seen some changes over the decades, switching hands and even looks, but what has always remained the same is the Palace Saloon’s amazing food, drinks and its commitment to the local community. Although the Palace Saloon has seen several changes and renovations throughout the last century, some things have never changed. The beautiful mahogany Brunswick bar is still in use, and the caring friendly staff, the delicious Mexican and American food, and the family-oriented business is the same as it has always been.

We stumbled on this place after a bad experience at another Mexican restaurant. We were promptly seated. The menu is limited but the server assisted me in selecting a vegetarian meal. My husband and I both had different types of fajita salads. The servings were large and the meal was outstanding!! I enjoyed a delicious fresh brewed iced tea as well. We will definitely return when in the area!

On a recent visit to the Soo, we debated hard on trying the Palace. It's been around for years, and reviews for this place are all over the board, depending on what review site you favor. Reminding ourselves that we should always take reviews with a grain of salt, and keeping in mind anyone can have a bad day, we gave them a try. Man, are we glad we did! First, the service -- I wish I remembered the name of the young man who served us, because he was super funny, friendly, efficient, and he checked on us without being intrusive at all. He more than earned his good tip. We started with salsa and some chili con queso (we opted for the corn tortilla chips, instead of the flour chips; you won't regret doing the same). The queso was a touch chunky and very flavorful, and frankly, good on everything. The salsa was just spicy enough for a hint of heat with no lasting burn. For our entrees, the hubs ordered steak and chicken fajitas, requesting the onions and peppers a little well done. Everything was cooked as requested, and sizzling as loudly as fajitas should be when they arrived table side. He had no complaints, and thought they were better than most he'd had recently. I opted for the queso chimichanga, and was again pleasantly surprised. It's not gargantuan, like so many chimis and burritos are these days (ideal, because I can rarely finish half), but it was still plenty large enough for most appetites. The ground beef filling was seasoned well but not spicy, and it went perfectly with the black beans I ordered for my side. A bedding of fresh, crisp lettuce helped cut through the richness, as did our leftover salsa, which I added. Because it was my birthday, we splurged on the fried ice cream, and fought over the last bite, :) (As it happened, our dessert was comped when the server realized it was my birthday. I don't know if that's common practice or not, but it was a lovely gesture and surprise.) The atmosphere in the Palace is cozy, particularly the high booths that give the impression of privacy. We'll likely avoid it in the summer, simply because it's hard to get a meal ANYWHERE downtown during the height of tourist season. But we'll most definitely be back in the fall and winter.

Parking limited. Margaritas were tasty $8 medium size with upgrade tequila. We saw they had their taco plate that comes with 2 tacos, and had 2 choices: Maple bacon chicken, and Bourbon steak bits with mushrooms. Both are same price $15. I wanted a plate with one of each , but they refused. Bad management when they are same price?!! So had to order 2 plates and then switch with my wife one each to get our combo we wanted. Both are delicious even if overpriced.

I regularly spend time in the Soo. The town is most assuredly a tourist trap! I am on a two-week visit to the Soo! Today I decided to go to the Palace for dinner, checked out the menu on their website prior to my visit and the nachos seemed good and was the Thursday special at $11.00. The picture looked good so I ordered that when I arrived. The wait staff was excellent and prompt. The nachos were at very best lousy with there being maybe 14 chips, a very light spattering of cheese and scarce diced onion, and nothing else, a one once cup of sour cream and also salsa. The salsa was very good. This was a huge disappointment to me and will not return as this indicates to me that they do not deserve my future patronage. I have been to the Palace is the past and it was satisfactory previously. This should have been a great food choice with relatively low effort on the part of the kitchen staff.

We have come here before, and the food was much better. The service was slow, the waiter grumpy and the food was small portions and not very good. No seasoning, had to ask for more salsa for a taco salad, and then it didn't fix the bland taste. It was expensive for something I could have gotten at a fast food restaurant and get a far better meal.

So disappointed. Really high prices and the food is just meh. $7 for standard chips and salsa. NOTHING is seasoned. We all were salting evvvvvvverything, even the chips. $100 bill for a family of 5 w/3 kids and no alcohol 😳 This was a one and done for us!! Go visit Lockview for some fresh fish or Karl’s Cuisine for some in house craft brews! Both are far superior.

The person at the hotel recommended this place so we went. We asked for a quiet table (the place is very noisy) and we were seated next to a party of 10 who were having a great time. The food was not good at all, the waiter was a bit goofy and I could not wait to get out of there. The fajita "steak" what there was of it, was tough and tasteless. And the wine list is limited to some cheap wine. However the Margarita was served in a lovely glass.

