Rocked up with Friends for an early dinner on Friday night
I'm not one for restaurants situated in shopping centres but was pleasantly surprised by N V 80.
Impeccable service followed by outstanding dishes that were freshly cooked and served to perfection.
Great atmosphere and...the entire experience was one that we will certainly be returning for.More
On arrival we were greeted by the hostess then seated by the manageress, our waiter was pleasant, and informative, told us about their specials, started us with some aperitifs, recommended a great red wine, and started us with a delightful salmon carpaccio and their tender...trinchado, for main course we had a tender and flavourful sirloin on the bone and fresh line fish and ended our evening with their mouth watering strawberry mousse tart, deconstructed and well presented, was so delicious. Was good to see the owner present inter acting with his clients and the manager (female) came to talk to us and checking how we doing. Great and friendly. We had a pleasant experience, cant wait to go back. All staff and manageress professional.More
This restaurant was rated the best in Sea Point on Trip Advisor, which led me to book it for my wife's 30th birthday...
The sad part of our experience was that their steaks are actually amazing (9/10) - but our entire experience was spoiled by...their management's lack of tact in dealing with issues - on 2 occasions.
When we arrived I come in with 2x bottles of wine in my hand - clearly to drink inside. The staff greeted us friendly and took us to our table. We greeted everyone and chatted for 5 minutes. Then proceeded to open our wine and as I was about to pour a glass, the waiter came to stop me. He said "the manager just sent me over to stop you as we don't do corkage". This is weird as most restaurants in Cape Town do offer corkage. Then we looked at the wine list and it was clear why there is no corkage - the cheapest bottles are around R300-R400. We've already opened a special bottle of wine for this occasion & there was never an indication on our booking and when we took our seat that there is no corkage... So we asked the manager on the night (11 Nov '20) if they can make an exception. She replied point blank "no, we don't make exceptions. you can choose from our great wines on our list - how about a nice champagne to start". My problem with this - as soon as there is 'grey areas' like this you need to have some sort of flexibility... And our concerns were not listed to; we were rather referred to their Champagne options starting at R1300.
We it was time for desert, our one guest ordered a "Strawberry mousse tart | deconstructed, pistachio meringue". When it arrived it looked like Chico The Clown's little ugly brother (from Spur). Our guest requested an alternative / swap of some sort. Again with the swift swing of her sword the manager noted that "the waiter explained to you how a deconstructed tart looks" which obviously did not happen at all. My problem - the manager did not show any attempt to understand the client; but rather attacked by pulling incorrect assumptions out of the air. This is incredibly aggravating to someone who are paying R79 for a deformed Chico the Clown.
Point is - this restaurant should not have these high ratings. It is not fair to the public. Even good food is not worth going here as the owner has clearly not invested in training his management team on how to work with customers.More
……..After been in Lock-down indoors for over 120 days plus because of the Covid-19 Pandemic and now with the levels raised we just had to attempt to get out for a bit. With my wife’s birthday due in August we found out that NV-80 a...restaurant we favour and has a good repute from our past experience, we decided to make a reservation for a birthday-lunch. On the day of our arrival at the intriguing wooden-door with the NV 80 on the opposite wall in gold we first noticed that the poster pasted on the door in blue indicating that they were well prepared to combat the spread of the corona-virus. “NO MASK” No entree. The first thing you encounter when you enter is the Sanitizer-Spray Bottle and then the host will take each patrons temperature, show that they comply to and with COVID-Management as per government regulations, directing your attention to this fact where each guest must scan the Bar-Code into their cell-phone and fill out their details as this is administered by “dineplan”. After as this is behind your back you can choose your seating. It was rather sad to note that all the Wines were in jail as in locked-up behind steel mashed netting gates. The beautiful large impressive bar where the Draught-Taps stood like ornaments because they were bone-dry more like Drought-Taps! But didn’t dampen our spirits as they still had sparkling-water and juices to toast with. The restaurant floor-space is massive they even have loads of tables with seating on the “L” shaped outside balcony with the one section direct-lii under the “Lions Head” peak which today was awesome-lii surrounded by a cloud. The decor is neat the wall at the bar is filled with some nice paintings and above the bar counter they have two wire-boats. The manager on floor-duty was very polite and friend-lii and so was our waitron. There is much to choose from on the menu. As they serve you fresh brown-bread with a nice pungent strong dip before you order we decided to skip the starter and go straight to the mains. My wife is a carnivore and ordered a 300g rump-steak and a side of chips. The rest of us were hook by the Calamari-Tubes in a light garlic-marinade and chips. The steak looked more like 500g and filled the plate it was excellent-lii done just as ordered and tender. The calamari was succulent and well flavoured they even threw in same baby-squid which added a niff-tii twist to the presentation and it was indeed delicious. The desert menu is short they list only 3 kinds to choose from 1. Chocolate Fondant / Armagnac-ice cream, 2. Creme Brulee / vanilla, hazelnut shortbread 3. Baked Cheesecake / white chocolate ganache. Seen that we had a birthday-girl here we requested that they serve us all three dessert on one platter and scribble “Happy Birthday” on the plate with chocolate lettering which the manager glad-lii obliged to and even glad-lii serve the dessert-platter and sang “happy birthday” to the birthday-girl, how cool and how awesome was that extra-act which only strengthens and solidifies of repute for the exquisite restaurant. They serve nice cappuccinos but the cups are way too small! We high-lii recommend this venue for any celebrationMore
