WE booked this restaurant without much local knowledge. What a find. Not only were the surroundings extremely beautiful but the restaurant itself offered incredibly good food and outstanding wine at a very good price. We left feeling that we had eaten well, been served by very attentive staff and not paid an arm and a leg for very good food and wine.

After a long period without going out (Covid) We ventured out to our favourite spot for a romantic lunch at Mont Marie. Even though we could not sit on the deck because of a drizzle, the helpful staff quickly made a plan. All guests were accommodated within the cellar in between the wooden barrels. This created a perfect unique atmosphere and experience. As always the food was delicious at a very reasonable R495 per person for a full course meal on Valentines day

5 of us (3 hungry university students included) went for lunch yesterday (Sun, 9/02/2020). Our arrival at Mont Marie was warm and inviting. We were shown to our table outside on the terrace with views of the mountains and dam. We were looked after by Nicky, who despite having many tables to attend to, made us feel that nothing was too much trouble and her service was outstanding. The menu was varied but the special of ribs and chicken wings were what our hungry varsity students chose... The portions were so generous that Nicky armed each student with their own doggie bag to take home with them. The fillet steak was perfection.. and my caesar salad sublime. The ambiance and view made our Sunday experience at Mont Marie memorable and definitely worth coming back for more. Stunning wholesome food... and a staff that made sure that our experience was first class. Thank you...

After visiting 5 years ago and not having the best experience, wanting to give this very attractive place another chance after reading the positive reviews, we made a booking online for 2.30, we arrived and having a choice of tables sayt down and given menus with the waiter saying the kitchen closes in 30 minutes? Not a good start, however we hurriedly choose our meal only to be asked for dessert choices? We picked one. Wine served were the largest poured from the bottle we ordered, no ice offered and it was a seriously got day. The fish of the day, sole was confirmed as fresh not frozen but was was served as a watery mass no flavour at all, when the waitress collected the plates and asked if everything was ok and we mentioned the tasteless fish she said it was the size? And she would tell the chef? We had dessert while staff cleared tables, put umbrellas down and clearly wanted us to leave asap. We got the bill and paid only to realize after that we were overcharged for the awful fish dish that was not eaten as the price had gone up but they had not increased price on menu they had given us, so we overpaid , chef not interested in our comments about fish and rushed through, we were done within the hour ...why take a booking for 2.30 if they don't have time? Maybe it's ok for tourist who won't come back Such a shame as we really liked the the location, but lots of other places around Dornier, Cavalli, Guardian peak, overture, Somerbosch, longridge ,louisvale, close malverne, Avonture to name a few will not be returning, shame as no one really cared

We had lunch at Mont Marie this afternoon, on a beautiful sunny day in Stellenbosch. Given the setting you might think nothing could go wrong. The staff: Though the restaurant was far from full the service was so slow we repeatedly had to intercept a waiter to get any service at all. When service finally arrived it was from a waiter who actually made side comments about us, like “pappa is impatient I see”. I can’t recall when last I’ve seen such unprofessional service. Glasses were taken away before they were empty, wine cooler was put next to kids and the waiter seemed annoyed, stating he is isn’t sure when asked about the menu. The food: the chicken liver starter was a jumble of mismatched ingredients. With the fried hake and chips, the hake is smothered in such a thick layer of half cooked batter that we were left picking out bits of fish from the middle. The chips were pre-cut and tasted like McDonald’s. The cheese on the pizza tasted off and the base was excessively sprinkled with something like semolina which gave it a unpleasant texture. The rice from the poke bowl was soggy, although the rest of the ingredients were fine. Coffee was good. In all, a thoroughly disconcerting experience and certainly very different from the other reviews.

Every time our families go to Mont Marie it feels like home BUT luxurious and glamorous. Every single staff member is friendly, knowledgeable and so welcoming. You can see by the attention to detail and how the restaurant is run that the owners have a heavy hand to play. We often arrive early and stay until sunset while sipping on wine, dining delicious food, watching others celebrate great milestones, or seeing families with kids at play, while never wanting for a thing. We consistently see the chef on the floor, monitoring his creations and touching base with his customers and this always makes us feel so special & privileged. We also love the new wooden deck area, gives the space such a great new feel. Never disappointed.

Tried calling several times to book a table for breakfast. There was no answer and was not going to leave a message. Got there and the first thing we were asked if we have a reservation? I said no and we treated like an outcast from hell. although the restaurant was empty.... Rather go to a place with a friendly reception, someone that will make you feel welcome spending your money, they have no reason being snobbish... WILL NEVER GO BACK

