In an almost empty restaurant We ordered cocktails that took at least half an hour to arrive. I ordered pasta my fellow diners ordered steaks. My pasta was a sloppy mess. I ate it as we had waited so long for it. One guest had...a poor steak, not cooked to choice. the other guest was satisfied with their steak. Chips were soggy. As for the waiter, he got worse as the evening wore on, far too familiar and eventually almost incoherent. When my son went to complain at the end of the evening there was no manager just the head waiter to hear his complaint. It is not surprising that the restaurant was almost empty. I have been eating at La Perla for nearly 50 years and was shocked by how it has deteriorated in every way.More

La Perla is undoubtedly the most disappointing restaurant, placed in an ideal location with stunning views. One thing is certain, the entire establishment requires a DO-OVER, including staff, decor, entire restaurant. It’s overpriced for the quality of food and wine. Service is atrociously slow and...waiting staff makes no secret that they want to be tipped ‘well’. We didn’t have a reservation but on arrival no one to greet & seat us. The ‘hostess’ came sauntering out clearly annoyed that she had to be called over to seat guests! Once seated, given what looked like a cheaply photocopied menu, we were ignored for a good 20+minutes. Just as we talked about leaving, an exasperated waiter took our drinks order. Wine was ok. Starter, very dry. Pasta, goopy. Dessert, mediocre. There’s no imagination on food prep to align with the prices. La Perla has so much potential to become the high end restaurant it once was. The only charm for a positive experience is the outside seating area, where you could bask in the sun whilst enjoying the stunning views of the promenade overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Cape Town is certainly filled with surprises.More

This restaurant emphises above all the need for senior management always to be on hand. The day we went, no senior manager was evident. We had no complaints about our lunch. But looking around, it was apparent that no one was in charge. A stream...of dubious people turned up and wandered around the establishment unchecked. Some didn't even bother to order a meal or a drink and simply hung around showing off. Others moved from table to table, never happy. This could be a good daytime lunch venue but the owners need to get a grip on the place.More

Recommended to us by a friend in Monaco, I was looking forward to dinner by the seaside. On first look, the restaurant was beautiful, with large terrace on the seaside. We asked to be seated on the terrace as we had had reservations for quite...a while before however, we were seated inside at a rather cramped table next to a large party of celebratory people. The people next to us were not there very long before they left, so noise was not a problem. The table was positioned so that all we can do is look outside and watch the tables empty, as we waited and waited and waited for service. Once a member of the weight staff came to our table, they brought us what was basically a photocopied menu consisting of two sides of very limited Italian dishes — nothing at all extraordinary. A summer menu wad offered with three different starters, and three different main dishes — none of which was very appealing. The order for wine was met with a lack of certainty about whether it was in stock. It took about 15 minutes for the server to come with a totally different wine. I ordered beef carpaccio, which was very good, but cut so thinly that you had to scrape it off the plate. The tuna steak was ordered rare, but came in two pieces, one medium snd the other well done. My spouse had the chicken special in a cream sauce, which I tasted with a distinct taste of flour, as if it was dipped in batter, but not allowed to cook enough for the batter to be fully cooked. We skipped dessert, as we were not pleased with the meal. Service was indifferent, and uneven, without any sense of graciousness or appreciation of our patronage of the restaurant. And it is a shame: the restaurant was full, and I got the sense that it was a restaurant that catered to locals and to straight couples. We were neither.More

