Tony does a great job with his family run business and we’ve enjoyed the coffee, soups, and sandwiches during our time here in SSM. They have many menu options available and it’s fresh food NOT out of a Sysco truck. It’s great to see a local business using a common sense approach to serving the public. Many locals visit here daily and this place is highly respected. As a veteran I thank Tony for his support of all who serve or have served our country. This place will be our goto coffee shop on our annual trip to SSM from Louisiana.

Stopped for soup and sandwich lunch after walking out from another local establishment ( soup of the day in menu but was not available and bec. place was filthy) ) Cup of The Day Tomato Basil Bisque was delicious and plentiful and Manhattan Reuben is the best in town, and atmosphere was relaxed, service friendly and place was clean. Got out moneys worth for sure.

The is a very warm and friendly coffee shop. It's a very cozy environment if you just want to have coffee and chat with someone, or just sit and people-watch. Prices are reasonable and they provide very good quality products.

The owner of this place is a small man with a big attitude. I ordered lunch with my wife on a business trip and when we went to sit down, I was appalled to hear the man running the place make a suggestive comment about my wife!!! Before I got up to confront him, his barista scolded him and a back and forth argument ensued.
My wife and I were shocked, and felt like we were in the twilight zone (or stuck in 1998 based on the decor...). We decided to find somewhere else to go, so I approached the side door where the small man was now very angry and sharply said "What do you want?!" I told him we heard everything he said and would like to get our money back and leave. He pointed to a mess of bread and meat and said he wouldn't give our money back because our order was already made. I insisted that we get a refund and call it a day, to which he threw a bunch of things on some bread that looked worse than McDonalds and threw it all in a paper bag and said "Go! Get out!"
We left with no refund and no food - the bag of what looked like compost did not even have the Tomato Basil Bisque we ordered included and we were not about to engage this small man with any further attempt at intellectual dialog.
Cup of the Day is a Cafe that time forgot, and we will never return. The place looks like 1998, the small owner was very inconsiderate of my wife and I, and the food looked atrocious. We went a little further around the corner to Penny's Kitchen and had a wonderful experience there. They even offered us a free dessert to make up for the experience at Cup of the Day to show us that the greater Sault community is better than that.

We walked into the restaurant and a small boy was riding his bike throughout the restaurant. His mother who worked there very nonchalantly told him to stop, but he didn’t. We reluctantly stayed. Mom (who made us feel stupid for not remembering the name of the salad we wanted when we placed our order) and unruly child left (after him “demanding” she put his shoes on her obliging)
The remainder of our lunch was very pleasant, atmosphere was cute, like a gift shop with tables. The food was fantastic! Would definitely come again if I knew mom
and kid weren’t there.
There were other children of employees, including one with “the mom” there as well, but they were all well behaved. We have 7 children, including special needs children and this isn’t an atmosphere to bring them while trying to run a business.

Just wanted to say thank you for your kind words and how much you enjoyed your meal and atmosphere. Based on those comments I should have gotten 5-starts and not a lowly 3.
As far as my wife and my son being here next time you stop in to our FAMILY RUN BUSINESS, there's a good chance they will be here again.
Not sure if you noticed all the HELP WANTED signs around the country but we too have been looking for help for the last 16 months. People would rather collect their federal unemployment bonus than work.
My wife actually had to start helping me run my cafe last fall or I would have had to close my small family business. I sincerely apologize that my 5 year old son isn't quite as well behaved as my 7 year old daughter who was in the back room. She used to be like that a couple years back too.
I actually love the fact that my family can be at work with me since I spend about 13 hours a day here.

My sister, mother & I stopped here for lunch. I had the chicken salad on a croissant- it was delicious- lots of chicken salad. I can't remember the name of the sandwich that my mother & sister had, it was roast beef and I remember they mentioned horseradish, they both loved it. The shop has many unique gifts- puzzles of sites in the UP! Besides, tables, there's a bar that faces the window- a person could eat and watch those going by.

My family and I have been attempting to have a socially distanced road trip through northern Michigan for the past week, and every establishment we’ve visited has had protocols in place that accord with CDC guidance (and rationality) re: COVID: mask requirements, hand sanitizer, procedures that indicate that the restaurant is taking this global pandemic seriously, etc.
Except Cup of the Day. The owner’s utter disregard for even basic safety measures was glaring. He wasn’t wearing a mask at all, nor was there a mask in sight behind the counter. And the owner makes all of the sandwiches and pours all of the coffee by (COVID-infested) hand. I was shocked and alarmed, to say the least. The message the owner wanted to send to his customers was crystal clear: He didn’t think COVID was real, let alone something worth making even the most minimal of efforts to combat. I was stunned by the blatant indifference.
In fact, the owner went out of his way to make it clear that the health of his customers was utterly subordinate to his personal/political views. As you can see from the picture, in the owner’s mind, masks are “useless” and COVID is simply an “ordeal” that doesn’t warrant even basic safety precautions, in a food establishment no less.
Bottom line: Cup of the Day would be a mediocre cafe in the best of times, and now it’s a mediocre cafe with an utter disregard for the health of its customers. Don’t bother.

Sorry folks but I have to clear up some facts with this belligerent little family from New York and their petty inaccurate review.
First of all when you visited Chippewa County and cup of the Day in July there was no mask mandate requirement in Michigan, it was only recommended.
With all truth and honesty, from your photo if you had taken a picture of that entire table you would see on the top of that table there are sanitizing wipes and sanitizing hand gel for our staff use as well as for our customers. That’s typical for people like you who want to only show a half truth and try to use it to your advantage.
If you’re so concerned about coronavirus why did you leave New York when both governors of Michigan and New York recommended that you do not travel. Why did you bring your contagious state of New York to upper Michigan? The facts would show that your selfish visit to Michigan and our city had a greater risk for you to infect our community and put our citizen in danger. That’s not only selfish but it’s self-serving, disingenuous and disgusting.
Furthermore in July Chippewa County had four cases of coronavirus and zero – so why did you travel from New York to bring your contagious state to our beautiful upper Peninsula of Michigan!
My café, my family business, has been open through this whole ordeal, serving more than 200 people a day, and we have not seen one infected case in here, no one in my establishment has gotten sick or died, my staff including me and my family are perfectly healthy and have not infected a single person.
And lastly , Cup of the Day follows, meets & exceeds all guidelines policies and procedures of the Michigan Food Code and the Food Law of the State of Michigan, mandated and enforced by the Chippewa County Health Department.

Great value for the price. Large portions and only $1 a cup of coffee. Specialty coffees are made from scratch no mixes.

If you spend any time in Tony's establishment you would know how much care and effort goes into every handcrafted beverage and meal. I may be biased but after observing the family oriented atmosphere and a warm home-y feeling attached to this business there is no better place to get lunch in town. If anything I can guarantee you will be greeted with smiling faces and ensured a great experience.

Mediocre food for price. Service was challenging, "iffy" at best. Serving up reheated sysco food is a tough sell.

Took my niece here for lunch during Spring break for something new. Big mistake. Someone needs to tell the guy working that if you're gonna be smug to paying customers you better have the quality to back it up. Anybody can serve Sysco food. Won't return.
