We chanced upon this restaurant and were persuaded to use it by the owner, who was very friendly and extolled its virtues. We were not disappointed. However, the service was very slow, perhaps we were unlucky. It is the only restaurant I have been to in a long time where no bread was served before the meal and surprisingly, when my wife managed to obtain two small slices, R13 appeared on the bill! In spite of this, the food was excellent and we considered going again (but went to La Pentola instead, which was also very good).

Wow!! We were recommended by a passer by to visit a fish/seafood restaurant, however, once I’d spied 1904 it instantly attracted me to visit.... we were not disappointed! As you walk in you feel like the place gives you a Groot hug, so welcoming. The staff were so accommodating, offering friendly and personal service, making you feel special... I loved the menus on the chalk boards as it reassured you that the produce was all fresh and seasonal... Sean opted for the peri peri chicken livers which melted in your mouth, the Thai bisque was light and fragrant, I loved it! For mains Sean enjoyed the seafood curry which was packed full of delicious steak of the sea (thanks Molly) and beautiful shellfish. My Portuguese prawns were fat and meaty, perfectly prepared. We were too full for desserts but enjoyed our wine in the courtyard where we sat and chatted, laughed and engaged with the hosts Johann and Edriana! A wonderful evening, fine food and wine, but more importantly fabulous company! We will be back on our next visit. Thank you Michelle and Sean x

Seeing the owner carefully smoke his pork belly for 3 1/2 hours made it the obvious choice. The taste was beyond exceptional and the service by the owners Andrea and her husband/ chef Johan makes one feel homey and welcoming the instant you enter this quint little restaurant.
A must visit when in Hermanus, who recently was awarded UNESCO’s award for Creative and Sustainable gastronomy!
Cafe 1904 lives up to this unique award!

Well, this ‘locals’ favourite’ was cosy and welcoming. Menus were written on blackboards, brought round by a server - starters, mains and wines on different boards.
Known for its seafood, we thought that ordering this in Hermanus would be foolproof. Sadly, not the case.
The calamari starter was soused in lemon juice, oil and cayenne pepper, and the seafood curry that we ordered to follow used the same sauce. It was swimming in oil, the pieces of fish and a few prawns were way overcooked, and there was a complete absence of usual curry flavours ( cumin, cardamom, etc.). A mild Cape Malay style curry would have been fine, but this was unrecognisable.
The gracious owner did give us a discount on the bill when we pointed the problems out, for which we were grateful, but this meal was, without doubt, the worst we have ever eaten in SA.

Having read all the good reviews on TA we were disappointed. We were told the oysters were the biggest and best available, they were smaller and significantly more expensive than ones we had had a few nights previous. The wine we were recommended, which was at the top of the price range was only average. My wife’s belly pork was chewy and hard to eat, she left most of it.

Very nice meal very attentive service . I love it when you can see customer service written all over. This restaurant explains every detail and is quick to proactively clarify aspects of the menu.
Food is very good well presented
I had the seafood curry which was excellent

Trip Advisor doesn’t let you post a second review within the same month so, having since returned to the UK (and the Coronavirus pandemic) I just wanted to confirm that my second visit to Cafe 1904 was as good as, if not better, than the first! I had a special fish fish - ‘silver fish’ -!and while I’ve no idea what it was it was cooked beautifully and tasted wonderful. Throughout dinner the staff asked how I was enjoying my meal, without being over-attentive, and I greatly appreciated their customer service. IF YOU GET TO HERMANUS THEN CAFÈ 1904 IS A MUST!

We stopped in here for coffee in the afternoon and decided to return for dinner as it was a small place and the staff were really friendly. What a good decision! I had the slow cooked lamb shank and my husband had the sirloin steak, both were delicious. We also had puddings which were equally excellent. Best food so far in two weeks and we haven't had a bad meal anywhere.

We decided to drive the scenic route to Hermanus, a wise decision although the weather had ruled out eating outside by the time we arrived. There is a seaview and plenty of outside space but we were inside in a very cosy small area with a log fire,(such as that one was not conscious of being the only guests). As no other guests so no Covid concerns. Friendly owners and an excellent waitress.
Fairly wide selection of imaginative fish and meat dishes. We needed fish and started with mussel in a delicious slightly spicy sauce ( not the usual white concoction). We then had a platter for two which included tempura prawn, prawns, (could have been cooked crispier for my taste),plenty of absolutely delicious calamari perfectly cooked and then we finished off with really fresh tasty hake and the remains of the chips (best fish and chips in ages! We took our time over the meal and it will go down in memory as our first real fish meal since lockdown.

