After seeing a review of some of the most recommended restaurants in Cape Town, my husband made a booking and paid the deposit. Before we left, I looked at the Tripadvisor reviews - some recent ones so poor, we entered the restaurant with heavy hearts....Thankfully, we had excellent service and food. We took a special bottle of Shiraz along, which they allowed at a reasonable BYO. (Their wine list is small, with no Shiraz, which we love.) Our waiter was very helpful in assisting us with the choices and the food was special. Certainly well worth the visit!More

This restaurant was recommended to us, so we had some expectations. When we reserved we were asked to come early because of the crowd. In fact, during our supper the place was not very busy. The decoration of the restaurant is nice and peaceful, unfortunately...the sushi were good but in no way exceptionnals, the tuna tartare was very ordinary. The only surprise came from the bill which was quite expensive for what we had in our plates. We love japanese restaurant but this was not a good experience.More

When we arrived, Samson was a very attentive and friendly server. However, there was a shift change and it all went downhill. The food is good, however the service let's them down.Firstly, they tried to pass regular beef as wagyu and thought we wouldn't notice....A few items were supposedly not available, but we only found out after waiting for ages. The final straw was that they did not bother to inform us that they had no change and we had to ask them so that we could tip the parking assistant. Most establishments in Cape Town cannot hide their racism.More

My partner and I decided to spend our Anniversary Dinner at Kyoto Garden. Their Wine Menu was impressive and had a bottle of the Ataraxia Chardonnay which was divine with the food. We had 2x starters - Japanese Style Tender Abalone and YellowTail Ceviche. Both...starters where phenomenal and can highly recommend it. We then moved to Mains+sides and had the Steamed Kabeljou Fish in Bamboo Pot and The Sauté - Tofu, Oysters, Scallops, Mushrooms, Prawns,Octopus & Langoustine with sides of Rice with Salmon Roe & Shitake Mushrooms and Japanese Vegetables. The Mains where delicious as well. For desert we had Green Tea Crêpe with Green Tea Ice Cream… delightful. Overall it was a fantastic experience and well worth a visit.More

Had some family arrive from UK and the word Sushi came up. Now having some bad experience in the past it was decided to go authentic and pay a little extra. I can only say money well spent. Yes it was a a little more...in price than we expected but the Abalone, and the Crayfish was really fresh. They showed me the crayfish still moving, A seating of four people and we paid a little over 4000 ZAR. Ice cold beers in a frosted glass, no need for ice as the wine was chilled. Our waitress went out of her way to help us and we felt right at home from the word go. As for the cocktails we were taken back by the Kyoto Cosmo and something called the Ginger Misuwari. Thankyou to the barman who was well educated in his trade. Scott the owner gave us interesting facts about his products and even got us to have some fine Authentic Japanese Whisky. I was blown away and will be sure to visit again on my next trip.More

From the start we had the feeling of being in a John Cleese sketch. And an expensive one at that. As soon as we sat down the waiter told us to hurry. The place was empty but “fully booked”. He appeared stressed out and was...clearly disappointed when we ordered only one (expensive) sashimi / sushi platter. The owner appeared and asked us whether we were finished with a certain bowl “because he needed it elsewhere”. Etc. The slapstick ended abruptly when the bill came. 40 euros for two small carafes of sake. The explanation: “sake is very hard to come by these days…”. The gesture to take one carafe off the bill came suspiciously fast. In short… unless you enjoy an expensive farce - stay away.More

This was by far the worst dining experience I had in the last few years, I ended up laughing about the end because I had the feeling that I was part of a sketch. Waitress didn’t know anything. Didn’t knew the difference between mcc and...champagne. Then, we ordered three types of oysters. They were all the same, when we asked her about it she said that they changed it so now they are all the same. Then, we ordered the sashimi plate and missed two type of fish that were on the menu. With a lot of hassle they gave us the missing fish. When we ordered that same dish again the same fish was again missing. When we asked it again, we received the answer that it wasn’t a part of the dish…. ?!? At the end we also received the wrong bill, with all kinds of dishes on it we didn’t ate. I’m a real sushi lover and I love high quality sushi. Maybe in SA the quality of sushi is lower then in Europe, I don’t know.. but what we received was the most boring plain sushi ever. Even for take out sushi I wouldn’t order such simple sushi, what a joke. And then the prices, what a tourist trap. Please please please, don’t waste your time over there. Really a joke.More

Extremely over priced and poor service. Will not recommend. Owner very friendly and passionate, but prices really high. Table next to us left because of slow service. Small glass of MCC cocktail at R250 was not a good start.

Shocking service and dreadful expensive food. When booking one has to pay a deposit of R200pp. Don’t mind that at all for a good experience. However we had to go and look for a waiter. When asked for a wine list he said he will...fetch it: then comes back and says he is the wine list. We are in Cape Town and they only have one merlot at R390 on the list. Oysters 3 ways at R150 lands up being plain oysters (which they then concocted a story about being from 3 different places after I asked). Very limited sushi menu - made badly. Don’t waste your time or moneyMore

Only 1 star because I could’ve give it zero. Not at all what the website and good reviews make it out to be! Don’t go here. There are so many better priced, good restaurants in Cape Town. Rather find a place with good service and...good food. Kyoto Gardens is a waste of money.More
