About
The Snake Pit, built in 1880, is Idaho's oldest restaurant. We serve breakfast, lunch and dinner 7 days a week all year long. Our ribs, pork, brisket and salmon are all smoked in-house, and we are notorious for the best Rocky Mountain Oysters in the area. The historic building is full of memorabilia from the last century of mining and logging. Finish this all off with house-baked pie or wild Idaho huckleberry ice cream and you have a perfect day. We are on the North Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River in an ideal spot for fly-fishing, bicycling, hunting, floating and camping.

Finally tried the oldest resto in Idaho. Breakfast was great. A bit unique, too, because their signature Buffalo Chips are something I've never tried before. Think a cross between a cottage fry and a potato chip. I was first, 'wha-what the h***?,' but after my obligatory splashes of tabasco verde, the addiction began. Had to fight off my Wifey for the entire meal. However, she had to fight me off her biscuits and gravy, so... Plenty of cream and sugar on your table for your coffee. Our waitress was a pro, and prices were good. Another one of those places where you wish it was closer to home, but cool to only visit on random leisure travels...

We went there with our grandson & other grandparents while our daughter was in the hospital to give us our next grandson. Plenty of atmosphere, old atmosphere, it's a very old building. Food was good, not gourmet but tasty, at least what we has was, Fish & Chips, Smoked Salmon Appitizer & Idaho Notchos Appitizer. My wife enjoyed her Smoked Salmon, Fish & Chips were good, the Notchos were OK, the kind of thing you like or don't, probably great for a hangover.

Breakfast has limited menu. Eggs were prepared OK but served cold. French toast likewise served cold. Nice sausage patties. Service was slow and not so friendly. Prices are OK. Not much competition so no need to improve.

Awful food / nice atmosphere We ordered rib-eye steaks. They was 34.95 each. Which we thought was fine, for a good steak. What we got was steak suitable for a Dennys breakfast, maybe. I mean awful looking. Worst tasting. They was cooked properly. Mine was medium rare, wife’s was medium. But they tasted awful. Looked like the proverbial shoe leather but tougher. The waitress was very nice, but…she never once asked how are meal was. When she came back to take our plates that literally had 1 bite taken from each steak, she didn’t bat an eye that we hadn’t eaten them. The restaurant is very cool rustic Idaho/Montana. So is the $35 a person for atmosphere worth it when the food is terrible. I don’t personally think so. If I was reviewing the food alone, it would be 1 star. I’m adding a star for the decor and the friendly waitress.

We live locally and good restaurants are hard to find. The Snakpit is convenient as it is on the way home. We (party of 3) arrived at 6pm mid week. We were quickly seated and there were 7 occupied tables. We then had a 20 minute wait for our order to be taken, had to ask twice for drinks. Then a110 minute wait for 3 sandwiches. A Rueben…they forgot the sauerkraut, a French dip ….they forgot the horseradish and a cheesesteak with sauted onions and mushrooms. The onions had no caramelization and there were 3 slices of shiitake mushrooms. I have worked in fine dining and shitakes do not sauté well.$78 lighter and very disappointed. Locals are sticking with Timbers roadhouse.

We were on a scenic drive to do some trails with our dogs and stopped for a bite to eat. There was a picnic table outside separate from their outside dining area (which they said was closed due to short staffing). We asked for food to go since we had our dogs and had seen a couple leaving with to go food as we arrived. They refused to give us carry out saying it was their policy because of liability. When pressed, we we’re told if we choked on carry out food they would be liable!🤔🙀

I realize the price of meat is up because of Covid-19, but the staff should inform you want is NOT available on the menu instead of waiting for you to order it. They aren't selling any steaks because of the price of meat, but the item is still on the menu. If you are gluten-free or any other special dietary needs try another place to eat. Items that might be labeled as potential gluten-free are cooked in the same oil as everything else. Most of their other meats were on the dry side. Other items were slightly over cooked. Their cooking does need so fine tuning.

We've been very patient when going out to eat as we realize that staffing is a problem in almost every business these days. However this experience at Snake Pit did not seem short-staff related. The place was not busy as we hit there around 3:30. There were at least 2 servers and another one or two persons who kept telling people that they could not take their order and would get their server. We heard this several times. It seems that staff is adequate but not cooperating with each other. Our server never checked back with us after we got our meals to see if everything was ok. Then she just brought the check without asking us if we wanted anything else. Indeed we were planning on getting a huckleberry shake to go but we were disgusted and just left. Shame because the food was very good. We both had pulled pork which came with slaw. Also got Buffalo chips which also were tasty. Everything was presented nicely and cooked properly and tasted fine. We probably won't return though due to our experience with poor service.

The Snake Pit is a MUST TRY if you're passing through or to just drive there to try. We ordered the 3 meat plate so that we could taste all and it didn't disappoint. We also ordered the pulled pork sandwich and chicken bacon ranch sandwich with sweet potato fries and no disappointment there as well. When we got there it was fairly empty but got busy quick. After eating we knew why. The Snake Pit is a MUST TRY

Short staffed most of the restaurant roped off. told over an hour wait, which is too bad because in the past have always had good food and service, needless to say my date and i left and went somewhere else. Better get a clue you are losing a lot of business. And we will not return.

I was a child 1st time 30 yrs ago eating at this place. I remember stories of people who lived nearby talking about the Good Old Days. We went mine exploring nearby and this is where we came to eat. Mines are gone now and so are the Smoke Stacks of the Silver Mine smelters. But Good Old Snake Pit remains with a new batch of locals telling stories of the Good Old Days and still looking like the characters out of a book. Same as the Name of this Historic Eating Establishment! ....but if you're high n mighty best hurry over the pass to Spokane to eat in Plain Jane Sterile Restaurant for Snobs! btw.... new Deck was great addition. Nice people a pleasure experience for friendly, neighborly people!

What a fun filled restaurant, bar. Went there for the music and yummy food. No disappointment here, great music with T & Company and Prime Rib dinner. Can’t wait to enjoy the great music & food again.

The Burger I deserved after 2 weeks of Mountain Biking in Idaho. Good service, great burgers, crazy building. It was quite busy for a Thursday night, I would recommend booking ahead.

We keep stopping here, however, they are always "short staffed". This time there were seven if us (as usual) and they had an entire dining area roped off and were not letting anyone sit there. (With the exception, of one family for unknown reasons.) The older gal, who is always there, and is also always so very rude, did not want to do anything to accommodate us and had no qualms about letting good customers walk out the door. (The younger gal was very pleasant.) We were told to try another restaurant, or wait over an hour, (even though their restaurant was not at all full.) The younger girl advised us of another option called the Hilltop. We decided we would try that, since we had no other option, and were quite happy with it. The service was good, even though they were busy as well. They were pleasant, accommodating, efficient, timely, and the food was good. We will go back... To the Hilltop, that is.

Even though they have a large, covered deck just outside the main dining area, we were told we couldn't eat outside due to short staffing. We were biking the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes and chose to ride on.
