The view is breathtaking - overlooking the Valley of a Thousand Hills. We were warmly welcomed and the staff and service were great. We ordered the meat platter to share and this was most disappointing. We were given one small triangle of cheese, four pieces...of bread and a choice of four types of meat, one of which was as tough and uneatable.More

We visited on a Sunday and enjoyed a lovely brunch at the restaurant. While waiting for our food, we browsed the Yes chef deli where you can also see the young chefs preparing your feed while you wait. The deli had a selection of artisan...bread, handmade cheese, meat as well as some jams etc. The selection was limited (probably due to it being a Sunday) and the goods didn't have prices on which delayed the shopping experience as the lady that helped us had to scurry about confirming the prices As it's a learning centre for young chefs, the team is eager, friendly but can be a bit hesitant as they find their way around so treat them with good humor and compassion as they find their courage in this new environment A very good option for an outing while you're in the areaMore

The Chef School took a bad turn about a year ago. However the new owners seem to be putting in a lot of effort into upping the standard. The menu has improved a lot and there are some standard vegan and vegetarian options which is...great! The beer brewed on site is not so great, however. They definitely need a professional in there. Craft beer has taken off in a big way and these guys have not kept up.More

The place is very large with seating inside near the rather noisy kitchen, on the veranda or outside on the picnic benches. The trainee chefs seem to work the kitchen and the waitroning (is this actually a word?). Very cordial reception and an interesting menu....We tried the first platter on the list and were surprised at the quantity of food for the price - very reasonable. If I have to offer advice it would be to cut down on the sauces and add more cheese to the platter. The pate was delicious as was the sourdough bread. The craft beer was also very good and being a lunch allowed one to select a low alcohol option. I can recommend the custard slices. Very enjoyable - will be back with friends soon.More

Loved it Love the breads can’t wait to go back and try out more of their beers. We were sorry we were in such a hurry and did not spend more time there.

Visiting the restaurant (now called 1000 Hills Brewery) has become an institution over the years every time we are in the area. Again we were very satisfied with the quality of tastes on offer: Both the lamb curry and BBQ chicken pizza were extremely good....And the beers are still a firm favourite...More

It's Sunday, and my housemate and I have a ritual of going for breakfast outdoors. Today we decided on breakfast with a view, and began hunting for the best spot. The beach was out, too windy. Too many restaurants in Durban lack a decent view....And then, thanks to TripAdvisor, we found Quills in Bothas Hill. This location is inland, west of the city and looks out onto the famous Valley of a Thousand Hills. We'd found our spot! Both of us ordered the Eggs Benedict, delicious on sourdough with a house made Hollandse sauce and house made bacon. I thoroughly recommend this country restaurant attached to the 1000 Hills Chef School and look forward to visiting again, for a lunch or dinner!More

If great food at very reasonable prices and excellent beer is your thing, do yourself a huge favour and take the short detour from the N3 onto the old main road. Mostly open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Warm welcome from trainee chefs at the 1000hills chef school. Lovely ambience..were treated to a tasting plate and sampled beer before deciding on what to drink. Amazing food and a decent little deli to buy preserves and baked goodies. Open Fri to Sunday. Well worth...a visit!More

Lovely setting, with trainee waitrons from the 1000 Hills Chef School. Small menu which changes regularly. Extremely reasonable prices, and great craft beer on offer, also can take it away - on sale in their shop.

The restaurant does serve breakfast. We have only eaten in the afternoon and found the prices to be between R50-110 for a meal.
