Slow slow slow service

Food was good but took forever. Sunday brunch one would expect to be busy at this lovely location but our drinks orders were incorrect and food took about an hour to be served- not great when one has kids. Won’t be back to eat.

Beautiful view, good service (although place was busy during Sunday lunch hours and it took long to bring food to table). Value for money - definitely not! Shared Bitterballen as starter, and two portions of hake, one with chips and one with salad. One fried calamari and salad. Salads not up to standard, couple of lettuce leaves, three half cherry tomatoes, two thin onion slices. Bill touched on R1000 for three people, with only two bottles of Duthies white blend

Top marks for location, food and service

We had reserved a table, which was just as well as the outside tables were almost all taken at 1pm on a Tuesday. Service was very efficient, but also relaxed and friendly. We chose 3 tapas dishes to share: all were very good and generous enough to make a perfect light lunch. Stunning beach view! Considering the quality, location and ambiance, extremely good value. We will definitely return if we are ever in the area again.

Bad Mother's Day experience

I can't comment on the food, because of the bad taste left in my mouth by a rude waitress. After booking a table we were impolitely given the option to either leave the restaurant or move to another table inside. Apparently we took too long to order our food as there was another booking for our table. This after our waitress did not come to take our orders for an hour after being seated. The owner did not seem to mind. We moved inside to a table too small to fit our family and again we had to wait for an extra chair to squeeze around the table.

My favourite meal of the holiday

That says it all, never did any meal dissapoint on out travels, but visiting Dutchies on a very warm sunny lunchtime really hit the spot. The yellow tail fish served on roasted vegs and potatoes was absolutely delicous, my other half enjoyed his hake and chips and we even squeezed a pudding in to share too. Lovely chilled wine to accompany, great atmosphere, we absolutely loved our time there.

How disappointing

Booked at table for 7 , shown to our table, waited 15 minutes before we approached by a waiter to order a drink . We did noticed that several staff were gossiping and being playful behind the bar. We waited another 10 or so minutes before our order was taken to be informed that there was no tuna hake or mussels the only fish available was salmon ...... what a waste of time and energy

Dear mr Greenfield. Thank you for taking the time to post a review and please accept our most sincere apologies for your disapointing experience at Dutchies. Whilst running out of fresh seafood on a sunday night is quite reasonable; receiving unatentive service is definitely not nor is it what we strive for. My General manager has looked into the issue and found the waiter in question to have been tardy and unattentive, we do believe that you would have been far more understanding had he been present and adequetly attentive. To this end we would love to offer you the oppertunity to enjoy yourself at Dutchies with a complimentry fish and chips for two accompanied by a bottle of our delicious house wine. We truly hope to see you again and once again offer our sincerest appologies. Kind regards.

Very disappointed

If I could give a zero rating I would. We ordered from their ‘specials’ board, yellow tailed fish and seafood and avocado salad. The salad was probably the worst meal I’ve ever had in South Africa. Loads of lettuce, some prawns, calamari and crab sticks. I cannot believe a restaurant serves crab sticks which are cheap imitation crab meat made of starch and finely pulverized white fish that has been shaped and cured to resemble crab. We complained but the manager was ambivalent and tried to convince us it was made of crab. We won’t go back there and if I were you I’d avoid this restaurant.

A great location overlooking a stunning and huge beach. The restaurant was quiet when we arrived and we said we’d be back after having a walk on said magnificent beach. When we got back the place was packed but they’d reserved a table for us. So kind! My husband had the fillet steak and was so pleased with the tenderness and flavour he said he wanted to hug the chef. My hake and calamari was delicious. The service was friendly. Our waitress recommended wines to drink and a dessert to try. Excellent choices. To our English eyes the bill was tiny. We left extremely full and very happy.

Relaxing venue

Luckily Dutchies wasn't busy despite it being holiday season, so we easily got a table. My friend didn't enjoy his fish and chips, as the coating on the fish wasn't to his liking. My sushi was fine, but if I had a complaint, the pieces were too big to put into my mouth in one go. Rather serve smaller bite sized pieces, which sushi is meant to be.

Had a fabulous lunch here following a day on this beautiful grotto beach and stayed at Baleens hotel. Not particularly glamorous but the food was also a very high standard, some of the guys had the amazing sushi, a selection of Tapas. Great value for money I would definitely recommend it to anyone

Dutchies- delish! Read further

After cancelling a more upmarket reservation, partner wanted fresh fish so decided on Dutchies at Voelklip beach. We arrived there and were warmly welcomed as if they were waiting for us as if we were eating in ones own home! Seated at the fire, the waiter brought a coke zero for him and a glass of wine for myself while we perused the menu. As we had had a late ish lunch we settled on fried fresh fish which was hake and calamari combo and decided to share. When the food arrived it had been split in the kitchen( so thoughtful) but the portion was so adequate i actually though before the second plate was put down that it was a full portion! A side salad accompanied my dish and we each got a half portion chips of which i had a couple . Delicious freshly fried freshest hake, our absolute BEST! Unpretentious no nonsense delicious tasting well presentedfood, great ambiance, welcoming staff, will happily return many times over.

Award for Worst Burger

Ordered a beef burger and received a meatball made with more bread or oats or whatever to make it a dry ball, no taste of beef or meat whatsoever, you get one sliver of lettuce, a slice of tomato and a slice of cucumber. No sauce, no basting, no onion or anything to help you get this bland dry ball swallowed. After I told the waitress I need sauce or something as this was the most bland dry burger ever and I am really not satisfied, she did nothing to make it better. They brought me some tomato sauce to get it down. At R120 for just the burger this is a total waste of money, dry bread, dry patty zero trimmings. Go for a a drink but stay clear of their burgers. The fish and chips were fresh and good. Almost the Worst burger I have had in the last couple of years!

Great food, location and atmosphere

We were at Dutchies and it was great. The food (and even Bitterballen) was prepared with great flavour, it was quick and well presented. We opted for a tapas style lunch and had the goats cheese, wrapped in parma ham amongst others. It is well worth it! Delicious. The setting has a great view of the beach and crashing waves. Well worth a visit. Make a booking though, as it fills up fast

Dutchies @ Grotto: great disappointment......!

Visited Dutchies on Saturday 8 November 2021. Ordered a sushi platter (which does not come cheap), but what a disappointment. Quality was sub-standard and almost inedible. We did not want to complain, as it would have spoiled our evening. The tuna and salmon did not appear fresh at all. Their regular customers will certainly not accept this standard of food.

Cracking lunch relaxed venue good staff

Popped over for lunch walking across the coastal path from hotel. Close to beach, not on the beach but good. Very attentive staff, nice menu choice, frozen margaritas and club sandwiches were lovely with very reasonably priced Chenin blanc
