Visited the Sea Gypsey for a lunch “to go” during Level 3 Lockdown. The Sea Gypsey are to be commended with their approach to maintaining distance and ensuring a high degree of sanitizing all and sundry. We opted for two of their Scampi baskets. These consisted of 4 mussels covered with a garlic white wine sauce, calamari, mushrooms, a couple of shrimps, dips and some of the best chips I’ve had in a while. We parked to the left of the Sea Gypsey overlooking the sea wall and a marvelous view of the bay, Diaz beach, the mountains, a stormy sea and and a cold front rolling in from the Cape. 2 x Scampi’s and 2 x Coke zeros came to a modest R210.00. A bargain for an amazing lunchtime snack which to be honest, we barely finished. Highly recommended.

Perfect seaside setting and ambiance with awesome view. Very friendly waiter. The gypsy combo was delicious- but beware of the price hike when you opt to swap hake for fish of the day! Disappointing coffee availability. Ice cream and chocolate sauce served on a side plate?? In these COVID times I was not comfortable with the plastic condiment bottles- they didn’t look clean.

We always aim to have a meal here when visiting Mossel Bay, but sadly we have experienced a drop in standards so the food no longer has the appeal it once had. Both meals that we ordered had chips which tasted of old oil... a very distintive taste, which seafood lovers like ourselves, recognise instantly. My "ladies hake" fillets were neither fresh, nor prepared correctly... unmistakably hauled out of the freezer and the batter wasn't fresh either. My husband's calamari was far from acceptable... he left most of the meal.
Such a pity, as the staff are friendly and the location great.

Absolutely the worst food I have had in South Africa. Dreadful.
SA restaurants have provided consistently high standars at sensible prices wherever we went. This is in a league of its own. I had a burger and chips. Burger well overcooked and chips undercooked served with a paltry salad garnish.
To put it in perspective, the chips are frozen crinkle cut rubbish served with a scattering of some tasteless red powder. Horrible.
My wife had a "ladies" fish and chips. Same vile chips, served with two tiny pieces of fish.
We complained and the owner told us the cooking was good! What an insult.
Given that we ate out about 20 times on this trip, believe this place is one to avoid.

We have been frequenting Sea Gypsey for many years so of course they were part of our itinerary when we visited Mossel Bay recently. The establishment still has it's charm given all the visitors writing their names etc all over the place. Regrettably, the food quality has severely decreased. We ordered starters of snails and mussels but were extremely dissapointed. Both these starters were covered in the same artificially thickened white sauce flavoured with processed garlic and nothing else. The mussels were so tiny and over cooked which is so sad seeing as they are in Mossel Bay and mussels are available of course. I will not say that I will never visit this restaurant again but next time, my visit will only include a few drinks and dinner will be had elsewhere.

We chanced upon this cafe as we were exploring the harbour area of Mossel Bay and it looked like a promising local food place. The menu offered sole 'if available', and we were told it was available so my husband ordered that assuming it would be fresh. We didn't even ask how they would cook it, assuming that a seafood restaurant would know what they were doing. When it arrived it was in beadcrumbs (I've never seen sole served like that before) and was so dry that was almost inedible. The accompanying chips were soggy. We expressed our disappointment and the manager sent our lovely waitress to offer us a free hi ice cream dessert which we accepted but that turned out to be pretty awful mush! Such a shame because the waitress was lovely and it was rather a nice setting. We are in Mossel Bay for several days and would love to have gone back there because of the ambiance, setting and friendly service. It is the only disappointing meal that we have had in the first 3 weeks of our South African holiday.

We had a meal here on the harbour in Mosel Bay. The ambience is rustic but the seafood is excellent and really fresh. You can even see them hoisting the oysters up in nets! We had prawns, calimari, hake & sole between us and all was of the highest standard. On top of this the price is unbelievable.