We went to this restaurant based on the very good reviews it receives. The owners are lovely and made us feel very welcome. There are no menus and the starters blackboard was shown to us with a good variety on it. My and my friends problem with this is I like to compliment starter against main and you don’t have the mains board presented until you are ready to order them. The other feeling you get is pressured to choose as the member of staff stands there with the menu while you choose. One of our starters was incorrect and was changed quickly being blamed on a shortage of the normal staff which we understood. The other dishes and courses were fine. Friend had a house rose while the rest of us had shorts. No sweets and cost was 500-600 rands £25-30 which is top end during our stay in S Africa. All in all it’s a lovely quaint restaurant that didn’t quite hit the mark that night.

Wow how do I start.. the staff was amazing and kind but I feel so sorry and sad them! The owners behavior was absolutely disgraceful! While waiting for our food he aggressively shouted at 4 staff, then proceeded to fire one of his chefs by screaming "leave now you're fired get out of here"! This was loud enough that we could hear everything. Over an above he was not wearing a mask in the kitchen which we found to be unacceptable during these times. After our meal I gently approached him to tell him his staff and food was lovely but we'd overheard the commotion and also would have appreciated him wearing a mask. This set him off and he began screaming in my face telling me to "f!@CK off and get out". My father and mother tried to stand in front of me to tell him to calm down and he pushed my elderly mother into a wall. His wife got involved and apologized to us but I have never been treated with such disrespect. It is such a shame this place is being run by this man. I will never return or recommend this restaurant as a result

Above 4 - not booked guests - were welcomed by myself and tables were put together to accommodate them during a very busy time. Within the first 15 minutes of their entering I realized trouble was hanging in the air and we have to be on alert. They requested to 'squeeze' their kitchen order in between other orders on which I answered that it is against our policy. Within these 15 minutes above young lady complained there were no toiletpaper in the bathroom I checked the bathroom and the two new rolls earlier supplied was still available... then I was called by the same young woman to the outside of my restaurant telling me that she was not happy with the waiter... her reason: she did not feel good in the hosts company. They were extremely loud and guests in the same room were not at all at ease especially when their deafening laughs broke loose about a second glass scattered on the floor ended up underneeth nearby tables. When they got up to leave and called on the chef commotion broke loose from their side on which they were asked to leave the premises and while still standing in the door to our embarresment they shamelessly showing vulgar signs in the presence of sofisticated and embarresed guests. Surely this tipe of inappropriate performance is not acceptable in any restaurant or public place and right of admission will be reserved

Great little restaurant. We had the snails starter and mussel starter, both were delicious, the sauce was very tasty. For mains we had the seafood curry and seafood pasta, again both beautifully cooked and tasty. I didn’t want mussels in the curry which the kitchen gladly made the dish without. The service and owner were great and engaging.

Extremely disappointed this time around and unfortunately won’t go back. The seafood curry was sent back as we specifically asked what was in it and was told that it doesn’t have any calamari in it, when it arrived it was full of squid tentacles ! Apparently the chef decided to throw some in and make it nicer - more like filling up the dish with cheap stuff. Then when it came back it had one prawn and tiny pieces of fish and at that price it was truly not worth it. Steaks were not good and very very under cooked but didn’t feel like we could send anything else back. Also a very limited wine list and no desserts or they just weren’t offered. What a pity !

It was because of the high rating this restaurant has that we made a reservation during our three day stay in Hermanus. What a pity. The food is overpriced. We left hungry and went back to the restaurant we enjoyed the previous night for dessert. I honestly thought the decor was a joke the owners were playing on visitors🙈and I felt sorry for the staff. The owners are the friendliest people until you’re not happy with their offering. Once they are offended you are the enemy 🫠😂take note of the low reviews. They’re not made up. And I’m seriously wondering about those high ratings…

Delicious food, cozy ambiance, and personable owners. Stopped by for dinner due to all the wonderful reviews and the place didn’t disappoint. The restaurant feels like you’re dining in someone’s home and the the portions were large, tasty, and beautifully presented. The owner would stop and chat with all the guests, making it a truly personal experience. Also, the fries here are the best fries I’ve ever had anywhere, and it’s not just the seasoning. I don’t know what they do to fry it so perfectly but those fries were heaven. Highly recommended.
