About
De Kombuys is an organically orientated wine and Wagyu farm. The Marbled Wagyu Restaurant is one of only a handful of restaurants in the Southern hemisphere where you can experience real pasture raised Wagyu, our signature trade. The 150-year-old Cape Dutch farm store has been conservatively renovated to house this unique Wagyu specialty restaurant & deli. chef Jay is serious about his farm-to-table philosophy and the menu is often adapted to reflect seasonal availability of produce. The menu is centered around our superior quality, well marbled wagyu. Please note: Dinner by RESERVATION ONLY.

We booked 2 nights in this gorgeous place, but after our arrival we extended our stay one night and then again another night, we could have extended our stay indefinitely if we have the time and money.
The place is so peaceful and beautiful overlooking a valley and shrub covered mountains.
While you enjoy your meal, drinks ,coffee or just relaxing, your eyes will fall in love with scenes of birds, Wagyu castles, vineyards, mountains and valleys with the the only sounds of birds or the estate staff laughs.
The rooms and villas design , decorations and fittings are done in great details and taste,
Hats off to the owners, Manina and captain Martin.
The restaurant is greatly designed and fits well with the the environment, well done.
The food menu is not long, but great and should be tried all as we did, almost.
Do not miss the Wagyu grilled steak, nor the gourmet burger, nor the cheese with dried meat platter ,Lee one of the most polite waiter I ever met, said it's enough for two, but I think easily 4,
The chief JJ was so wonderful, he even volunteered to make a couscous dish for us , though not on the menu, and went to the trouble to buy chicken to make us grilled chicken. Wow, where do you find such attitude and service. thank you JJ, Lee, Brad, We new chief Zack and ofcourse to Lovely family, Manina and Captain Martin.
We would love to come back to this most beautiful place and family.
If I may offer some recommendations to add to its beauty,
In the accommodation, if window screens can be added without distorting the views, it will help keep some flys at bay to enjoy the sleep,
And in the restaurant, although the food is organic and so tasty, for some people like me I like more charcoal grilling and less oil frying .
But guys, keep it up.
Thank you so much again,
Nora & Saud

Hi Dearest Nora & Saud,
Thank you for taking the time to write such a lovely flattering review. We all so so loved hosting you. You guys are really special people and when you left everyone was a little sad.
Thank you also for your suggestions. They are all very valid and much appreciated. I am sure Chef Jay will also appreciate your restaurant suggestions. We will be renovating in May and will be paying a lot of attention to improving the villas even further.
We are sure you are enjoying the rest of your trip and we are really looking forward to hosting you again in the future.

Excellent food, all 4 of us had the Wagu steaks, cattle reared on the estate and we stayed overnight in two of their cottages. The service was excellent and when we ran out of time at breakfast as we’d booked the Cango caves tour for 9am our host told us to come back after it and they would serve us again which was a lovely gesture and we were able to take our time later, before leaving for Plettenberg. Would highly recommend eating and staying here.

De Kombuys is a truly special place at the foot of the Swartberg pass. Everything is very eco friendly. The little cottages are a delight - from an outdoor bath under the stars romanticised with candles and wonderful bath treats to your own refreshing plunge pool which can be heated for an evening dip! A chilled bottle of their De Kombuys Chardonnay together with Nespresso coffee & other delicious treats awaited us. Dinner was a sensational experience & taste sensation. Martin told us all about breeding Wagyu beef which was so interesting. Their attention to detail, quality of staff and friendly efficient service is highly recommended! A delicious breakfast with their farm before we left to continue our journey completed this fabulous experience! We will be back!!

I have very few positive things to say about our visit tonight. We spent a ridiculous amount of money (especially in comparison to the other places we’ve been in this area) on the insignificant amount of steak that some how managed to be almost impressively, both raw and burn’t! We were already displeased with the wait of over an hour for the ONE course we had ordered.. with a patronising waiter who was under the assumption he knew how we should prefer our meal.
To add to it the menu was incomprehensible and told us nothing about what we were ordering, needing it’s contents to be explained.
After we had politely complained about our meal to our waiter we did not receive a discount of any kind or even a meaningful apology for our bad experience here. It is safe to say we will not be returning and would advise that people do not stop to visit.

Hi Karen,
Thank you for taking the time to write a review.
Your food order docket shows your meal was out long before an hour. The waiter you are referring to is arguably the friendliest staff member we have.
Where you are in fact correct, is when you ask for a Wagyu Prime steak well done (as you did), you are most definitely wasting your money because you are destroying everything that makes wagyu so special- the marbling. I believe the waiter's supposed 'assumption of how you would prefer your meal', would have been him trying to explain to you that our very well trained chef knows exactly how to prepare wagyu and what you were requesting was wagyu steak suicide.
I also am quite saddened that you felt the need to be so vindictive to write 3 reviews about the one dinner. That is definitely not what Tripadvisor is all about, nor what makes it such a great, informative platform.
I am unable to refund you for destroying a wagyu steak, but I do welcome you back, free of charge, to come experience our wagyu the way it should be prepared.
You are welcome to contact us directly to book a table.
Regards,
Manina

I'll start with the positive. The location is breathtaking! Reminds me of my days as an apprentice chef at a small Auberge in the south of France. The restaurant interior is cosy and rustic, we had a table right in front of the fireplace. Our kids did like their Mac n Cheese. The wine was good. Our server Brad was incredible and we had a great conversation with him after our meal.
The negative. My wife ordered the F1 rare and I ordered the Prime medium rare. They both came out looking identical. My wife's was definitely not rare and mine was little more done than medium rare. The presentation was ok. But what was really disappointing was the steak itself. I've been fortunate to have eaten Kobe Wagyu and American Wagyu on multiple occasions and the Wagyu I ate here does not even come close. My steak was actually tough and the flavor was underwhelming. I asked to see a raw steak to make sure it was actually Wagyu. The chef came out to explain that the herd was young and that the meat would get more tender as the herd matures.
Overall hugely disappointing steaks.

