Very small order at the counter type of place. Small eating area. Very basic but the food is good. Will takeout next time. Good size portions. Sausage, chicken, pulled pork all really good. Mac and cheese and yams are good choices for sides. The corn...muffin was not very tasty. The kid working the counter was “lethargic” but not actually impolite. The lady working in the kitchen wasn’t a bundle of joy either. Actually the only person who seemed happy we dropped in was the gentleman who probably was “PaPa” himself. Recommend the meat combo with a side of mac and cheese.More
On a road trip from NOLA to Pcola and discovered this hidden gem, thx to Trip Advisor! We shared the 3 meat (brisket, chicken and ribs) combo with bbq sauce on the side and voles slaw and collard greens. Well...the meat is so flavorful and...exquisitely tender that sauce isn't even needed. My husband is a big brisket lover and he said it was the best he's EVER eaten. Every single bite was fresh and homemade from the finely shredded slaw to the mouth watering collards. I love finding local establishments like this one! Treat yourself to some of the best eatin' and go see Papa!More
This place is just off Old Spanish Trail on Slidell Ave. As you first walk in, there is a counter to order your meal. I had ordered the Combo Platter ‘Pick 2’, which I got the Two Ribs, Sliced Brisket, Corn on the Cobb and...the Candied Yams.
First, I was happy this place uses the Sparerib type for their Ribs. The meat on them was tasty and tender. The Brisket was a little dry / lean for my taste. Candied Yams was good. You get a choice of regular or Spicy BBQ sauce. I had asked for both, but on the side. I preferred the spicy.
When I’m back in Slidell, I will eat here again.More
Road trip from Orlando to LSU with family (Wife, 5 children one friend, 15-21) I ask the baby, Connor, my "Navigator"; I want BBQ for lunch, outside of New Orleans, small place, family owned, along the way and a good rating. "Papa's Backyard BBQ", 5...stars he answered within 3 minutes (Smart phones, smart kids!) 5 Stars?? Yes sir, FIVE, he replied. And Just off I-10. Directed me in, as promised a mile or so off the interstate. Strip center on the back side. We were a tad early to beat the lunch crowd. NOTHING fancy, the best way to find them. Smell of smoke and BBQ! Family run. Wife at the register and husband at the grill, couple of young men (Assuming sons) working the extras. We all ordered individually at the counter and grabbed a table. Actually 3 tables, 8 of us. Small place. We did wait a bit longer than I would have thought. BBQ was delivered. AWESOME. I had brisket sandwich, perfect. I chose the spicey sauce, Honey and regular if I recall was available. EVERYONE was Happy! Connor was congratulated on the find. One of the girls requested some bread pudding offered. The "Mom" owner, heated it up and added rum sauce. WOW! I usually am not a desert person especially at lunch, but WOW! If she had some vanilla ice cream to add, I would have moved in!! We realized why they have FIVE stars, BECAUSE SIX is NOT an option!! "To Go" was considered, seriously. Dad ex Marine, Semper Fi.More
This is one of the places you see and say. It looks small and kind of hmm. This guy cooks all of the food and makes his own BBQ sauce. Plenty of space inside to sit. Really great food. Best BBQ in town in my...opinion. He is a Veteran to. Family run. Took time to speak to him and he's been here for 8yrs. Best secret around.More
A little hole in the wall with a great selection of BBQ meats, delicious pecan pie and sweet tea. I was there with 3 friends and we all went away stuffed. The side dishes had a great flavor, but were a bit small. Still, I...can't avoid the 5 star rating because at the end of the meal there was just no room for anything else.More
