About
The story of Cape Town Fish Market is the story of creating a restaurant that strives to create a great experience for our customers. It is a restaurant built on fresh ingredients, a relaxing atmosphere, and, most of all, great-tasting seafood and sushi. But we didn't create a world-class restaurant overnight. The Cape Town Fish Market you know and love today is the result of almost two decades of passion and hard work by CTFM's founder, Douw Krugmann and his family, in partnership with the best franchise owners in South Africa. His wife, sons and daughter have all joined the family business and have played an integral role in making CTFM what it is today. It all began in 1997, when Douw bought a small fresh fish restaurant in Cape Town's famous V&A Waterfront. After operating a Spur Steak Ranch for 13 years, it was the next step in his lifelong quest to improve the restaurant experience in South Africa.

Went for lunch whilst at V&A. Had a large beer each sun was shining. We went for the Hake & calamari special with chips. Service was great and the food outstanding. The fish was fresh and the calamari was beautiful so tasty. To top it all the price was fantastic. Coming from England a meal of this standard in such a great location would have been more than double the amount we paid.

We have been frequent lunch visitors to the Cape Town Fish Market over several years and have yet to have a dud meal or complain about service. From the time of walking through the door, the experience is one of attention to detail. The staff are welcoming and attentive. The choices we've made from the wide selection on the menu have been Sushi, Prawns, Mussels, Grilled Fish...and I forget what more. I think a fish curry and a salmon stack as well. The atmosphere is fresh, very spacious and relaxing. A go to place for locals and tourists alike.

My wife and I eat there twice the time excellant the seafood plater very tasty and plentiful all elements very fresh and tasty the second time we had the same dish and slightly less so the hake was overcooked and dry and mussels seemed to had been under a plate warmer for a while . But still big portion . The ambiance is OK but the last time very cold due to poor weather and heavy rain so everyone was eating with coats on . Very reasonably priced

I cannot blame the waiter that tried to look after us but the whole place needs a shake up. This restaurant is in a prime location and must exist on an old reputation. Firstly the drinks took an age to arrive and eventually they were the worst cocktails we’ve ever had anywhere. Tasteless with far too much ice. If you ignore the sushi element of the menu the rest is unadventurous with a hint of an old traditional steakhouse of the 1980’s. The food did arrive after a really long wait of 30 minutes. It wasn’t as good as a 1980’s steakhouse. We made our case to the waiter who passed this on to his manager who obviously didn’t care as we had no feedback. It wasn’t just us. There was a general feeling of poor service in the room. Don’t waste your money. Worst meal we’ve had this year.

I pre-booked and brought a group of 35 people (22 late teens and 13 adults) for lunch here in early August. Whilst the booking process was digital and so not a personal interaction, we were most pleasantly surprised when we arrived. Tables were set up as requested, with wait staff prepped and ready for us. The food was fantastic - we had a wide selection from sushi to prawns and good old fish n chips - all delicious. The teens were thrilled with the milkshakes as well :). Prices were reasonable considering the excellent quality and location with a gorgeous view. I'd highly recommend for a small or large group.

The Fish Market is the equivalent of a Castelli Romani fraschetta (popular tavern), overlooking the Cape Town harbour. It is a simply furnished but clean and very welcoming place. The staff is pleasant, kind and helpful. You eat local fish cooked well and in generous portions. The local wines are good, although with limited choice. More than fair prices: fish dinner for €19.

The other half just wanted to eat out and we didn’t want to have something too heavy so we opted for seafood and saw CTFM was recommended. Made our way down at 8pm and got seated almost immediately. Server was Siya, and we proceeded with our order as soon we were ready. Remember me saying that we didn’t want to have anything heavy so we opted for 4 pcs of fresh oyster and mussels for the starters. We also opted for Executive Surf and Turf since my missus wouldn’t mind some meat. And I thought a bit of prawns and squids should compliment the whole experience. When the starters were finished, and came the main, we were shocked. A big platter was staring at us. “I” contemplated a while and I thought I should ask Siya if I had ordered surf and turf or platter. He told me platter. It occurred to me that he did mention that the main doesn’t come with crayfish like the illustration in the menu which I acknowledged, however I did not expect my surf to have evolved to a platter. He did ask if we wanted fries, onion rings or salad beside the rice. We said onion rings. And I did not see any onion rings. And why would I have ordered mussels for starters when the platter has a portion of it. If you were to ask me, CTFM is overpriced compared to Ocean Basket and OB tasted so much better. And of course when it came to the billing part, I just opted to round up the bill instead of a customary 10-15% tips I supposed. I got a cold shoulder from my server. LOL. Any probable diners, do double check the orders with your server before he heading back to the kitchen. Lousy dinning experience and the take aways are sitting in the fridge now as I’m typing this. Ocean basket anytime for me.