This beautiful restaurant is decorated well, however tables too close together. Margaritas tasted good, but question if there was any tequila in them. Informed waiter of the situation and he brought us a shot of tequila(which we got charged $4.00 for), however I question if IT was tequila, as it tasted like water to me. This was a busy evening and our waiter was bustling about. Our food was served BARELY warm. It could have been possibly been one of the best dinners we have had. We ordered the twin fajitas.

I guess we were just tired of fish dinners, and after our Famous Soo Locks boat ride, she wanted Mexican. From the outside, Palace looks vintage. Inside, more vintage, classic, dark and cool. On this Sunday, near the end of July, we were able to park nearby, for free. Late afternoon lunchtime. We ordered from hunger and the fajitas, chips with queso, lots of food. I took some pics which I will attempt to attach to this memo. Our booth was in the restaurant section, back near the patio seating, and our nice waitress was helpful. I was once again disappointed by the beer selection in a great beer state, Michigan. The microbrewery on the corner was closed, that's one of the reasons we decided to try the Palace. I got the house Sangria instead, and it was nice. Fruit and wine cocktail, just the one. The Palace is known for their selection of tequilas, but we didn't know that until we were on our way out the door. We thought the food was very good, and we took the leftovers all the way to Whitefish Point the next afternoon, lots of leftovers. We had a suite with a real kitchen there: the refrigerator came in handy for leftovers. So if you're in the mood for something other than fish or seafood while in Sault Ste Marie, Mich, definitely give the Palace a try. Review by Fritomann.

Still our destination for large, tart margaritas & hot, cheesy queso - get it with mixed chips. Offering a wide variety of classic & flavored margaritas in small to fish bowl size, simple mexican dishes (taco, burrito, fajitas) & our go to - the hot queso. The street tacos are great too -

We were very hungry while visiting the Soo Locks. Our first choice was Karl’s, but it was closed. The Palace was the runner up choice. We were so happy it turned out that way! Our waiter, Dennis, anticipated our every need, the food was served quickly and piping hot, and the margaritas were delicious. I’d recommend this restaurant. Four stars!

Every time I go here the food portions get smaller, and the prices get higher. They used to have a seafood burrito, that I did like. It is gone. The last time I went the food was ok, but not great. After paying a decent price for a meal though, I was still hungry after eating, and I am not a huge eater.

To be honest, we did not expect a lot from a Mexican restaurant in the Soo, having so many outstanding ones where we're from. We couldn't have been more wrong. Since we are dining during the pandemic, we wanted to eat outside. The patio area is small but we still felt safe dining there as tables are not squeezed closely together. The friendly hostess seated us, and quickly our equally friendly waiter appeared. We ordered a beer and a cocktail (blue something or other), and then our dinners. I ordered the Portage Street tacos and hubby had the chimichanga. My tacos were stuffed full and I couldn't finish them both. I ordered one maple bacon chicken, and one Kentucky bourbon steak. They were served with rice and a choice of beans. Nothing about this meal says "I came from a can and am ordinary." The food was knock your socks off and try to find them a month later good. I am salivating just thinking about the meal. Hubby's chimichanga was declared superb and the perfect size. We would travel to the Soo just to eat at this restaurant. We'd love to dine inside because it is so charming with the tin ceilings and ambient lighting. Perhaps next time we will be able to, but if we can't, we will wait a long time to get a table outside because the Palace is worth it. We just wish it was in Chicago.

My family orders the Mexican dishes and are always very happy with their food. I order either German nachos, pulled pork, chicken wrap or reuben sandwich, all are spectacular. Great French fries - I usually order them extra crispy. We've never had bad service. It was a nice day so we asked to be seated outside, only ones out there, waitress happy to accommodate and we were concerned she might not check on us much but she did, friendly, prompt, with accurate order. Their flour chips are delicious! They have a fabulous cinnamon ice cream dessert that's delicious too. Good salads. Just a great menu, lots of options, great service, fun atmosphere!

Visiting friends who live in the Soo, they suggested an early dinner at the Palace. The Palace has a very interesting history dating back to the early 1900’s. We were seated in the back in a comfortable and private booth (it had high backs of the seats). The menu was new to me, but my friends knew exactly what to order. I ordered a prickly pear margarita which was excellent. Our server was great and never far away. She brought out our food quickly and it was as good as I was told earlier. You have to order their Con Queso with mixed chips!!
