This is the best Chinese (Cantonese) restaurant in Capetown . The chef was originally from Canton, China and has excellent cooking skills . The fresh abalone dinner we had was one of the best that I have tasted, including Hong Kong and China.

The best har gown (steamed prawn dumpling) this side of the Yangtze River! Chef Jackie has perfected the tricky art of wrapping a succulent prawn in a translucent skin that bursts with sublime flavours at first bite. His char siu bow (barbecued pork bun) is...superb! Welcome back Aunty Mary! You have liberated our taste buds after three years of cuisine lockdown. Friendly service from Shalom, our charming waitress.More

This is not the first time we dined here. We came as a family, 11 people in all, all our dishes were served not to having to wait long. We ordered a mix of 9 dishes or so. All freshly made, not oily, and very...tasty! I very much liked the crispy beef! The pak choi not soggy. We highly recommend this restaurant if you’d like to eat authentic Chinese dishes. Will definitely be back again.More

Ah Choy… ? It means Bean Sprouts, IF one's pronunciation is correct! Ours was, but it was not a Hong Kong style restaurent! It was western Chinese, we were told! My wife decided to order some spring rolls, but did not expect to have about...1 kilo of veggies in each spring roll! These did! I ordered a House Special Fried Rice (not on the menu!) What came was a fried rice dish, with many, but not all the ingredients I was hoping for!. Upon asking the poor harassed waitress (because the place was filling up rapidly - which is often a good sign as to quality of an Oriental type restaurant) why certain items were absent, she informed me that the many regions of China vary in their reditions or recipes of certain dishes. Mine looked appetizing, but the amount was sufficient to feed a family of about 20 or so it seemed! The flavour was very pleasant, even with the 'missing' ingredients from what I expected. We drank water with ice, which for me is about the best liquid to drink with the meal. We did not stay very long, but the place filled to almost capacity, keeping our waitress very busy, who even came over two times to aplogise for the length of time our meal took to deliver. Her sevice was excellent! Often, the best way to determine the quality of an Asian or Oriental restaurant is to see how many ethnic people visit… this place housed most of China - or so it seemed!!! A good recommendation. For authetic Asian and Chinese cuisine, this place will do it! BTW- the restaurant used to be called the "Dynasty," but recently changed its name… I do not know if it changed hands or simply re-named itself, but very much worth a visit. I even had a gentleman on the sdmall table fpor 2 behind me, order the same dish I had, as he said he like the look of it (and the amount). He was South African, rather than Asian or Oriental ethnicityl Not expensive, either! Go and try it out.More

Tonight was the 2nd time we have had dinner here within a week. We did not make a booking either time. We found the service to be good and did not feel unwelcome. The food is fantastic and the prices very reasonable. You must try...the crispy beef. The restaurant is basic, so if you are looking for fine-dining, perhaps try elsewhere. If you are, however, looking for really good, authentic food at a reasonable price, this is your place.More

Busloads of Asian tourists pour into this large venue on a daily basis. The staff are the rudest you will even encounter and you are unlikely to be welcomed. We have tried a few times, since it seems as if the food is very authentic...but...you will just get told to leave.More

We did not receive the friendliest welcome at the door. It also doesn't help that you then are never sure where to sit.

As some other reviewers have highlighted the restaurant is pretty basic but the food is really good, the portions generous and the prices reasonable. A highlight was the duck spring roll starter which really were excellent: the chicken chow mein was really good too.

It is not only the food that makes a dining experience and at Tao Yuan this was part of the problem. The food was good. The restaurant was full of Chinese tour bus visitors who seemed to be having a good time toasting each other....The noise and vibration from the buses could not be ignored. The atmosphere and with that the decor and cleanliness was all a bit shabby and scruffy. Tables were not cleared for ages and right next to our table we looked at dirty dishes being attacked by flies. We nearly left but decided to stick it out and test the food. This was good and fresh. But we are still on the hunt for a good chinese Restaurant with no msg, oil spray vapours, really good food and a nice ambience.More

This is my first time having provided a view on TripAdvisor for a restaurant...... I was so moved by the state of the food, I feel I have to warn people. DO NOT VISIT! This was quite possible one of the worst meals I have...ever had. The meat - if that's what they can call it - was like sponge. Completely void of flavor. The rice was stodgy and full of MSG. And the soup was completely tasteless. A complete rip off. I wouldn't even feed my dog this stuff!More

We ordered won ton soup, black pepper beef, special fried rice and honey glazed pork. Each dish was prepared using fresh ingredients and was full of flavour. Quality of meat and dumplings was very good, better than most chinese restaurants I've tried around Cape Town....Our waitress advised us on what to choose and what portion size to select. She was very friendly. Food did take a little longer than expected to arrive, but tasted as if it had been freshly prepared. I'd love to go back and try their crispy chicken next time. The only real disappointment was that they do not serve any desserts. Decor could do with some work and the restaurant could be a little more tidy. But these are minor issues. Prices were a little higher, but it's justified by the good quality and fresh ingredients. 10% Service charge is added to the bill.More

We were craving authentic Chinese food for weeks then found this jem on our holiday right next door to where we were staying. Starters were a selection of their dumpling appetizers and they were fantastic. Mains were just as good! Seafood chow mein and garlic...ribs. Wow. Wow. Wow! Will definitely go back when in the area again. We were the only table there that night and we got great service.gMore

Was so in the mood for great Chinese food as well as an informal spot for dinner. A mistake that was already felt once entering. There is no ambience. Decor is tacky. The restaurant is dirty. The waitress was tired of life and most important...of all the food was just allright. My local Chinese take away on the corner serves tastier meals and theirs are with a smile.More
