This restaurant was a real mixed bag, it was highly recommended by a friend but didn’t live up to the recommendation. We entered the restaurant to find the manager and staff arguing in front of all the customers with a customer 😩 which wasn’t the best start and very unprofessional. We waited ages to be offered drinks and even longer for our food order to be taken. The service was very poor, the restaurant wasn’t very busy about 30% capacity. After 40 minutes food arrived and it was average, I’ve eaten in a lot of Indian restaurants over the years and this wasn’t one of the best unfortunately. The atmosphere was loud and not your typical restaurant atmosphere, there was a table of six sat by that was overly loud and drown out everyone else in the restaurant, they seemed like regulars and was left to act as they pleased which ruined it over everyone else. I would recommend possibly trying at lunch time as it may be less rowdy and noisy. I wouldn’t visit again as I think there are better restaurants with better service and food quality in the area.

We have been visiting this establishment since the early 2000s when it was Bukhara. Last month when we visited we ordered off the Awara menu and we enjoyed the food. Tonight we ordered mains off the Haiku menu and it was too salty/spicy (not pungent). Our mains did take long - considering the restaurant was empty. The portions were considerable. Starters: Papdi chaat (R49) and Prawn toasts (R124) Mains: Singapore Chilli prawns R299 and the Spicy chilli lamb R184, egg fried rice R40 We got there around 6, and there were only two other tables there, one left about 20m into us being there. The patrons walked out without masks. It’s the restaurant’s responsibility to make their patrons feel “safe” and this means advising patrons that masks must be worn from their table to the exit. No one should be allowed in without a mask - because people talk as they walk to their table. A couple walked in as we were leaving - the man wasn’t wearing a mask. That’s a criminal offense. Our waiter was very good. The look and feel of the restaurant is lovely.

We recently had lunch at Awara Restaurant on Church Street in central Cape Town, and can happily report that the current dining experience is better than ever. Awara is the recent reincarnation of Bukhara, which for over 20 years served some of the best Indian food on the planet outside of India itself. Located in the former Bukhara's same first floor location overlooking leafy Greenmarket Square, but with a refreshed dining room decor, Awara has added creative and complex Asian-style "tapas" to its old Indian triumphs. The dining room is presided over by Johan with effortless grace, and the current head chef Rakesh is carrying on the traditions of Bukara with aplomb. Rakesh's version of chicken chettinad is astonishingly as good if not better than the version of this classic dish that we had in this same space a decade ago. Kudos to the current Awara team for maintaining its impeccable standards for dining excellence. Even with the proliferation of new post-Covid Cape Town restaurants, the new Awara towers above.

Was at Bukhara/Haiku in Cape Town CBD in Burg/Church street. As Bukhara is undergoing renovation we were seated at Haiku with limited food from Bukhara menu being served. We ordered Dal Makhani and Butter Chicken. Was shocked to see that they served both items in such small tiny vessels that is barely enough for a single person serving. The amount charged was full charge ! It was clear that the place lost it when I saw the size of the nan. It was smaller than a chapati. No Indian restaurant in the world serves such small nan.

Really poor quality north Indian food...ordered a delivery and the Rogan Josh was a shocker....absolute shocking attempt at a dish that is an Indian classic. The Rogan Josh soup that was served had a few strands of noodles in it ......crazy

One of the best Indian restaurants I’ve ever been to! Chef Rakesh (WOW) went out of his way to make us a North Indian style Prawn curry and every dish tastes like it’s right from india ! A special shout out to Kyle the host who took care of us on the 1st of Jan night on a very busy night where they were short staffed but never let us feel it for a second! and our server Lloyd knew every dish on the menu. No is never an answer here. This restaraunt needs many more people coming forward to put thier ratings as it’s common knowledge amongst the city how great the food and service is ! Best dishes are the: Chicken lababdar Gunpowder calamari. Great for veg food too!

Dinner at Awara CBD / Bukhara venue. Beautiful flavours, well presented, service good. We had Murg lababdar (chicken) and nihari gohst (lamb) grill veg kebab (brocolli mushroom) butter naan steamed rice. Accompanied by a bottle of morgenhof chenin (jordan chardonnay was out of stock). Recommended 👍🏽 The Industrial chic design, glass, lack of soft furnishings means high noise levels though... 👎🏾

Oh my goodness! Amazing food. A must if you enjoy Indian cuisine. Seriously good food. The chef made us a sensational garlic rice which was off menu. Try the prawn palak papdi chat..... never had it before but thoroughly enjoyed. We have a top 10 of Indian restaurants. Awara is likely to make it into the top 5. Rio is a great guy.

Our main man Dexter let us have the pleasure of experiencing the most delicious cuisine of our visit. The generous portions were more than enough to fully satisfy us and the flavours were perfectly spiced and seasoned. Dexter was an amazing waiter who provided us with everything and more. Thanks for the wonderful experience. Will definitely be visiting again!😍

Tasty food, lovely cocktails, great customer services. We are vegetarians and the waiter (Brendan) gave great suggestions of things on the menu that could be modified for us. All staff were very friendly. Would definitely come again.

Had a lovely evening at Awara. Food was delicious and our waiter was great. Only reason for not scoring 5/5 is that it is pricey for locals…especially the wine list! One or 2 more reasonable bottles of wine would be great. Would also have liked the tasting menu which was advertised when we booked, but was not available on our visit. Food really was delicious but hoped for a bit more of an experience for the price e.g tasting menu

Based on previous good reviews we decided to eat at Awara even though we were staying at the Taj Hotel and could have eaten there ( we ate there on our last pre Covid visit ) We were completely blown away by the food served to us at Awara. We love Indian style food and all meals for 4 of us were truly wonderful and very generous portions ( so much so that we couldn’t manage to quite finish what was served, sorry, wish we could have taken what was left away with us ! ) Thank you for the chefs and serving staff who compliment everything about this restaurant we also thank the restaurant / security who very kindly walked with us back to the Taj Hotel even though it was only a short distance away. A great place to enjoy wonderful flavours of India !

What an absolutely wonderful experience it was. The variety of Asian dishes, from Thailand to India to Korea to Japan... it was a gastronomical delight! Every dish was perfectly prepared, served with such kindness, by our very knowledgable waitron. I'll definitely be back! Awara has managed to create a menu that appeals to everyone. I'm so impressed and love how they've managed to execute such an amazing Asian fusion menu, so perfectly!

We have been to so many Indian restaurants all over the world but Bukhara is by far our favorite since tonight! The Indian tapas is so delicious...Dexter our waiter made the experience even better by explaining how all dishes were made, and how tho combine the dishes to have the best experience. Excellent service! Please allow yourself the best culinair gift in Cape Town!

I arrived that day after 20+ hours of travel, and was looking for a great meal. Awara exceeded my expectations. The service was great and the food was exceptional. We enjoyed appetizers recommended by the server; one chicken and one beef and they were outstanding. As my main course I had lamb curry and it was some of the best I’ve had anywhere in the world. We concluded our meal with homemade mango ice cream, which was heavenly The atmosphere, service, and food are all excellent. I highly recommend you visit Awara. I plan to go back again before my trip is over