Hi Anton,
After reading your review I have to wonder if 2020 has passed you by. Being a chef yourself, one would think you have some sympathy with the terrible struggle the South African hospitality industry has been through with Covid19. We are currently still in Level 1 lockdown and the industry remains under tremendous strain while we wait for international tourists to return. Thousands of people have been left unemployed and countless restaurants have had to close their doors for good.
I am gobsmacked that you think it is an appropriate time for negativity and criticism. You should be supporting your local restaurants and commending them for their perseverance and courage to reopen. I would advise the self proclaimed food critic in you it keep itself under wraps a little while longer and give the restaurant industry the chance to get back on it’s feet. Please let the playing field level and allow us to reach our ‘new normal’ before you take a swing at another South African restaurant.
Regards,
Manina

Having read the reviews, we were really looking forward to eating here. I am very sorry to say that it did not live up to our expectations. We had travelled through South Africa for several weeks and had eaten well, we assumed that the steak would be worth the relatively astronomical price.
It was cooked medium rare as requested, however it was tasteless, tiny and took rather a long time to make it's apprearance.
We left feeling ripped off, which was a shame. I rarely leave a one star review but sadly feel that this restaurant deserves it.
I don't recommend it.

I drove on a solo mission, especially from Cape Town to Oudtshoorn for the burger special. The most phenomenal Wagyu burgers I have ever had. I had them in Mossel Bay about a month ago and couldn’t wait to have them again.
The beautiful scenery, the warm and cozy farmhouse dating back to the 1800’s, a fire and my favourite, a glass of their De Kombuys 2016 Shiraz in hand, I happily made my way through 2…yes…2 Wagyu burgers and gorgeous roast potatoes, all while being kept company by the sweetest hound, resident Ridgeback Seemeeu.
Perfectly cooked juicy Wagyu patty, Camembert, wasabi mash, arancini, pecans, kimchi and pomegranate jewels, a better combo I’ve yet to find. You know when you drive 5hrs for a burger you are in for something special.
Lee, the manager, is unbelievably knowledgeable and educated me on their gorgeous wines (a few bottles of which I took home with me). The service is excellent, attentive yet not obtrusive, stunning views and just an all-round wonderful experience. If you haven’t yet been, do yourself a favour!
I will always return! Thank you for a wonderful meal.

We had the pleasure of having lunch at de Kombuys a couple of weeks ago....they had unfortunately run out of steaks but everything else we ordered was fantastic! The burger was absolutely spectacular as was the look of the restaurant, the service and the very friendly manageress/owner. Their unwooded chardonnay is fantastic and we really look forward to going back to Oudtshoorn and visit this fine establishment and hopefully get the oppertunity to try their prima Wagu steqk

If we could give 6 stars, we would!
On holiday with 2 small children, and always keen on Waygu, we also needed to time lunch with a conference call. Having popped in the day before and bought some charcuterie, Manina told us about the 2 for 1 Thursday burger special. We were so pleasantly surprised with boxes of toys, colouring in goodies and a picnic blanket being brought out for the kids. Aside from the service, where nothing was too much, the burgers were out of this world! Organic methods of farming are used and such consideration for "farm to table".
The wine was excellent too. I was also given a quiet lounge for my conference call.
The kids were also taken to the to see the new calf.
What a pleasure of a place, with excellent food and service. Thank you Manina and team.

After reading some mixed reviews, we decided to venture out of Oudtshoorn for breakfast and was thoroughly rewarded! What a stunning location, fantastic food and coffee. The host brought our 13 month old toys to entertain him and allow us to enjoy our breakfast. Will definitely visit again!

Service was marvellous, very friendly waiter, absolutely divine wine and food too! We took the platter to start with (we shared it): it was abundant, varied and prepared with much love. Waiter explained to us all the various delicacies and the relishes. Then we took the burger, which was very different and extremely delicious. I do like my meat very rare and it was cooked to perfection. Husband likes his meat well done, which was done (unfortunately but so is his taste!). It is a truly special place, with stunning views and it is certainly worth the trip from Oudtshoorn!

We booked this accommodation because of stunning pictures and write-ups all of which is totally misleading. This may be the reason why the manager immediately upgraded us from the chalet to the "villa" . The chalet was almost uninhabitable with a too small bed and a disgusting, small bathroom with damp marks on the walls, no utensils or pots or microwave as advertised. The "villa" was an improvement but with many flaws: the splash pool was just an open unfilled hole. It had no dressing table with plugs, the small patio is dangerous with no handrail protection, the kitchen bar stools are rickety and uncomfortable. The breakfast was lovely and the staff friendly, but although we were warmly dressed, the converted shed was so cold as to be almost unbearable. This establishment is not for elderly people due to the rough paths and low, uncomfortable furniture. The path next to the dam also had abandoned edge shutters just lying there. We did not try out the restaurant with its ridiculous prices.
In other words, this place is all pretence with no substance.

We overnighted on this special farm in the Swartberg mountains. Arina welcomed us hospitably at restaurant and was ready to serve us with a smile. From the deli we bought estate wine and some Wagyu sausage / ‘wors’ to braai at night. The next morning we savoured our breakfast: the menu is perfect and concise. We shared a trio of starters and then each enjoyed a gourmet breakfast – superbly executed by the chef. Attractive presentation, generous portions sizes flavourful taste. The infused butter and home-made preserves were a treat! The service was polite, professional and prompt. The whole experience exceeded our expectations. The décor is an eclectic mix of classic and Klein-Karoo. Ideal for a memorable meal.