My husband and I were on a short visit to Mossel Bay. We wanted to have seafood and was directed to the harbour. We looked around and settled for the Sea Gypsy. The views were stunning and the waitress was very friendly and attended to us promptly. I ordered the line fish of the day and calamari combo. My husband ordered a seafood platter. My food was cold when it arrived so the waitress warmed it up. The line fish was yellow tail but it looked drenched in oil and batter. The fish looked old and dry when I cut into it. I took one bite wanted to puke. The fish tasted like dried fish, was rancid, stale with an offensive smell and inedible. A total misnomer for the line fish of the day! Unfit for any living being or thing to eat. Thankful I didn’t get sick from that one bite. I immediately took it off my plate to the side plate. The manager observed this and came to our table. He didn’t introduce himself. He just asked if there was a problem! I explained and also asked if this was yellow tail and he insisted it was. When asked if this was fresh he said it’s frozen stuff. I sarcastically said if he could eat it, I would. He was arrogant and said he doesn’t eat yellow tail! He asked to replace it with something else to which I said no. They only charged me for the calamari. Needless to say that this restaurant will never see me again! My husband later said to me that the prawns were smelly and old and he couldn’t eat it. We expected a whole lot more from a fish restaurant on the sea!

With the sun nearly down, we headed to the Quay and had a super view by the window overlooking the Bay. Good start. Despite being a Wednesday, there was a vibe around the SGC which should be bottled. Unpretentious surroundings, black felt tip autographs adorning every surface, excellent service and a choice of fish and meat at sensible prices, great value. Big boy here opted for a creamy muscle starter which was excellent, swiftly moving onto a fish basket of calamari, chips and battered hake. To top off, sorry I've forgot the name, begins with M but is very similar to Sticky Toffee Pudding back in the UK. Yum yum.
All washed down with a double G and T and bottle of local Sav.
Brilliant. I will be back, the main reason being I need to add my name to the furniture.
Yorkshire Lad woz ere 2023.

Our family has been coming to Mossel Bay for the last 25 years and the Sea Gypsy has always been our first choice of restaurants.
This is the second (and last) time that we have been really saddened by the reduction in quality of the food.
The chips were frozen and not properly cooked, the calamari was awful. The hake was beyond bad and inedible.
My daughter had a Greek salad and believe it or not that was inedible.
My grandkids had the Hunters Basket and they wouldn’t eat the wors or the beef strips.
No management in sight to complain to and no one asked what the problem was when they got the plates back full of food.
All in all the Sea Gypsy is to be avoided until they improve the quality of the food.

Lovely setting. Friendly staff. My seafood pasta was not what I asked for. Rather tell me the chef will not do as I ask than just give me a normal plate of pasta. I had weight loss surgery. I cannot eat a lot. So I asked 4 my pasta and sauce separate. I'll gladly pay full I just want the choice of adding the pasta myself. But don't tell me I told the chef but he sent this. I sent it back. Was not asked if I want something else to eat or any reply from anyone. The Scampi basket was extremely oily.

The view is lovely, and a nice casual atmosphere. Although my companions enjoyed their hake, calamari, and chips, I was extremely disappointed as I ordered hake espetada. My understanding of an espetada is solid pieces of protein on a skewer, with basting and seasoning. I wish I'd taken a photo as it's difficult to describe, it appeared to be bundles of hake offcuts, mainly skin and some gooey bits, and coated in thick batter and deep fried, I dug out a few bits of decent hake and left the rest. It really was one of the worst dishes I've ever been served. I seldom give reviews, especially negative ones, but I wish I had been warned.

We were at Sea Gypsy again today and the Gypsy never disappoints. I had 2 Oysters and my partner had the cheesy garlic snails for starters. The snail portion was so generous and delicious that he didn't order a main. The wine that I wanted was out of stock so they gave me a bottle of Pongratz for the same price as the wine!!!!! What a treat 😊
I ordered the Line Fish which was Butter Fish. To preserve this delicate fish's flavour they serve it grilled with lovely crispy chips. I would recommend ordering the lemon garlic butter as an extra. It made this dish a masterpiece of deliciousness.
Our waitress - sorry can't remember her name - was lovely. Friendly, efficient service.
If you are looking for a beautiful, rustic setting that offers scrumptious food and great service, Sea Gypsy is a winner.
Good job guys. We will be back 😊

Just wow! If TA would allow it, that would be my entire review. Setting, service, food, atmosphere... That is what this place is all about. It's not going to win any fine dining awards but it's not trying to.
We went for the rump espetado and it was fantastic, big enough to share and fun to eat. They don't "drizzle" anything over anything. Just fun and bold flavors, let your hair down and go and enjoy it