We are regular visitors to this spot, you can walk in without advance booking and although usually busy it is a big place so plenty of tables always becoming available. We always have the fish and chips and as usual it was very good. We also had ice cream with chocolate sauce for dessert and a bottle of Bosmans Adama Chenin Blanc blend. Smiling faces and friendly service make this a go to place and good value.

Nice outside table for lunch with a pleasant waitress serving me. Had the 200gm fish and chips but the chips (about 10 max) came cold and all shrivelled up. Certainly not straight and hot from the frier. Could even have been someone's leftovers. Why is it that many of the restaurants serve lack-lustre thin-strip chips these days. However the 200gm fish was cooked nicely, was hot and I enjoyed it. If only the chips had come fresh from the same fries then they may have stood a chance.

Not having booked, they were able to accommodate 7 of us outside. Service was prompt and very helpful. Our youngster with us claimed his burger was the best he had had and many of us had the Kalk Seafood Platter which was a perfect size for two. Both the local Fizz and Sauvignon bland were delicious and perfect value. The place had a great vibe about it and we’ll come back in a heart beat.

My friend and I have been living in Zanzibar and going to Cape Town Fish Market for weeks and paying exclusively with card. We are Americans working at the local hospital for an extended amount of time and the ATM fees are extremely expensive for us (upwards of 15$) so, we make sure to get cash on a schedule and purposefully eat at places that accept cards to avoid unnecessary fees. The food at Cape Town Fish Market is very good, however, the last time we visited, their card machine was down so the management demanded we go and get cash. They did not tell us that the machine was down until after we finished our meal and we were ready to pay. We had offered to leave our information, pay them on paypal, or e-transfer, as we did not think this would be a problem and I had a work meeting to get to. Cape Town management instead told us go to an ATM to pay them and would not accept any other way. The ATM that they suggested we go to is the exact ATM that ate my credit card just two days before, so I was very uncomfortable to use it there again. Additionally this ATM would cost me 15 extra USD all due to the fact their card machine broke. As a solution, the Cape Town management forced one of their waiters to walk us through the town to a dark alley where there was a random man with four different card readers. We felt very uncomfortable using our cards at this location as we were unsure of its legitimacy and they charged a 7% fee. Thus, we politely refused. We eventually were forced into getting money from the ATM, and paying the 15$ extra fee simply because their card machine was broken and they would not let us have it any other way. Meanwhile, this all took about 45mins to sort out, while our poor driver was stuck waiting outside, and I missed my important work call. So disappointing from a high end restaurant. We understand technological challenges can arise, however the way that Cape Town Management responded was very unprofessional. Their waiter handled it extremely well, and was very accommodating. But, it was very poor customer service and very disgraceful on the on behalf of the management. Long story short, if you are to eat here, make sure to have a lot of cash as even a drink could cost you 20,000tzs and they won’t be accommodating if any certain circumstances occur.

On arrival, the restaurant was very busy . The only seating available for 2 people was at the back in a room with no atmosphere. We took it as I really wanted to eat there. I had the local fish grilled in lemon butter. My husband had fish and chips . We also had a starter. It was all ok nothing special . I actually thought the seafood was better at our hotel. That said we had good service and a really nice waiter. If we had sat outside I’m sure the average food would have tasted better.

We just wanted a couple of glasses of wine , to relax , enjoy the view and savour the sunshine . We had a nice welcome , we’re shown to a table & given a menu. Our wine was brought by a friendly lady . We weren’t “ hassled “ when our glasses were almost empty but politely asked if we would like another. Of course !!! So we had the menu back & tried a different wine . The prices were very reasonable. We didn’t eat anything but saw many platters & plates being delivered to customers. These all did look great , especially the fish ones . Bill was bought when we asked , really good service. Would recommend this restaurant.

We decided to have lunch here after not being able to go to Robbins Island. The weather caused the ferries to be cancelled. It was pouring rain. In order to get out of the rain, we found the nearest restaurant. What a great find. The service was impeccable. The food was simply delicious. The location on the water front added to the ambience of the setting even though it was raining. We had a great experience and would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting the water front in Cape Town.
