To my mind, Breedekloof is the Cinderella of wine-growing regions. (If you're not sure where to find it, as I wasn't: Take the exit just before Worcester on the N1). Unlike many other regions it is refreshingly un-gentrified, sort of what Franschhoek used to be....Just 15 minutes off the highway is Bergsig Wine Estate and its Bistro. You have a choice to sit it in the stylish yet unpretentious dining room or on the upstairs stoep with stunning views over the vineyards. The service is genuine country hospitality. Both food and wine are unassuming yet delicious. I can't remember when last I had a good glass of white for R 35. My personal favourite was the wine pairing of a cup of chocolate soup and a glass of port. (If you read R 40 on the menu your eyes didn't let you down). I am convinced that, like Cinderella, Bergsig Bistro will soon be recognised for the gem that it is.More

we came from the Bainskloof pass and noticed the Bergsig winery signs. We used to drink the Bergsig chardonnay at home so decided to have a tasting. Friendly service and several winetasting options. We chose the option of the winepairing with fricadels (meatballs) and the...tasting with springrolls. I don't think the pairing always worked but it was interesting as we also had the tasting of there top wines and they had a free option to have a tasting of chardonnays , 6 vintages, next to each other and same for pinotage. Great way to discover the differences. We bought a few of the wines to drink on our trip. They also had al little Deli shop with local produce.More

Even though it says free wi-fi no-one knows the password. Vegetable soup actually had pieces of meat in it. As a vegetarian I find this unacceptable. Will never go back

We were on our way to Tulbagh on a wet and cold day, and in bad need of something warm in our tummies, when we spotted the sign on the road side announcing Bergsig Bistro, so turned in and found one of the gems of...the region. I ordered the venison pie and chips, and my wife chose a bobotie crepe and salad, and we combined our meal with a wine tasting (4 wines = R20.00), which turned out to be just what the doctor ordered! Both meals were fantastic, and the wine excellent. We ended our meal in the comfy lounge sofas provided with coffee, and I with Malva pudding and ice cream, and my wife with a lemon square - both very excellent. This is a well worthwhile stop for wine tasting and a light meal. The Bistro is beautifully clean and tastefully furnished, and the service polite and friendly. After your meal you can buy wine and local delicacies at the attached shopMore

What a pleasant surprise, the staff were pleasant and accommodating, the menu at the bistro was limited, but the venison pie and chips was delicious. The highlight of the visit was a bottle of Bergsig 2014 Cab. Possibly one of the best reds I've had...in a long time. Could quite easily have spent the rest of the afternoon just relaxing there.More

We had a little trouble finding it, as the road layout was different from a previous visit, but you can get there from all roads so no need to worry. On other occasions, our friends, with whom we were, had been able to have a...large selection for lunch, but on our visit the lunch menu may be considered a little limited. There was quiche, toasted sandwiches or salad. The food was good, though, and the service friendly. And the wine good, of course.More
