Jemima‘s restaurant is a cute restaurant and we had a lovely waitress. The pre course was quite good but not that cheap. The main course (fillet with chips) was disappointing ... We ordered medium rare and got completly done after we told the waitress we got a new and good one. The chips were not really good and the sauces „okay“. At least the dessert (Granny apple tarte tartin) was very good. However the food was overall mediocre but way too expensive for what it is and in my opinion a fillet for 220-300Rand should not be well done when you‘re ordering medium rare ...

On the first day we could legally have a glass of wine again in a restaurant we decided that Jemima's would be the best place to celebrate just that! The atmosphere was cosy and most of the tables were filled. Our waitress was fully attentive and knowledgeable about the menu and the wines on offer. My husband had ostrich fillet which he said was the best he'd ever had and I had a vegetarian option which was just delicious. Looking forward to being back at Jemina's for another fantastic meal!

I’ll start off with the only negative thing I have to say about Jemimas : I’d not been there before December 2020. (That’s it) How could it have taken me so long to give it a bash? My loss though, which I looked to make up for on the 8 days I spent in town (I grew up in Oudtshoorn and knew of Jemimas, yet somehow managed to overlook it on every subsequent visit the past 15 years... Now the positive: It started with a quick breakfast with the family, which was perfectly delicious. This lead to a follow on visit the next day for lunch, and then the next and twice more thereafter. Every time I tried a different item in the menu - the different pasta options, the burger, the tapas and an omelette. Every meal was delicious and I grew confident in the fact that my subsequent meals would follow suit. The wine menu was truly refreshing too with old favourites, while the wine rack had exceptional gems that were almost too attractively priced. Then there’s the personal touches of Pierre and Debbie - thank you a thousand times; I decided to bring my entire family for a celebratory lunch on my last day in town and all 40-something of us were treated to a truly memorable feast with personal oversight from Pierre and excellent service from his team. They truly went above and beyond anything expected, and have won over my loyalty and support going forward. Thanks to Pierre and the Jemimas experience, Oudtshoorn has become a holiday destination I look forward to, and not just the town I grew up in.

Thoroughly disappointed. The last time we dined at Jemima's was some 15 odd years ago and it has always been in my mind as one of the best meals I have ever had in South Africa. Not this time around, I am afraid. We made a booking via e-mail for 8pm on a Saturday evening. The booking was confirmed and not once was mentioned, that the kitchen actually closes at 8pm. We arrived about 10 minutes late and received the most unwelcoming reception by the staff, even when we mentioned that we had a booking. We actually had to pull up the e-mail as proof that we had a booking. It was fairly obvious that the staff was ready to close up, even though there was still a large table enjoying some after dinner drinks. Reluctantly, we were seated, but not before mentioning about 3 times that the "kitchen is actually closed". It seemed that they were doing us a huge favour. The whole place looked more like a furniture storage unit than a "fine dining" restaurant. Not inviting in the least. At that point we should have actually left, but we were still hopeful that the food would make up for everything else (and we were hungry!). Wrong. The menu was small and uninspiring, the food portions tiny and the presentation of the food was not inviting at all. And the taste? It was ok, nothing to write home about. I even made a comment to the waiter, that the portions are quite small so we might order dessert, to which we were once again reminded that the kitchen is closed. Eventually they did reluctantly serve us dessert. The best thing about the whole evening was the ice cream that came with the dessert. It seems that other people had a better experience, so perhaps we were just unlucky. The point is though, if a guest makes a booking and the booking is confirmed, I have to honour it and still offer the same level of service and food quality. The fact that someone on the team confirmed the booking, even though they should not have, is not the guests fault. I have a feeling that the chef had already left and someone else was preparing the food.

We booked this restaurant after reading all the fabulous reviews on trip advisor and we where so looking forward to the visit. We arrived at the restaurant in Dec 2021 to be told that most of the restaurant was booked out for a local function . We were told that if we wanted wine the wine list was on a board where the function was on but we could not go in there so the manger would go into the room where the wine was stored and pick us a couple of bottles that we could choose from. We asked the manager for a Shiraz she came back with only one choice and told us that was all they had available in Shiraz and gave us no other choice or option. We have had some fabulous meals on our trip around the Western Cape but sadly this wasn’t one of them. It was ok but that’s about all. We ordered our meal with starters and dinner and side vegetables our Vegetables only arrived at our table after our meal was finished and after calling the waitress to ask were they were earlier. The manager did not come to the table to see if she could have sorted out the problem she totally ignored us and walked out to the front of the restaurant ( totally unprofessional). We called for our bill to the table and the waitress said she needed to get the manager to take the vegetables off the bill as we hadn’t had them. When we finally got our bill we where charged 350 rand for a very middle of the road bottle of Shiraz probably our fault as we should have asked the price but during all our visits to South Africa this was certainly the most expensive mediocre bottle of wine we have ever had at a meal. I think they added the cost of the veg on to the cost of the wine also. We were all so looking forward to eating at Jemima's – but we were disappointed or we were just unlucky.

