What a dissapointment. We had so looked forward to this 30th birthday celebration. Basically the scones which we had heard so much about only arrived at 5pm (tea started at 3pm). No one explained that the cake service closed at 5 (we were told to...wait for the scones before having the cake) so it was a last minute rushed affair with the scones being like round bread textured rolls. Anyhow tried calling the food manager but 2 weeks later he/she has yet to respond. Not what you would expect.More

We experienced Afternoon Tea at the Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town... And it was, indeed, an experience. Our server, Steve, provided descriptions of the many delicious teas. He introduced each Tea course- savory, scone, sweet, and the Cake Bar. Come hungry- we weren't able...to finish all the delicacies, but the staff packed up our extras in little boxes to take back to our hotel. The "Tea Sommelier," Craig, assisted us with getting the maximum flavor from our teas. And we were blessed with a visit by "Nelly," the tearoom cat. If you have the opportunity, don't miss it!More

We went the Mount Nelson on the 7th March for afternoon tea. I had never been there before but my wife had been there a couple of years ago. We arrived at 3pm and after been given a pink napkin to freshen up with (nice...touch) we were asked to wait at the adjacent bar for some reason - probably because our table was not ready. At around 3:20pm we walked out of the bar and sat at the entrance to the afternoon tea area as we thought that they had forgotten us. In this area, there was a selection of cakes that looked very poor for a place famous for its afternoon teas. My wife said that when she was there, there was a huge selection of cakes. Anyway shortly after we were escorted to our table and offered a glass of sparkling rose (again a nice touch as the place is also called the 'pink lady'. We had a plate of sandwiches which to me seemed very average. Only one standout item which was the duck sausage roll. A huge selection of teas - not sure why such a huge tea selection is needed but hey!!. We were then served with some finger cakes and scones ar were pretty much told to hurry things up as the booking was only for 2 hours as they needed the table for 5 pm. The guests next to us were told the same. When I mentioned that we only sat down just before 3:30 pm the lady said that she would give/allow us a few extra minutes. No side plates for scones so I got up myself and got a couple from the cake area at the entrance. We hurriedly ate our scones, which were nice, and at around 5ish we tried to get a cake slice from the entrance. The selection now had been mostly diminished. The photo we took was before we sat down at around 3.30pm. Nothing looked appealing so we had some fresh blueberries and when we sat down and before we'd finished we were given the bill. We were given a couple of small shortbread biscuit boxes. In summary, the hurried nature of the experience and the quality of sandwiches and cakes does not in any way make this a premium offering. We have been to many an afternoon tea in the UK and feel qualified to compare this type of experience. A nice touch was that they also had a chap on the piano but this does not make up for it. It was a bad day for the Mount Nelson and what was to be one of the highlights of our vitits to Cape Town ended up being very very poor. If you want an quality afternoon tea experience please go elsewhere. The MN pricetag is quite heavy for SA . Just for comparison the following night we went to a steak restaurant called Hussars and we both had a 300gr fillet steak with 3 side extras each, a bottle of their red shiraz and a couple of desserts and two chocolate martinis and it cost us less. Don't normally write reviews like this but I do hope it helps the MN to improve.More

The visit was to celebrate my sister's 80th birth and we wanted ite occasion to be very special for her and we couldn't have chosen a better place. It was such a beautiful setting. From our first interaction with staff at the hotel we were...made to feel welcome. Wiseman, the staff member who served us, explained fully what to expect. The food and drink we received was of the highest quality and Wiseman was always around when we had a question, but never overbearing. The two hours passed so quickly and we were very sad for it to come to and end. A thotoughly enjoyable occasion which we will repeat on our next visit to Cape Town.More

We have experienced afternoon tea in several locations in the UK as well as at Reids in Madeira and Mount Nelson tops them all from the location, ambience, staff, food, drink of course including the extensive choice of tea and not to forget the Pianist...along with a tea sommelier and manager. To be given such a wide choice of beverages including a pink sparkling wine, an iced tea as well as your choice of extensive teas from all over the world was fabulous. A high point for me was also the range of savoury items as well as sweet pastries. If that was not enough and we were asked if we would like more there was a table with 6 additional cakes on to chose from. Our waiter Stephen along with his colleagues could not have been more charming, informative and helpful. Well done everyoneMore

What a disappointment. We have done high tea at many hotels and this, regrettably, was the worst on many levels. The welcome was exceptional with refreshment towels and a friendly server. The quality of savory and sweets was below par - it tasted of stale,...mas-produced items. We could not compliment any of items and the array of mediocre fridge tartlets and uninspiring bites, made it hard to enjoy. The tea sommelier was friendly, but did not advise us once which item would compliment which particular tea. The setting is beautiful if you sit outside. The Nellie needs a bit of TLC (something most Capetonians are aware of) but she can be excused for this considering the location. Just don’t do the high tea - a real disappointment.More

Had a high tea on the 6th January which was supposedly festive menu high tea. Food was so meagre for a festive menu that you pay for more. The savoury menu was pathetic for the price you pay. Their classic usual menu is far much...better. Just meagre 1 sandwich 1 with egg and the other with salmon, a butternut canape very weird tasting a gazpacho which was so sour and tasteless, the only okay thing was the duck pastry. Moreover when we arrived we were rushed inside not even offered the wet towels (as all the other guests). Our waiter did not even explain the menu or suggested any tea for us to try. We were just left on our own and left to understand how the high tea works. We were not even explained that there was a dessert buffer that we could also choose cake from. Only at 2 when the service was nearly over that we were told about it. To top everything, we took most of our dessert as take away home to enjoy later. Our waiter while putting it in the bag for us dropped evrything and everything was messed up inside. We had 4 take aways with the pastries carefully put so that they wouldn't touch each other and stay put together because most of them are cream form. But evrything got ruined and it looked so disgusting we had to throw everything away. Overall it was a New Years celebration for me and my family which was completely not enjoyable. Would certainly not recommend.More

I recently had afternoon tea to celebrate a special birthday, while on holiday in Cape Town. What a fantastic treat it was - a sumptuous selection of sweet and savoury foods, all beautifully presented. This was the first time I have consulted a tea sommelier...before placing my order, and he got my selection spot on - a delicious bottomless pot of citrussy tea chosen from their extensive menu. From the initial welcome drink, to the final slice of cake, we felt well looked after, and my sister was also given an extra special treat for her birthday. This was a wonderful way to while away of the afternoon, and was good value for money. I'd highly recommend this experience!More
