Gorgeous place, the kitchen is inside the restaurant and you can check out everything in there, the food is perfect, the size, flavor, and wine pairing was just amazing. Worth the time and money! Spend 50 dollars for a couple. I had the beef menu...and the duck menu!More

Having made a reservation one month in advance from Germany, we were looking forward to the dinner at this restaurant. While Babylonstoren at first glance gives a good impression, Babel fell much below expectations. The vegetables may come from their own garden, but if they...are not cooked and presented properly what use is all that. Our side dish eggplant was not cooked through. The slices were unevenly cut, so one side of the slice was cooked while the other side was partially raw. My starter, supposed to be like a ceviche (raw marinated fish) with apricots, was served in a sour broth, and thick pieces of fish arranged like a flower with sliced radish. There were more radish than fish. It was tasteless. Uncomfortable metal chairs, loud atmosphere and the very superficial service. We were so disappointed with the food that we decided to skip the dessert and leave. The prices do not justify the quality of food and service. What a disappointment.More

We made sure to go back, after absolutely loving the place 2 years ago. Unfortunately it looks like something changed in the meantime, and not for the best. Compared to the creativity and bliss we enjoyed in our first visit, food was clearly at another...(lower) level, with a pretty unimaginative offer on the menu and preparations that left pretty much to desire. A pity. Service stayed at the other hand at the same excellent level and the estate as a whole remains an unmissable stop in your trip in the area.More

Having read some excellent reviews on Babel on TA and finding out they were closed on Mondays, we visited on a Sunday on our way from Cape Town to Franschoek with a car that was packed with cases! The first shock was just how busy...it was; we (naively) thought we'd be the only people there but it took us 10 minutes to find a parking space..mobbed! We went straight to reception and were given a mini-map to find our way to Babel and wandered across the gravel to the restaurant. We were asked where we would like to sit and having never been before I asked "If this was your first trip here, where would you most like to sit?!"; we were duly taken to a beautiful table outside, under a shady leaf-covered canopy, next to a water feature and a window overlooking the vineyards and mountains...perfect! Our waiter Herschelle introduced himself and he really was a complete star. For me, waiting staff can make or break a meal and Herschelle was friendly, informative, good-natured and just the perfect model of what a good server could and should be (he's a credit to Babel!). Now on to the food itself. For us, it was the best meal we had across a two week Garden Route trip, which included some incredible restaurants (Chefs Warehouse Tintswalo, Nobu, Kloof St and others). From the bread, cheese, honey, grapes and figs pre starters, to the cucumber soup and corn starters, we were blown away. The mains were a sea bass and a risotto, the latter of which was the best and most tasty I have had in any country (including Italy!). The only regret I have is not having any room for dessert, which two weeks later as I sit in cloudy London, I am really annoyed with myself about...what's a few extra lbs on an already bloated waistline?!?!? To conclude, I would highly recommend a trip to Babel; the setting, food and service are exceptional.More

Our lunch experience at Babel Restaurant was amazing! The farm-to-fork approach made for a wonderful experience and a truly delicious meal. I loved that the gardener came to our table to inform us about some of the fresh fruits and vegetables as well as the...featured vegetable dishes. She even gave us some fresh clementines to enjoy (and they were delicious!). It was such a nice touch. The wine and food were delicious, and it was reasonably priced for the amount of food we received. I had the chiana and mustard which was incredible! My husband had the Glen Oaks pork and it was just as tasty. We ordered a side of the slow-braised cabbage which was delicious. In addition to what we ordered, they also brought us some amazing bread with a tomato spread and the best radicchio salad I’ve ever had (my husband doesn’t even like radicchio and he loved the salad!). To end the meal, they gave us a little bottle of olive oil to take home that was made right there on the farm. It was truly a fabulous experience. Definitely go if you are visiting Franschhoeck!More

Today I had an unfortunate experience at a restaurant that left me quite disappointed. After hearing positive reviews about the place, I decided to give it a try. However, my experience was far from satisfactory due to several reasons. Firstly, the lack of responsiveness from...the restaurant's staff was concerning. I made several attempts to contact them by phone before my visit, hoping to inquire about their availability and make a reservation. Unfortunately, despite numerous calls, no one answered the phone, which left me feeling frustrated and unsure about the situation. Undeterred, I decided to take a chance and visit the restaurant in person. To my surprise, I had to endure a 35-minute drive on a rainy day only to be informed upon arrival that the establishment operates solely on a reservation basis. While I understand the importance of reservations for managing customer flow, it would have been helpful if this information was communicated clearly on their website or through a voicemail message when I called earlier. What added to my disappointment was the fact that there were vacant tables available for the next 1.5 hours and the restaurant was almost empty. Despite this, the staff refused to serve us, stating that they were already booked for the evening. It was disheartening to see that they were unwilling to accommodate us, especially when we were prepared to dine within the time frame before the next reservation arrived. This refusal to accommodate walk-in guests, coupled with the lack of responsiveness and communication, left a sour taste in my mouth. As a customer, I value transparency and good service, both of which were lacking in this experience. It is crucial for restaurants to ensure they have efficient communication channels in place, such as a responsive phone system or an online reservation system, to avoid frustrating situations like the one I encountered. Additionally, a more flexible approach to walk-in customers, especially when there are available tables, would greatly improve customer satisfaction and foster a positive dining experience. Regrettably, based on my encounter, I cannot recommend this restaurant. It is my hope that they take these shortcomings into account and make the necessary improvements to provide a better experience for their potential patrons.More

The farm to table food was fresh, inventive, and generous. But the real superstar of this restaurant is Reggie, who is passionate about elevating the customer experience — and he delivered, big time.

We really enjoyed our lunch at Babel, it was one of the meals we enjoyed most during our stay in the Cape. The ethos here is clear, it shines through in the dishes and the staff. We had some amazing tomatoes and wonderful bread (so...we bought a loaf to take with us!). The meat dishes were also great. Service was upbeat, passionate and relaxed at the same time. Thank you for a great lunch!More

Lovely produce straight from the farm and garden, but less impressed with the service. The servers seemed tired and curt. At breakfast there were flies gathering on the buffet food and nobody seemed to care. Disappointing compared with the rest of Babylonstoren, where the service...and food were wonderful.More
