Food was not superb. But average like in many Japanese neighborhood sushi restaurants. But the servers were kind for America as they tend to apply American level of hospitality. Chawan mushinwas sub-standard. That’s the reason for 3 stars, not 4. Without drinking the price was...over $70 including tips for two special sushi plates, one salad and one chawan mushi. It might be reasonable for the US customers. But not for Japanese customers.More

This appears to be a family run business in a hole in the wall across the street from the Costa Mesa Hilton, so not only is it a good place for sushi, it's convenient for a quick dinner as well. While we had some simple...items like a churashi bowl, while we were dining, we could glance at other menu items to see the diversity offered. The people next to us order black cod: the chef took out four filets and cooked them with a blowtorch, wrapped them up in something, served them and our neighbors yummed with delight. This is not a bargain sushi place; expect to pay OC prices for the food at this unique restaurant.More

I am close to here at the Hilton for a business trip. I decided to use the lottery system of “restaurants near me” and man did I hit a winner!! This place is very small so you have to enjoy being close to people. I...sat at the sushi bar and I’m pretty sure the sushi chef was some deity of sushi. I had a couple different rolls and plan to go back and try more. If you’re in Costa Mesa do yourself a favor and check this place out.More

We accidentally walked into this small, cozy restaurant the day after new year. Great sushi/sashimi food, quick and friendly service. Best in Costa Mesa !

The freshest tasting sushi I’ve had in a looooooong time. Soy sauce and wasabi not needed. Very quaint place. Traditional nigiri and maki. Not super-“Americanized” futomaki. I definitely will eat here again when we return in May.

Located in a strip mall, not at all fancy, but definitely authentic. It is a small restaurant with a sushi bar and a few tables. No reservations are accepted. They have been around for a long time, and the sushi chefs are Japanese and fantastic....The food is traditional, and it is consistently good. We also appreciate the servers for they are friendly and attentive. Thank you to everyone at Angotei :)More

Was a once a year regular five years ago. Don't know why we stopped going here during annual convention visit. Place is still really good. Small. Not pretty from the street, but it is certainly good. Service was superior. Taka at the sushi bar was...quick and he made some great food for me.More

I go to Costa Mesa from NJ on business monthly staying at a local hotel. I find myself at Angotei monthly as well. I always sit at the sushi bar where I meet locals and chat or just read my newspaper and have a beer....The sushi is always fresh and the sushi chefs are pretty social. My favorites are the Spanish Mackerel, Halibut and especially the Albacore and Kampachi (Amberjack). I also eat the Philly Roll and Rainbow Roll when there. It is reasonably priced and a great place to just pop in.More

Very friendly staff. Seating at sushi bar or few tables. Menu was limited. Food was good, although not someplace I would return, unless I needed something quick and dining alone. Great place for business travelers to grab a quick bite.

I dined here when travelling alone on business on a Saturday evening. The place was very busy filled with regulars who obviously know the staff well. The servers and chefs were friendly and service was fine, not too intrusive. The sushi was really tasty with...generous cuts of fish and it was nice to sit at the counter and talk to the friendly chefs making the sushi. Highly recommended as a contrast to hotel and other large restaurants. My only complaint was that my tamago was cold otherwise I might have stretched to 5 stars!!More

I frequented Angotei in the 1980's when it became my home away from home. Angotei has been the standard to which I have rated every other sushi bar I have attended in my travels. I have not had the fortune to dine at Angotei in...the past decade, I want to thank them for raising the bar for me and to leave a very fond memory of my experiences of the family and the best sushi i've ever had. i picked dates below simply to post this message. This was the first time I'd ever eaten at this restaurant. I was there for a business lunch. The place is very small and doesn't have a lot of atmosphere. But that's okay, not a big deal as far as that goes. However, the sushi...was a little disappointing in my opinion. It was good..., just not great. On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the best sushi I've ever had, I'd give this maybe a 6 or 7. I've had worse, but I've also had much better. This is 'sushi by the piece' kind of a place and is not 'all you can eat'. I felt that it was kind of pricey based on other places I've eaten which offered an all you can eat menu and have better sushi. All in all, I liked it, but didn't love it.More

The sushi here is wonderful, fairly old school. Service has been consistently gracious. Comfortable, friendly atmosphere, and I've been a regular. Until tonight. While downing the last bite of my meal I was suddenly asked by a new waitress (she practically barked at me) to...vacate my seat at the sushi bar because a group wanted to sit there. In mid-bite! Sorry, no longer my kind of place.More
