Chef's Anouchka Horn and Neil Swart. We offer a tasting menu for lunch and dinner in our 30 seater restaurant. There are no menu options or set amount of courses. All you do is show up and trust us to satisfy with our seasonal fare. We source from local sustainable producers and use every part of the animal. Went as a party of four. And had four delighted patrons. We went for supper and were presented with 5/6 courses of smallish but very adequate sized tasting dishes. The food was exactly to my taste with the right amount of flavours in each dish. Nothing was over the top, "show-offy", even though each dish is presented in a fine dining way. I don't usually eat steak tartare but the gemsbok tartare was superb. The menu changes monthly I believe, with modifications daily depending on availability. I loved the low key environment and service which focused on delivering good food. My one criticism is that the restaurant was very warm. The fans just weren't cutting it and made the experience kind of uncomfortable. Unfortunately the windows couldn't stay open because the South Easter was blowing a gale. The wines are pricey, starting at around R300 per bottle, but at least they are unusual and varied. The corkage is R80 and you are limited to one bottle per 5 persons. I would highly recommend this little restaurant for the food taste, the variety of tasting dishes, the service and for trying wine that is not some of the 'big names'. (And I just want to say that I could eat a loaf of their sourdough bread.)

This is one of my favorite meals EVER!. (Just to put in context, I would choose this restaurant over the French Laundry in Napa,CA, or Alinea in Chicago. I put it right up there with De Kas in Amsterdam) The dishes are prepared with such expertise and subtlety that you can distinguish and appreciate every ingredient in the very intricate preparations. What a delight!! My mouth waters just remembering the meal. It is prix fixe menu. Farm to table with emphasis on not letting anything go to waste. They start accepting reservations at the beginning of the previous month and fill up very rapidly, so be attentive. We were slightly unfortunate that we couldn't enjoy wine with our meal because of the COVID-19 pandemic. I can't even imagine how the meal could have been any better.

Booked in advance as they are so busy due to only dining 30 diners at any one given time. We were a little apprehensive to begin with but once we arrived, were seated and then greeted by the waiters and chefs personally, we were absolutely blown away by the quality of food and service. Please note it is a blind tasting menu so you do not order food, it is simply brought to you every 15/20 minutes by the staff. Each dish is unique to South Africa and cooked fresh on the day and you are even explained every single ingredient that has gone into it. Honestly there are not enough superlatives to describe this restaurant and i can only say it is the best we have eaten at WORLDWIDE. Will definitely be booking again when next in Cape Town.

This is certainly a different type of restaurant! It's a set taster menu, where you can't choose but the chef and kitchen staff select the dishes. There's also a vegetarian option, which is what we had. All the food is beautifully presented, with a lovely and delicate variety of different tastes and flavours. Waiting staff were all so polite and warm, and although they were obviously busy they all looked happy. Even the head chef took his turn at serving food, which was a nice touch. I think Belly of the Beast was the best meal we had in our two weeks in South Africa. Highly recommended, don't miss it! By the way, it gets booked up way in advance and the restaurant only opens the book for reservations a month in advance, so be sure to contact them in good time to book a table.

We were a party of five. We were treated to a 6 course tasting meal, excluding 2 amuse-bouche and a palate cleanser. Each course was presented beautifully and cooked to perfection. The service is very professional and efficient, with all staff presenting the food explaining each of the ingredients on the plate. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. Well done to chefs Neil and Anouchka for a memorable evening

Not being a regular fine dining client, we were slightly nervous as to what the atmosphere would be like given our relaxed and casual nature. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the restaurant is elegant, relaxed, non pretentious and welcoming to all types of diners wanting to embark on a special culinary adventure. The restaurant is intimate but somehow makes you feel like you are in your own world. The serving staff were attentive without being obtrusive. They knew exactly when to be professional and when to crack a joke to make the overall experience that much more enjoyable. As far as the food goes. This exceeded our expectations although we didn't really come with any. Each course which included about 4 additional surprise courses, captivated the flavours of South Africa's diverse culture. Perfectly balanced, packed with flavour and elegantly presented. The portion sizes were perfect and left you always wanting a little bit more but more than satisfied with what you received. Value for money can not be debated. Being 6ft6, I left the restaurant more than full and best of all, with memories that will last a life time. We cannot wait for our next visit and to share in the experience again.

"Belly....” is one of the best! Yes, it’s fine dining but, it’s relaxed and generous. 5 prescribed courses, more like 7, with mis en bouche etc, unless you have dietary requirements. There's a useful wine list and the meal is well paced, no looking to turn tables, make it a very comfortable experience. It’s about the taste over the look, and it looks great! Service is good, you meet the patrons/chefs, it’s not in the least pricey, less than R600 ph and you’ll do well to find much that’s better.

