All reviews salad burger hake bread pork belly cafe gourmand wine by the glass will definately be back front of house cheese tasting wonderful meal the main road fantastic food craft beer faces chips shannon
After a funeral we gathered for something light to eat and drink. Great food and love the hospitality. Nice place to shop as well - cheese/wine and breads.
Just very very hot in there. But then again, it is Paarl!
We took a drive out to Paarl this weekend so we could try something different. We tried Backs restaurant on the main drag.
It's a cheerful place with both indoor and outdoor seating, serving casual bistro food with a heavy emphasis on cheeses from Fairview....SALADE DE CHÈVRE CHAUD R95 - my choice
Unfortunately the salad did not have the butternut roasted but rather tasteless cubes of butternut and ultimately the entire salad lacked flavour
SLOW COOKED LAMB R85
Jeff's choice. The open pulled lamb sandwich was reasonable, although the presentation was terrible.
We did glimpse the burgers and they looked outstanding!
Seeing the rest of the food coming out of the kitchen there is a heavy reliance on cheese providing the flavour for the dishes and while this may work on a burger, it leaves a lot to be desired in a salad.
We did mention the butternut and they did attend to it immediately without us asking them to. So 10/10 for service and listening to your clientele! Their staff were cheerful and attentive!
The setting is charming and the prices are extremely reasonable.
THE BLOOMING ONION R55
A huge onion deep-fried in a CBC beer batter with
our secret dipping sauce
This is their secret weapon and it's worth going there just to have the onion, delicious.More
We went there for breakfast and coffee after a run. Our waitress, Sandra was so lovely and really made the place enjoyable. The coffee was also amazing and came in decent sized cups which is hard to find. Definitely a treasure in Paarl.
Such a lovely place hidden in the main road of Paarl. Food was really amazing, it is so seldom that food doesn't need extra spice. Even the sausage was great.
They have a beautiful little shop, well stocked. The smell of freshly baked bread. Brewery...coffee made me feel hungry
Definitely worth a tripMore
If you are looking for a great spot to grab breakfast in Paarl, then Back's is the place to go. The restaurant has both indoor as well as outdoor seating. We sat inside as it was a chilly morning but for a sunny day, sitting...outside under the trees would be nice. Our waitress was very friendly and as it was loadshedding (no power available during certain periods) she advised us to quickly order coffee, but that the food isn't an issue so we could still peruse the menu for a bit. The restaurant has such a relaxing atmosphere and the coffee was delicious. For breakfast I had their full breakfast and my wife went for their eggs benedict, which was presented beautifully in a frying pan which just adds to the style of the restaurant. They also have a shop at the restaurant that sells freshly baked breads and assorted items if you want to take some of what they have to offer home. We had a great time, felt refreshed and ready for the day, and I have heard good things about their other dishes so will definitely be back there for lunch or dinner in the future.More
What a pity. What a disaster. Backs, and the former Juno, was an asset to Paarl. They had great atmosphere, they were popular, the service was great, and, living close by, we would often walk there when we didn't feel like cooking. The service is...still great - and I have to and want to salute the service staff for that. The rest - no, don't go. I do feel bad in saying this because it would have an impact on the wonderful serving staff. Whoever is running it currently, is running it into the ground. The chef Thabo, that took over a few months ago, is apparently there no longer. Thabo was the chef at Terra Mare, the no 1 restaurant in Paarl for many years. He KNOWS what he is doing. This is probably mistake number 1. A friend and I ate at Backs on the 14th of Feb - both our meals were nearly inedible. Whoever was in the kitchen that night I don't know; we didn't complain (my mistake) because we were chatting so nicely. I returned a few weeks later. My beetroot pizza had no or hardly any of the Fairview cheese stated on the menu, the crust was hard and it was a very unsatisfying meal, to say the least. It used to be one of my fave dishes; I ate here often. My husband's dish was also not close to what it was before. How on earth do you get a very successful establishment (admittedly it has had its ups and downs) to get to this level of experience!? The only plus of Backs at the moment is their waiters and the front-of-house.More
From the moment we walked in we were greeted with big welcoming smiles. The food was exceptional. My husband had the pulled pork burger and I had the pork belly. For desert I had the cafe gourmand. That trio of sweet treats hit all the...correct spots. Everything from start to finish was perfection. Will definitely be returning soon.More
