Lovely steaks and good service. Recommended! Nice atmosphere, good views of the ocean. Could be a bit noisy based on the location next to a main road.

We visit Port Elizabeth once a year to attend the Herald Cycle Tour and usually eat dinner at The Coachman. Last night was such a disappointment. The restaurant was fully booked. We arrived at 7pm and waited more than 90 minutes for our mains. All...the tables around us who arrived later than us received their food while we waited for ours. By 20 tot 10pm we decided to leave without any food as it still was not ready to be served. The waiter and manager's excuse was the kitchen was in chaos because there was a lot of large tables. This is not acceptable and it is sad to see that the restaurant has deteriorated such a lot. We will never recommend them to anybody and will definitely never return there.More

Disappointing food, surf and turf fillet overdone smothered in a sauce so the calamari was tasteless and we waited for an hour for our main course. My wife’s lamb chops were nice but like warm, were the veggies.

Place was packed so we thought we would be in for a great dining experience. What a disappointment. Shared a starter of scallops which were an absolute ripoff, R300 for 4 scallops that were the size of a 10 cent piece. Apart from the size...they were dry and stringy. The garlic snails were well below par. Mains were slightly better. Initially wanted kingklip which ended up being unavailable - probably a good thing as any form of seafood in this town seems to be mostly disappointing. To their credit the various fillets we had were perfectly cooked and had tasty sauces. The pork ribs and lamb chops went down well. For a restaurant that claims to have been the first to serve calamari in PE….. well they’ve dropped the ball or it never was really good. The sides were nothing to write home about, fries were dry and tasteless, vegetables nothing fresh and crisp just old school boereboontjies and mashed butternut. Skipped dessert as we’d already been fleeced +R2k for what can only be described as a well below average dining experience.More

This restaurant was packed when we arrived for dinner. We waited at the bar for a table and they took forever to offer us drinks. Apart from the outdated decor (blue lights everywhere - horror !) the menu is also very old fashioned. We had...a scallop starter that was very, very disappointing - the tiniest, dry and stringy scallops x 4 (we got an extra one because we were sharing) for almost R300 - what a rip off ! These people should be ashamed of having that on their menu. It is frozen seafood - you can buy better at Woolworths ! The mains were ok - steaks were good, calamari (frozen crumbed strips) average, the ribs and chops looked juicy. We were not offered options as sides even though the menu gave a choice of baked potato we were told it would be extra. The chips were just sad - tasteless and inconsistently cooked. The side vegetables were good. Portions were generous so at least that felt like value for money.More

A classical elegant dining with good food, excellent venue and good service. The Waitron was knowledgeable and made good suggestions.

This place is a must try in my opinion. The T-Bone steak and Fillet was amazing. Tasted so good. Being from the UK the prices here are exceptionally good. If or when I come back to Summerstrand I will definitely be returning to this restaurant.

This restaurant used to be top notch. My order today of the sole was clearly not fresh. I Ate a few bites. Sent it back. Not one person from the restaurant asked me about it nor asked if I wanted something else instead and it...was still kept on my bill. The bill had a 10% gratuity automatically added. We were not a table of 10. I, without fail, tip 20% of the bill as standard and despite the not great food I would have done so today too, but that automatic adding and them just not caring about a dish that cost R350 that I hardly touched and sent back just led to me leaving the 10% tip. Restaurant is definitely on the decline when it comes to customer attention and service, not to mention food quality.More

I was enthusiast when seeing the menu. This turned around as we were waiting for more than an hour for our order to be served. If the kitchen can not handle the volume, then reduce the number of seats. I will advice the tour guide...to not use this restaurant anymore.More

We have eaten at The Coachman many times over the years …. Last night was a let down…. It seems thst the restaurant was overbooked for the size of the kitchen or maybe they are horribly understaffed. Our waiter seemed to be running around serving...too many tables as well. We ordered drinks and waited dry-mouth for about an half hour… they were just standing on the bar counter- nobody bringing them until I called our waiter which was hanging around in the reception area at thst stage. The starters were not up to standard- extremely salty halloumi, and the mussels had some spice added on top on which was not stated on the menu…. (Allergy sufferers be ware!) We waited more than an hour for our main dishes! The steak was still good as well as side dishes. Feels like things are going downhill….More

My friend and I visited the restaurant on Saturday 4 February 2023 at 2pm for a business lunch. Sine we were not that hungry we ordered the butternut soup that is usually very appetising and well prepared. We were shocked when the soup was served...with with blocks of cold pieces of feta cheese that could not even blend in with the soup. I called one of the waitresses (Taahira) who didn’t serve us that it’s the worst meal ever served at the Coachman. She told us that she’ll call the waitress (who was very disengaged); this one when told couldn’t care less and disappeared.More

The crumbed calamari was AMAZING! that was the only thing good of our enitire experience. We had a crumbed mushroom starter...which was literally 4 mushrooms. Incredibly noisy for a date night, so way better for a family outing. We will not return.

We did make reservations both times we visited in December. Looking at how busy they get I think that it is advisable.