Belly of the Beast is one of my favourite "Fine Dining" experience restaurants in Cape Town. The idea is to arrive and be surprised by the Chef's selection of several unusual courses they have created from what can be found in season locally. Every food group is covered, but arrangements can be made for allergies or dietary requirements. The restaurant ethos is to support local, small farms, and the meat is sourced ethically and responsibly. The ambiance of the restaurant is relaxed, but close attention has been paid to decor and design. This is a restaurant that pays attention to detail and always delivers exceptional quality. Lastly, you won't leave hungry! Every course is generous, and (pro tip) DO pace yourself!

We heard about this restaurant while on a safari in the Timbavati Reserve by another couple who had dined there prior to the safari. You do have to pay a deposit in advance with your reservation, but that is not uncommon for popular restaurants. The fact we did not know what the menu would be was part of the experience that we were looking forward to. Unlike a reviewer just previous to this review, we found the restaurant to be exceptionally clean and did not see anything to make us believe otherwise. We did the optional wine pairing with the food as well. One word of caution, they have two choices for wine pours and we did the larger one. Our server tried to warn us that it was a lot of wine, but we did not listen! The food was spectacular and every dish was a culinary treat, expertly paired with the wine. We loved every aspect of our dinner here. As far as the neighborhood was concerned, it was no different than any in this area in Cape Town. We took Uber there and back and we did not experience any issues. It is pricey, but we knew that going in. We also knew the menu changes and we looked forward to not knowing what the menu would be in advance. When you arrive, they have the menu for the day posted, so you do know what you will be served. Overall we found our dinner and experience here worth the visit and would go back should we ever find ourselves in Cape Town in the future!

We had an amazing evening at Belly of the Beast. The food was Devine. The restaurant had a great ambience. Seating everyone together means that the room gets very busy very quickly, so you never feel on display, however tables are spaced considerately apart and so you have the privacy and intimacy you need. We went as a couple to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. We loved the music choice which was more rocky than you usual restaurant schmaltz, but not at a volume which meant it was not intrusive. As for the food, it was beautifully prepared, presented and explained, with Anouchka herself bringing out many of the courses. She took the time to all to each and every table and at the end of the evening she gave us a jar of her family recipe chutney which we are going to save for our Christmas Dinner cheese course. We booked the restaurant last minute as being British, we didn’t actually believe that we were going to be able to go, and had to admit, our 1st choice restaurant was closed for a private party. We were certainly not disappointed by the alternative!

Made to feel right at home from the get go. Started with delightful amuse bouche and continued leisurely through another, six or seven, creative courses. Highly recommend going with friends to share this experience since it's 6:30 to roughly 9:30. Chef (and owners) dropped by our table four times and never felt rushed. Very slick operation. Calm, open kitchen. Menu changes monthly. Book early for one of the twenty seats! You won't regret it,

Chef’s Anoushka and Niel have created an unique dining experience like no other in Cape Town. Their romantic small restaurant ensure they have personal interaction with their customers. I can honestly say dining at the Belly of the Beast is the best dining experience I had in South Africa. Its only a matter of time before they will receive an Michelin star. This is definitely a amazing fine dining experience.

As someone who likes food but hasn't really done fine dining, I was a bit apprehensive about lunch at Belly of the Beast. I expected high quality ingredients and good cooking, but was less sure that I would personally like the food and the atmosphere. I need not have worried: our lunch was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The atmosphere was relaxed and casual, with no hint of stuffiness. The food was of course well prepared, but also very accessible: I liked everything I was served. Some of the dishes I've never had before, like the chicken parfait with orange marmelade. Others were crowd pleasers, like the carpaccio with tomatoes and rocket salad. Both were great. I didn't order any wine, but went with the lager on tap instead, and it went very well with all of the dishes. To anyone who enjoys good food, but is a bit hesitant about fine dining, I recommend the Belly of the Beast as an excellent options to try it out.

Go here if you can get a reservation. Small plates but each had wonderful flavors and were very creative. Interesting concept you don’t order they just bring out the small plates sans any food restrictions you have. We were also able to bring our own wine and pay a R100 corkage fee.

The most fabulous dining experience we have had for a very long time! We travelled from London and work in hospitality ourselves and we wanted an extra special multi course dinner. Belly of the Beast delivered above and beyond. The food was interesting, creative and delicious and we opted to go for the paired wines to match. What a treat! Everything was explained in detail and we learned about some interesting new wine making styles. In fact the service was so bespoke and attentive that we were presented with an information sheet on the wine that we had shown interest in (I had told my husband we should do more research on it and it appeared by magic!) I feel strongly that I’d like to address the previous review by “Going Somewhere”. As hospitality people who have felt the affect of the pandemic closing our businesses I think it is disgusting that someone would write such a damaging and untrue review and publish it to the world. How dare they do such potential damage to a business merely based on their own ill- educated style preference. I fully support (and applaud) the owners response and urge those visiting Cape Town to visit Belly of the Beast to experience true hospitality and culinary artistry. Bravo!