Feeling nervous and awkward about finally mustering up the confidence to go out and visit restaurants again after this terrible pandemic, Mont Marie has certainly gone the extra mile to make us all feel safe and welcome again. Together with the season change, there was a lot of new things to look forward to at this perfectly situated establishment. The menu has a great new variety of dishes, such as the bowl items, and the focus is more on sustainability and seasonal produce. The outside deck area overlooking the lake is getting a make over as well! As seen in the photo, the deck is being extended around the building, creating more space and safe social distance for all patrons to enjoy. Summertime is by far the added silver lining to this gem tucked in between the mountains of Stellenbosch. The outside area is peaceful and it very clear that the staff members have all undergone thorough training with regards to safety and regulations required to adhere to all necessary Covid-19 standards. We were served by Nikki, a very friendly lady with a bubbly personality and later Raymond gave us the run down of the farm's viticulture practices with an intimate wine tasting, filled with interesting facts and tasting notes. Mont Marie is definitely on recommended by my whole family, especially because we felt that we were in great hands of people putting in extra effort in order to keep their customers happy and safe. The food is vibrant and very tasty, and as far as the views go, I'd doubt you'd find any better. Cannot wait to see all the new changes being completed! We will definitely be back for more.

We are spoilt in Stellenbosch but there are few places, if any, that have a better location. Absolutely beautiful setting coupled with incredible food and great staff. The head chef / owner always takes time in ensuring you have a memorable experience and that you leave craving your next visit. It is a must!

On a rainy 14th of February morning, the staff at Mont Marie had to think on their feet quickly and came up with a great solution. ... Sosial distancing and all the rest in place. It was a delicious set menu and there was something special for everyones' taste. A beautifully presented and tasteful lunch was enjoyed by all. Preparing a meal as such for so many people takes some doing and some very special skills. The ambiance was warm and friendly with live piano music. We would like to commend the staff who was eager to be at our beck and call with a great sense of humour. All in all a truly lovely experience!

Went to Mont Marie on Sunday for lunch, it was the second time visiting the restaurant. We were blown away(even more than the first time) with the food, every mail was presented in a contemporary way bursting with flavour. Even though the restaurant was relatively full the service was great, so much attention paid to the small details. The new deck has made the venue Covid friendly with more than enough space between tables. I can not recommend Mont Marie enough! Great great great...

What better than lunch on the terrace of Mont Marie last weekend. The weather took a break and we feasted on the sunshine while we nibbled on the delicious snacks while we had a look at the interesting and innovative menu. Service was good and it was comforting to know that all the waiters had been vaccinated for COVID. The food was tasty, the portions were generous and the view ….. water and mountains. Quite breathtaking. Mont Marie is really special in that the COVID protocols are strictly adhered to, sanitiser on the tables and well spaced seating. What a pleasure.

On 8th of May ,my friends booked the Restaurant for my birthday celebration. I'm disgusted and disappointed as I'm writing this review. Never ever in my life I've been shouted at and heard a waiter swearing at customers. His name is Celester. From the start, he didn't give us a warm welcome,he was not friendly at all.The argument started when we asked him to move us to go sit inside because one of my friends was feeling cold outside. He said he can give her a blanket and one of my friends answered him and said no we don't want a blanket, we would like to move to an inside table as we initially booked an inside table. Then he was back chatting and he went on about customers not appreciating him offering a blanket and so on.Then it was an argument between the two. We then asked him to get us another waiter for us and another guy came and moved us to an inside seating. He was going on still this Celester guy, swearing at us. That's when we were now all pissed off at his behavior. We then asked this new waiter to please get us the restaurant manager to come attend to this matter as this guy was blatantly insulting and disrespecting us. He claimed he was the manager and we can speak to him and asked us to calm down but was not admiting that his waiter was wrong. A lady who brought the food apologized and ask us to sit as we were about to walk out and leave the restaurant. But as expected some of us had lost appetite. We then called the number on the website and asked for someone else in charge to come address this Celester guy issue, a lady who answered the phone also claimed she was the manager. But eventually a white guy came to our table who then told us he was the restaurant owner. We told him our the problem we had with his staff but he also sided with them and told us that they are his best employees and this was the first time a waiter was rude and sweared at customers. We insisted he get Celester to apologize himself to us but he couldn't get him to do that,he also started fuming and claimed we just wanted to fight him and told us to do whatever ever we wanted. He doesn't care, we can go ahead and write them a bad review if that's we wanted to do. That's exactly what I'm doing now. Its sad that customers are not treated the same at Mont Marie basically they guy was telling us to get lost and never set foot at his establishment. And thanks to him and his team for ruining my birthday celebration 😠.

My wife and I have been at Mont Marie before. We always have high expectations but with our last visit on Sunday we were simply blown away. There is a lot of thought behind the locally inspired cuisine, yet the love and care in the staff interactions were noteworthy. The hard work behind the scenes and back of house is inspiring in these times.

It is rare and exceptional that one comes across staff that are so consummately attuned to ones needs. Our waitron, Christian and the sommelier, Raymond, provided top class service. Coupled with the great food and awesome views, this was truly a great way to enjoy a Sunday lunch. My husband and I eat out on a very regular basis and can honestly say that this was one of the most memorable lunches we have experienced in recent times. Well done to Pieter Vlok for the great food and for providing us with such a great experience. We will definitely be back with some good friends.
