Authentic Hellenic Cretan dining experience!!! Not to be missed

ELEA was highly recommended by our New Zealand friends who had visited ELEA last year, for traditional Cretan cuisine and it really lived up to its reputation. They serve a lot of the produce from local farms and eagerly promote local ingredient. We tasted a baked egg dish with staka (butter cheese) with their freshly made warm sourdough bread!!!. We then followed by beef lwith freshly fired potatoes (prepared a filet of beef) and Cretan style rice with beef and lamb as our main dishes and they were truly some of the most delicious dishes we have ever sampled.The lovely lady owner and her kind assistants explained the dishes to us and made us feel right at home. We shall definetely go back again the next time we are in Rethymnon and Plakias..Needless to say that prices were amazing and the atmosphere created by the owners made it and all in all a memorable experience!

Super friendly service, delicious food, rustic tavern atmosphere, small, the daily menu is actually different every day (low season), and the desserts that are served with the bill are very delicious, we ate here 6 times out of 10 days. We always enjoy coming back. By the way... best raki in town!

Walking through Plakias we were struck by the cheerful and characteristic decor of the restaurant so after a morning in Preveli we decided to stop here for lunch. We ordered fried zucchini and grilled fish, all really divine, fresh and well cooked. The owner was very welcoming and kind. Superb dinner in this restaurant located on one of the streets perpendicular to the waterfront. The welcome is perfect, the staff is adorable and smiling, and really takes time with us despite the world. The service is fast despite a full restaurant. We ate a delicious moussaka and a dish of fried squirrels, and we feasted! Snacking as an aperitif and watermelon and raki are offered and it is appreciable. The atmosphere of the restaurant is very nice, small music in the background but not heady, in short a happiness! We will try to go back because it is frankly a beautiful discovery! We used this restaurant three times having discovered it towards the end of our holiday. Probably the best one we came across. Very good food, although to be fair, the standard in most restaurants was the same and very good. Red wine was also very good, as was the raki - the best in town. The service tended to set this above others - very friendly, helpful, chatty and amusing. We thought this was the owner, but he told us no, but was clearly the one running everything. Certainly made you want to go back.

We have never eaten so badly in Crete. The tzatziki was not seasoned. The fries with the chicken satay were very greasy. I ordered a mixed local fish dish. I got 3 same fish, so dry, tasteless... . The carrot salad mixed with red cabbage was not seasoned and no vinaigrette. Really not recommended, never again.

Just off the front at Plakias situated on one of the side roads this nice taverna stands out nicely decorated charming interior. Food and service very good home cooked and very reasonably priced. Seems popular with the locals on our visit. Certainly recommend going here thinking it’s less price than you would pay for the frontage tavernas here. Although we didn’t take a sweet course was offered Raki and some cake (nice).

We ate here nearly every night for our 15 night stay. Every meal we had was beautiful. Excellent service and very friendly staff. My favourites were definitely the sardines, lamb chops and Greek salad. High quality, reasonable prices in a great location.