We last ate at La Perla around five years ago, and were underwhelmed by both food and service. However, a friend having suggested we have dinner together there, we decided to give it another go. Big mistake! We ordered caprese salad and beef carpaccio as...starters, to be followed by the “summer special”, described as creamy chicken with ginger sweet potatoes and enthusiastically endorsed by our waiter. The starters arrived reasonably promptly and were fine, if ordinary. About an hour later, there was still no sign of the main course. When, after much chasing, it eventually emerged, it was unidentifiable as edible fodder, consisting of a small, hard, flat piece of chicken smothered in a dark and gloopy mess. The “ginger sweet potatoes” were more like a soup, swimming in an oily mush. By that time, we were so hungry that we ate it anyway. It was, without a shadow of a doubt, the single worst meal we have ever experienced in Cape Town. As we finished, my husband, who had a direct line of sight through the kitchen door, watched as a waiter attempted to pick up three platefuls of food. Unbalanced, the contents of one plate slipped to the floor, whereupon the waiter calmly bent down, retrieved said contents and replaced it on the same plate. We did not wait to see to which unfortunate customer it was served, but paid our extortionate bill and beat our retreat. Cape Town is, deservedly, celebrated as a foodie’s paradise. It is a great shame that La Perla - a CT institution and, mysteriously, always busy - gets away with such inexplicably atrocious food and service.More

Was so disappointed Ten years ago was a really great restaurant. After today lunch we will never gonna come back again. We ordered lamb chops, it was not eatable at all, then they replaced it with tailgate, it also was not eatable. So we just...left hungry. The stuff was also not welcoming at all. Manager came to us in the end and told it is their best seller. I am wondering who is ordering this rubbishMore

Totally disorganised. We got a wine list but no menus until we asked for them. Then we had to beg to be allowed to order. All good… or not. Then there was wait… wait… wait… wait… wait… wait… About an hour later and only after...having to be rather rude to the waiter the food showed up. Well cooked pasta with six (6) clams. Rather little I would think… Grilled calamari with chili and garlic. Way too small a portion of however nice calamari with no trace of chilli or garlic. That is a definite no. Avoid!More

I am back in Cape Town on holiday and of course had to book my favourite restaurant for dinner. Sadly I was bitterly disappointed. I encountered the rudest hostess who, when I asked whether they had any blankets for the outside terrace , as it...got really cold later into the evening, told me they didn’t have any, which I pushed back on as this Is really something that shroud be offered as a service when you have have an outside seating area, particularly at a restaurant of this level (and in the absence of outoor heaters). She said “what do you expect, for me to buy you a blanket.” The manager then came over to apologise, he was as apologetic as he was useless, not offering any solution and certainly no compensation at all. It’s sad to see, what was once an institution, has now gone down the tubes. Food was also really disjointed, main course was only taken an hour after we sat down. I recommend never visiting this mismanaged restaurant with the deranged hostess who wouldn’t know good customer service if it jumped up and slapped her in the face.More

We looked forward to visit this iconic restaurant on our arrival in Cape Town. It was unfortunately a huge disappointment. On arrival we were seated outside as requested. It was a perfect hot summer!s evening. Three of the six people were facing the sun. It...became unbearable. No umbrella was available. Next the white wine ordered was room temp. One of us ordered beer but unfortunately the glass was dirty. Our fish and calamari dishes didn’t arrive together. Unfortunately this was also disappointing and poorly presented. Pity that a restaurant with such a beautiful setting doesn’t live up to expectationsMore

I don’t have another word - except horrible. Food was less than average. Had a starter of Caprese Salad - average and prosciutto and melon. No melon - offered pineapple 🙈 Took forever for our first drinks to arrive. Only plus for this restaurant is...it’s location - so I would suggest sundowners (very expensive) unless you are from Europe and used to paying a LOT! Then go elsewhere for decent food. PS - toilets filthyMore

Honestly, this is one of the best spots for dinner in Cape Town. It is a little pricey by local standards but if you have foreign currency it's no different to what you'd pay in EU/US, possibly a bit cheaper. Fantastic enourmous seafood platter was...enjoyed by all and drinks were excellent.More

I'll never understand how a restaurant can run out of a main ingredient. Our entire table wanted a sole and they didn't have soles, nor 3 other items we ordered. So we were all left ordering grilled kinglip. Now luckily it was a great piece...of fish for everyone. Fresh, generous and delicious. Vegetables are like hostel or boarding school vegetables, just boiled carrots, beans and I can't even think of the 3rd ingredient. Probably frozen vegetables. The rocket salad was so damn delicious I could have just eaten that all night. Someone ate prawn pasta and that was really good and another the mussels and loved them.More
