We enjoy coming back to Raj in Constantia. The food is consistent in quality and they manage to source great waiters... friendly and knowledgeable...a real pleasure and experience!

No wonder it was very quiet, our food was very good but the prices were very expensive in South Africa terms. No ambience and only a few tables the whole evening.

Went to The Raj in Constantia Village for lunch today, our usual curry spot in Retreat was closed for renovations. First time eating here. Place looked nice. Service was great, food was not great. My Chicken Korma meal was cold when it arrived and didn't taste like curry at all. R148.00 (small portions) for just the curry, rice was another R38.00 and paratha another R38.00. My fiancée, being a vegetarian, couldn't find a suitable vegetable curry and asked to have the Butter Chicken. She had the chicken replaced with vegetables instead. We were charged the same price as the Butter Chicken dish. Overpriced for what we got. Have to get some chocolate as comfort food after this, 'not so good' experience.

Being Vegetarian I was looking forward to an Indian meal as I am usually well catered for, what I got was a packet of mixed frozen veg with a ready made curry sauce stirred through it (no doubt from their own range that they are now promoting!). No passion for food or pride in the cooking here, just (very) underwhelming chain food. Disappointing.

I ordered take out chicken korma , food was inedible Chicken tough and stringy, sauce tasted off, was strangely flavoured and did not taste like a korma should taste . Exceptionally bad. I called restaurant and spoke to manager who tried to give me a lesson in what a korma curry is and refused to take any responsibility. I have ordered this meal before pre-lockdown and it was excellent. Furthermore, all the dishes we ordered were disappointing and not up to their previous standard although not as bad as the korma which we had to throw away . Clearly they have changed chefs, the food is expensive and poor ,we will not be ordering ftom them again.

On Wednesday night the 18th November we had an amazing meal with our amazing friends who we hadn’t seen since the lockdown!! Abdul was our honest and was extremely proud and passionate about the food available at the restaurant!! He suggested 3 starts for the table to share and we all enjoyed all 3! We then ordered our mains. I ordered the lamb vindaloo which I enjoy as a meal because it’s normally the hottest/spiced meal on most Indian restaurants. Raj didn’t disappoint ( although I do like my food extra hot )! Abdul asked if it was hot enough and I asked that he asks the chef to make it hotter. When he returned with my meal it was exactly as I like it. We all had wonderful mains and Abdul continued to check that we were happy. I would definitely recommend Raj to any locals who enjoy an authentic Indian meal. It’s also a very affordable menu!!! Will definitely be eaten there again in the future!! Thank you Abdul for making our evening out memorable!! Regards Alan and friends.

Granted we were a table of 12, but this does not excuse the worst Indian meal we’ve ever had. We ordered lamb and definitely got something else, but the confusion was such that everyone sort of settled for what they got. So OK not lamb, but inedible beef concoction. No shrimp available at all. The naan breads were average and cold to boot. Wine orders for what limited offering was in stock came out as Chardonnay when Sauvignon Blanc was ordered. You get the picture...restaurant was not busy early on a Monday night, so avoid unless this is what you like in an expensive restaurant.

We held my son's 21st birthday party at this smart but yet cosy restaurant, the waiters were great, food was yummy and everyone had a wonderful experience. I recommend The Raj for special occasions.

This remains one of the best places for Indian food just about anywhere.
There were 6 dishes in total for all of us and each person said they were fantastic.

What a disappointing experience we had at this Indian restaurant. My advertised meal of three lamb chops turned out to be a bowl of mutton bones smothered in masala sauce! And my daughter's butter chicken was more sauce than chicken - I had a portion of double the size for half the price at Mugg & Bean recently. So we certanly won't be returning to pay premium prices for sub-standard food.

A lovely experience all round! From the friendly welcome at the door, to the attentive manager giving advice on meal choices and checking on us mid-meal, and not forgetting our warm and friendly waitress. Our meals were outstanding, the restaurant and tables beautifully decorated and set - we felt as though we were being entertained in an upmarket home. Prices were on par for the high standard of food we enjoyed - we will definitely be back! Considering how hard the hospitality industry has been hit during Covid, this establishment deserves every cent they make - we couldn’t fault them on anything. Thank you for a wonderful meal out.

Exceptional service and fantastic food. The manager found the rare perfect balance of being hands on, friendly and extremely accommodating but not intrusive. Highly recommended!

I’ve been to The Raj a few times and found the service great and the food exceptional. So as a gift to a couple, who recently got engaged, I thought a voucher for the Raj would be perfect, that way I could introduce them to The Raj as a great place to go for dinners in the area.
On the 19th of December, I popped in to The Raj, Constantia, where I spoke to the manager on duty, Jaco. He was unable to help on the day, as he said that he would need to contact head office for the voucher but took my details and assured me that he would come back to me. Fast forward a week and still no feedback from Jaco or any other management from the store or the head office. I then went back into the restaurant to see if the voucher was ready. I spoke to Jaco and he said that he needed to get vouchers from head office - the same story as the week before. No follow up, no apologies and just a general ‘couldn’t care less’ attitude.
This is very disappointing as the management clearly doesn’t match the service and food that I have become accustomed to at The Raj.

Remember my disability review for The Raj in Camps bay? Not on the “hot” side unfortunately, whereas Constantia had me smiling from the beginning.
Situated in a shopping complex the benefit of easy access made getting into the restaurant magic. Parking for the disabled was available right outside the entrance. We were situated fairly close to the door but away from any disturbances of people coming in or going out. Unlike the last Raj there was no need to enter through the kitchen and for anyone using a powered wheelchair there is ample space for moving.
Once again our party was lost in orbit as David our waiter ran backwards and forwards bringing Indian cuisine cooked to perfection. A bit of everything and then some more as Prawn Boohna, Chicken Tikka Masala and Nizami Gosht Biryani (Boneless lamb) were complimented by a vegetarian’s dream of Dahl Makni (black lentils with herbs and sun-dried spices), Channa Masala (chick peas cooked with onions, tomatoes, chilli and ginger) and Saag Aloo (diced potatoes cooked in a spinach gravy with garlic and cumin). Interspersed with Basmati and Saffron rice these dishes were swopped from one hand to the next. No shop bought bread to sup up the dregs but Peshwari Naan (traditional Indian bread stuffed with sultanas and cashew nuts). Some coolness for the throats included Grapetizer, Bottled water, Phat Indian Craft Beer and (I kid you not) Calmer Sutra Craft Beer. Two bottles of Boschendal white wine accompanied this assault of the taste senses.
Like the other Raj there is no toilet for the disabled, but as is standard in a shopping complex there was one in the centre. Easy enough to get too as the ride is flat and effortless. The evening ended with lots of doggie bags and smiling faces. It was a wonderful and exotic experience for our taste buds and the friendly and efficient service from David made it a very enjoyable evening. Will I go back? I see no reason not too and encourage other wheelchair users to do the same.
