The food, as many a restaurants in the Simons Town area, was just average (deep gry, grilled and chips... ). The only positive is that it may be ok value for what you pay. To top it off the waitress laughed in my face when i left a 10 rand tip for a below 200 rand lunch and drink !! I know it was not 10% but who says you must leave a tip.. the service was average.. not exceptional.. all in all .. they rely on the tourists.. and not the locals to support them..

Can't get better in Simons Town

We were 4 adults and two kiddies. We visited Simonstown over the easter weekend. We decided on Salty dog, because we wanted to tread ourselves with good fish and chips . In short, the service was excellent, the food could not be better and reasonable priced I can recommend this restourant to any one.

In the always beautiful town, the first true Dutch residence, this small place on the Sea which only serves fried cod of 3 different types you can eat on the Sea with taste. Good frying and not too greasy

I am a local and used to finding good quality fish and chips places in Muizenberg and Kalk Bay. Salty Sea Dog in Simons Town is overpriced compared to many other fish and chips spots in the area, and the food was below average quality. You are better off going to the proper restaurant across from Salty Sea Dog - they are surprisingly more affordable on their fish and chips.

Repeated poor experience after years of enjoying the restaurant

This restaurant has really gone backwards. The food is still good (given that it is a basic "fish-and'chipper") but the atmosphere created by the staff is unacceptable. The staff are loud (with each other) to the point of being inconsiderate to customers and spend time listening to podcasts/videos on their phones at such volumes that indoor customers cannot have a sensible conversation. Totally spoils the experience. This has been the situation for our past 2 visits to the restaurant. Have been a regular for over 7 years now, but will possibly not go there again.

Horrendous wait

We were seated last night at a dirty table around 6:10pm. We were eventually served two simple plates of fish and chips well over an hour later. In that time we watched two tables of guests who had been waiting earlier than us, walk out in disgust without having eaten. This was bad enough but worse was that a group of 18 people entered the restaurant about 15 minutes into our wait. We watched them order and commented it was lucky we got our order in before them. 20 minutes after that their food began streaming out of the kitchen while we still waited. I complained and was told that the group had phoned their order in. We watched the whole group finish their meal while we STILL waited for ours! Yesterday was a public holiday and most of the other restaurants were closed so we had little other options. Bertha's opposite was open but they seemed to be packed with similar large groups It was clear that if you are an independent traveller you will be sacrificed in order to accommodate the big paying groups. Sad, because the fish and chips were excellent. This is clearly a management issue as the staff were excellent, doing their best to make up for the short fall in staffing levels. Independant travelers, unless you have hours to spare and are not starving hungry, beware and instead, try one of the smaller eateries behind the harbour front.

The service was very bad. They firstly took a dirty cloth which they picked up from the floor to clean our tables. We waited almost 2 hours for food which the first batch came and then after they have eaten than the others received their order. The seafood sauce was just tamato sauce and mayo mixed. The portions for the price is ridiculous. The russian roll was just a russian and a buttered roll. The food was cold and oily. we had to call the manager to revised our order cause the order was not complete. I had to give my food to my 4 year old cause they ddnt place the kiddies hake and chips order and told me they can't make it cause they close. The staff after we explained was so rude and unfriendly. The milkshake was spilled all over the waiters hand. My son was still eating then they took the plate, my husband went to asked what now then they wanted to give back the plate, mind you after placing other plates on top of it. Its the worst experience ever. I would never ever recommend this place for anyone not even my dog. 30 April 2023

Simple, yet delicious Fish & Chips

Salty Sea Dog is a classic Fish & Chips tent, right on the water's edge and far from a classy dining restaurant so curb your enthusiasm. Due to the fresh, delicious and fairly priced Fish & Chips the plance has build-up something of a cult following, also stretching to international shores due to countless recommendations in travel guides. Therefore numerous guests come with sky high expectations, hoping for something utterly unrealisitic for this price. Therefore do some research in advance and know, where you're heading, in this case, you won't be disappointed.

Excellent again

We visited from the UK in 2017 and enjoyed the fish so much, we came back. Today, the Hake was perfect but the chips we had initially were severely under cooked. However, on pointing this out to our exceptionally friendly server, he immediately said, no problem, I'll bring some fresh ones. When these arrived, they were perfect! Highly recommend this place for harbour side fish and chips; (they do sell other things too). But please can the cooking team note - you need to brown your chips each time, because when you do, they are perfect! There was also a duo playing tunes when we first arrived. They were excellent and just asked for a tip at the end, which we gladly gave.

Disappointing, gone downhill

Terrible lunch. Slow service - given a menu but then had to wait and wait. Place was almost empty. Staff chatting annoyingly loudly all the time. One of my pieces of grilled hake was hard and cold at the bottom - not fully defrosted or cooked. Not much taste in the fish or chips. When I mentioned the fish the waitress was disinterested, & then disappointed not to get a tip.

Calamari strips and chips the winner

We were told to come for the (super tender) calamari strips and chips, which were delicious. The 250g portion is very large - unless you’re very hungry or have a big appetite, I would suggest the 150g portion. My teenage son ordered the tentacles (it only comes as a 250g portion) as he thought they would be baby squid. They are basically big squid tentacles joined together, with the body cut off, batterer and deep fried. You need to cut them to try eat them but they are pretty tough. I would not recommend these - there were pretty bad and we ended up leaving the full plate. The tartar sauce (really just Mayo) comes in a very tiny plastic container, for which you’re charged R12. Service wasn’t very friendly but it’s not the kind of establishment you spend a while enjoying a leisurely meal. I think we will grab the takeaway calamari strips and chips next time we’re in town.

Wow, what friendly staff they have. Really felt welcome and great service. A pity the owner can not accommodate them by being innovating during Loadshedding. The waiters really tries their best and the small portion of food we had was delicious. Unfortunately lodshedding is a reality for all businesses in SA. Time to innovate

Amazing Fish

Incredibly surprised by the value for money here. HUGE portions of delisciois local and fresh food. My wife and I had it as takeaways for dinner and were pleasantly stuffed and satisfied. Let's be honest - it doesn't look like much from the outside and location may seem doubtful to tourists and locals. However, when entering the venue you are blessed and surprised with such unique interior design, amazing smells and such friendly staff. Despite the masks, you can see they are happy you are there. I had the snoek and chips. My wife had the kids Hake and chips - which was still such a huge portion despite it being a kids order. We were recommended this restaurant by locals (I say locals as we are from Johannesburg and the referral came from Cape Town friends). What an amazing take away from dinner on our honeymoon!

Disgusting kitchen

Uncooked calamari fell on the very dirty floor and the cook picked it started cooking. Very very bad service. Waited 20mins for menus and 30mins for 5 coke cans. Absolutely disgusting. Wish I saw it before we ate.