While treating our grandmother for lunch, we experienced the red-carpet treatment from the Jemima team! Helping hands with getting up the small step, placing our table closer to the cozy fireplace and even small lap blankets to make sure we're comfortable. In addition to the cozy and artistic vibe, the food was AMAZING to put it lightly. The beef and ostrich fillets were mouthwatering soft and delicious with the accompanied sauces. In addition, I was surprised by how yummy breadpudding can be. All in all - a definite GEM!

We visited The Bright House at the end of January and ate at Jemima’s Restaurant in the evening! It was a super experience and the food was first class with excellent service! I had the Salmon Carpaccio followed by Ostrich which was cooked to perfection. My husband ordered the Marrow starter ( very different ) and had a very nice Fillet steak for his main course! We were lucky enough to meet the owners Pierre and Debbie who were also eating at the Restaurant that evening ( which is always a good sign) and they advised us on Wine from the area to accompany our meal. Pierre definitely knows a thing or two about wine!! Quite an expert I would say! An extremely enjoyable evening and highly recommended! We are UK visitors with a Hospitality background. Thank you Jemimas and The Bright House!

Jamima’s past its best time! The food was disgusting for a high class restaurant and the garden restaurant needs some renovation. It was the worst food we had in S.A. The Chef was not able to handle Load Shedding challenge. We expected more creativity and flexibility in the menu to deal with the L.S. since it is pre-announced.

This was ou third time back at Jemima's and I can summarise our experience with two words, "Consistently Amazing". Often one returns to a restaurant where you had a great experience and it never quite lives up to that first time but Jemimas certainly does. The owners have recently renovated the building and the gardens and the fresh touches are great. Some nice new changes to the menu also, the oven-baked salmon is a must-try. Service is was excellent as usual, the Maitre d, Frank, is always friendly upon arrival and the whole team goes out of their way to make you feel welcome. We always enjoy the owner's private selection of lesser "know" wines which is something special to try if you are a wine lover. Jemima's is a quintessential part of any Oudtshorrn/Karoo trip! See you soon!

Let’s put it like this: maybe we caught them on the wrong foot this evening. It started out that our table was shaking from uneven stands and we literally had to tell the waiter what to do to sort it out. Then we ordered our ostrich after some discussion about medium or medium rare as medium per the waiters suggestion. While all the tables around us got served some greetings from the kitchen, we were not. Suddenly our mains came and I asked the waiter about the greetings. The answer: you don’t understand, they come later (?). My ostrich was really overcooked and at the best medium well and pretty dry. I pointed this out to another waitress that was more up to her job and she offered to give me a new try, this time rather medium rare. The manager came and apologized and then it took a good half our before I got my new food. In the meantime my wife was of course long finished. When my second meal arrived the ostrich was on the more rare side but pretty tough to chew - maybe a bad piece of the bird, no one’s fault. When I ordered the bill the wine was considerably more expensive on the bill than on their shelf, but the waitress couldn’t see this. So: would I come back? Certainly not. That said: it is a lovely restaurant with a nice setting and maybe they just had a bad day.

Travelling through Oudtroorn on our way up the Garden Route Jemima's came highly recommended by my family. This is a great restaurant for a romantic dinner but there were several larger tables in the back which looked great for bigger groups. We had the duck confit and ostrich steaks which were both prepared to perfection. Beautiful interior decor and art make for a very special setting. We would certainly recommend Jemimas!

The staff were most helpful and made menu suggestions and prepared a special meal to accommodate our diet. The food was delicious and the environment relaxing and peaceful. Our first meal out since lockdown was memorable.

We visited Jemima’s on Friday the 23rd for a quick lunch. We ordered both the house salad. The service was friendly and the salad fresh. BUT The salad was 90% lettuce leaves, 3 small rosa tomatoes cut in halve, 6 olives, few cucumber slices, some red onion, some feta and some nuts at a rediculous R120 per plate. This was defenitily not worth this price. We were charged R230 for a bottle off Darling Cellars Chenin Blanc, retail price R55. Lunch came to R505 (tip not included) (we ordered a bottle of water as well) which was daylight robbery. A total rip off!! We will never go back again.

Just had our yearend-function and it was fantastic. I had a fillet steak which was prepared perfectly with some delicious vegetables and rice. The food was presented beautifully and the service was friendly. Some of the other guests ordered food from a new tapas menu which looked very interesting and delicious!! I would highly recommend Jemima's to any one who is looking for a place to treat someone with a 5 start restaurant feeling!

“I am very easy to please. The best always satisfies me”. These are words my mother often uttered jokingly! So when she died recently we couldn’t think of a better venue to celebrate her life than Jemimas restaurant in Oudtshoorn. It was one of her most favorite places to go for years. Pierre and his team promised to give her a beautiful send off and I have to say, they blew us away. The attention to detail did not go unnoticed by anyone who came to say their last farewell. Thank you Pierre, you have really gone out of your way to create a beautiful service for our mother. She would’ve given you top marks. You gave her the best. She would’ve been more than satisfied.
