Went for breakfast this morning. The food is really good but the service is terrible. Waited a long time for everything. When asking for the 2nd time for a Coke, was told “yes it’s coming” But the cherry on top was after ordering 3 cappuccino’s, 2 normal, 1 weak. My sisters cappuccinos arrived. They were finished drinking them when I got up to ask about mine. Was told “yes it’s coming”. But then the waiter came to the table to say the system shows I did in fact get it. The implication was that I was lying, goodness knows what they thought I did with the empty mug. Was told they will make me another one. I said don’t bother and left. Very disappointed

My family and I went to this coffee shop after an amble in the Modderfontein Nature Reserve. The day was sunny and warm for a day in winter. The Banting meal was sufficient for my father. However, the speciality was the gourmet burgers, which were impressive. The chili burger was not too hot. The breakfast wrap was also a delicious meal. I think it is a good idea to walk round the block to the museum to look around the grounds, after completing your meal.

Went there this past Sunday. The staff were running around like headless chickens, they did not know the menu at all. We had to point at the items just to order them. Even ordering an orange juice was almost impossible. Toasted sandwiches that state they come with chips did not come with chips. I said something to three of the employees but still never received the chips. Other tables got chips with theirs. I ordered an iced coffee- expecting like a freezo, no one asked for clarification, received an iced American which was revolting. For a place that claims to be a coffee shop, the espresso I had was disgusting. And when I did complain, I got the standard excuse of its busy. All the customers had issues as there was no one in charge to help with the pure chaos that was happening. I paid for everything in full. Didn't even get a discount on the toasted sandwiches that came with no chips.

Met a new friend there, and we had a wonderful time sitting outside. Wonderful atmosphere and surrounded with huge old trees. Like a gem in the middle of a huge busy city. Great coffee and food. We saw several dog owners walking their dogs get water for the dogs. Very relaxed and it felt like home away from home. Beautiful decor inside and don't miss the incredible colorful umbrellas on the ceiling of the bathroom.

I found Oakes by pure chance and I'm so glad I did. I taking an outing to Oakes at least once a month and sitting in the garden or on the veranda soaking up the sun and nature is pure bliss. This is probably not your hit and run kinda place but a "lekker kuier plek". The team at Oakes are always willing to ensure that they meet you expectations and given that our family is vegan they allow us to adapt their menu to suit our requests. I just love the fact they grow some of their own produce and it can't get fresher than that. Some of the menu offerings are truly homemade i.e. Pies and although I don't eat them my friend who joined me on the day, enjoyed the dish tremendously. Thank you Oakes Team

We visited Oakes Brew House after the modderfontein Parkrun. There is seating outside on larger benches or you can sit inside (it is quite small inside so it can get crowded). The menu is written on a chalkboard inside the cafe, and the menu is quite simple but caters for a variety of tastes. I had a black americano with caramel syrup, my husband had a cappuccino with vanilla syrup. For breakfast we both went with the banting special, with is half an avo, crispy diced bacon, cheese and 2 eggs. Food is tasty and the prices are affordable. There are also coffee beans available for purchase. Service is friendly, but it can get slow if there are many people. Will go back when I am in the area again.

It is one of the most amazing coffee shops I have ever been to with a really great menu and really good staff. Do not expect to have your food or coffee served to you within 30 seconds as this is not a fast food outlet so you will be waiting a few minutes for food or coffee however keep in mind that the venue itself is amazing and that the food is really great so you will get what you pay for. I think the idea here is to create some sort of a calmness and Serenity Amongst The Rat Race.

I always enjoy visiting the Oakes coffee shop for a brunch. Nice to sit out in the gardens, but the inside is nice and cosy too. One of the best bacon and egg sandwiches I've had. They sell their own coffee blends too, but I haven't been down that road. A simple, honest and warm spot to visit if you're in the area.

Enjoyed lunch under the oaks with some pleasant live music. It was a public holiday and the place was almost full. Initially service was great but it slowed a little. Food was very good. Large portions. I had a burger which I couldn't finish and rest of the family also enjoyed pizza (bubble bread) as they like to call it. Drinks service was good. Prices reasonable. Overall impression was definitely worth another visit.

Lovely setting under trees or under awning. Large variety to choose from, something for anybodies taste. Casual atmosphere and a good venue for functions. It is not my favourite restaurant but most people like it a lot.

Great venue under the trees with mostly outside seating and a few inside. Great pulled pork omelette, spinach feta tramezzini, French toast and delicious coffees but oh dear, people complaining all over the place. The service is exceptionally slow. If you have the time, it's really nice.

Pop in here a few times and no matter how busy parking area looks, they have always accomdated me and my family. They make amazing bubble breads and have easily the best Chicken Wings in Gauteng! No comparison at all. The honey chilli sauce goes well with the wings!

Having completed the Modderfontein Parkrun, a group of us descended on Oakes for post Parkrun Coffee. We chose to partake in one of their breakfasts and were delighted to report that it was one of the tastiest Banting Breakfast's we had ever eaten! Highly recommended, and the cappachino's were also worth a mention!

If you need a country, old town escape in the middle of Johannesburg you need to go to Oakes brewery! This spot is in the middle of old town Modderfontein and offers seating around one of the old houses. The Frans Hoenig house is open on some weekends with a farmers market and is great for a relaxed morning stroll. Pick a spot under some trees, order food inside the house with the menu written on the wall behind the coffee counter and enjoy. They are also pet friendly, bring your dog and order personalised doggie treats!!!
