The highlight of our culinary experience in South Africa was a visit to a restaurant called Reverie Social Table in the Observatory neighborhood. Run by a young (30-ish) chef, Julia Hattingh (pictured below), it is a 4 1/2-5 hour food and wine palooza and party...for up to 16 guests sitting at a community table. Julia tries to encourage the guests to switch seats halfway through the dinner to encourage more socializing. That happens every couple of weeks, she said, but with Lisa’s not-so-subtle urging, ours was one of those nights.
We arrived at 6:30 for wine, introductions, and general schmoozing. There were 14 of us there that night—two others from the US, six from the UK, and 4 from Australia/New Zealand. Everyone was considerably younger than us, though that apparently is not always the case. Two couples were on their honeymoons.
We were seated just after 7:00. The food was exquisitely prepared. Every dish had more ingredients than I could keep track of as Julia recited them with tremendous attention to detail. The third course was an amazing beef carpaccio with bone marrow and a rice cake. The entree was a poached yellow tail over a soup filled with vegetables. Both are pictured below. Great cheeses and dessert finished off the marathon. And there was a least one guest with diet limitations that Julia accommodated effortlessly (we all coveted the hummus served that guest, that replaced the butter served with our homemade scones). The wine freely flowed—all 5 or 6 (I lost count, but I remember 3 different Chenin Blancs, a Pinotage—the main native grape of South Africa, a cross breeding of Pinot Noir and Cinsault (Hermitage)—and a red Cabernet based blend) from one particular winery in the Western Cape region, Carl Everson from the Opstal Estate.
This is not to be missed but make your reservations early. Don't hesitate to go alone - it's warm, convivial, and utterly delightful!!More
