All reviews chicken pie bobotie pizza oxtail rack of lamb traditional food parking area south african dishes dinner with friends lovely evening wine list service was excellent great setting cooked to perfection set menu western cape main course
This was the perfect setting for our anniversary dinner. Exceptional, friendly and professional service. Exquisite food and atmosphere.
I will definitely recommend their steak and lamb dishes.
The restaurant has a beautiful architecture.
Volkskombuis has always been known for their traditional dishes. Meraai se pie (chicken pie), bobotie and oxtail. Neither of these are on the menu anymore. Very limited choice. The setting and service is great but the food and desserts average.
Went to volkskombuis for my birthday and invited friends. Did complain on their website on the 19th of September after the dinner as i did not want to complain the evening:. "Had lovely dinner at your new restaurant on Friday evening having been at the...old Volkskombuis many times in the past. Great ambience and Annemarie was a great waiter. But the baby tomatoes in the side salad was not fresh. And then Meraai se hoenderpaai - this is not the real one - the original version had flaky pastry and a good filling. I got a potpie version - no problem with this - but there was just pastry and more pastry (not all cooked properly) and if there was a spoonful of filling, it was much! A real disappointment!!! Please either change your recipe on this one, or change the name!" Got a response that they will respond - well no response after 3 weeks. Phoned and left message - no response! So guess what - this restaurant will not see me again - luckily we are spoilt for choice in the Winelands.More
Last night it was good, but tonight they had large group booking and as a result the food was very disappointing. The rump steak was pre-cooked, refrigerated and then microwaved. As a result it tasted like it was rubberized. I returned it, and even their...2nd attempt was still cold, (pre)overcooked and unfortunately I will not be returning (after multiple previous excellent experiences).More
Enjoyed a very pleasant lunch, dishes well prepared and menu a nice mix of traditional food, mixed with more modern choices. Good wine list , quite well priced. Service is very quick and attentive. Beautiful shady terrace and plentiful off street parking.
We were regulars at the "old Kombuis" and enjoyed it. The menu was traditional and good. So why not give the New Establishment a try. We did on Thursday 27th February 2020.
The new restaurant is excellent, as far as decor and layout - well...done to the designers. No loud music - which made conversation a pleasure. The menu was disappointing - only two real traditional offerings and one, the Tomato Bredie, which I had was very disappointing. The Chefs have totally missed the taste and flavour of this delicacy. What they offered up was a 'bash and smash' version of a great South African dish and no amount of excuses could make up for this sloppy mess. What, we ask ourselves, would the Babotie have been like.......
The rest of our party, 7 in all, had varying offerings from the menu. Nothing shone out as being excellent or even noteworthy. Even the calamari drew some lifted eyebrows. General consensus was average. Where were the traditional "tasters" platters - very sadly missed from the menu, and such a popular choice for our foreign visitors. I understand this was the Chef's decision.
The staff and service was up to scratch and there was an allure of professionalism about their attention to us as customers. There was a good offering of wines and the water was well chilled and regularly topped up. No one ventured into the final offerings, which all shouted as being boring and unimaginative. The closing coffees did raise our spirits - on an evening of good banter and company but disappointing cuisine.
There is plenty of parking and the chaps directing the parking area are friendly and helpful.More
What a great Restaurant. The food was tasty and the service very good. The menu has a lot of traditional cuisine on offer. The Restaurant is very stylish with a great ambiance. Unfortunarely there is always one bill per table.
This seemed to be closed forever but has now been refurbished. The old favourites are still on the menu -- chicken pie, rack of lamb. Great service. We sat outside in the shade, on the bank of the stream
