My husband and I decided to have a burger. We saw this restaurant and thought we would try it as a change. We both had a burger. For R 144 my cheese burger was very below average. I was most disappointed. The patty was underwhelming and the sauce awful. My husband expressed his opinion to the Manager. It seemed obvious that this restaurant caters for tourists not locals. Perhaps the steaks are better.

Fantastic cuts of steak, great service,affordable (in UK terms)

Happened upon this restaurant amongst the sea of ones in the area. Very pleasantly surpised. Service (by Charles) was excellent and attentive without being intrusive. We had a Chateua Briand and a Steak Diane,with an inexpensive bottle of Merlot (only 200 Rand!) a fabulous mohito and a side all for around £36 Inc a decent tip.

My family and I went walking around the V&A Waterfront and walked past a few restaurants looking at all the menus to decide on where to eat for dinner. While looking at City Grill's menu, one of the most friendly waiters came to us, assisted us and just had a good conversation with us. He made us a promise that if we came back later, he would guarantee that we could cut our steaks with a butter knife, and if not we should not tip him... We thought he was joking. Later that evening we settled on City Grill for dinner, just because of the warmth we felt earlier from the entire staff. So we took Charles R on with his bet, and no kidding we cut that steak with a butter knife. The food was amazing, the service was marvelous and the vibes were happening. Thank you to Charles R and his team for their excellent service.

My wife and I chose two different starters, Mine was Tempura Prawns. All four were soggy and horrible. My wife chose Chicken Caesar Salad. A sloppy load of chicken in lettuce leaves, unlike any Caesar we have eaten anywhere else in the world. Horrible!!! In fairness, these inedible starters were removed from our bill. For Mains , we ordered Steak Diane, ( not made at the table ). The meal was served luke warm verging on cold. The fillet steak would have been good but for the temperature. The potatoes were OK, But the rest was awful. Again, unrecognisable as a Steak Diane. We will not be revisiting . Other guests seem happy enough though. Perhaps they don’t travel much. Personally I would rename City Grill with different first letters suggest S H

Although we welcome any form of feedback be it positive or negative, we do not appreciate vicious, unfounded attacks on either us, or our other patrons. City Grill has been in operation for 24 years and we have always had a great reputation when it comes to the quality of our food and service. In these 24 years we have always proudly served locals and tourists alike, with many tourists returning year after year, funny enough for dishes such as the Steak Diane, and locals returning on a daily basis. Lovely place for a meal.

We really enjoyed everything about this restaurant. I chose a lovely fillet steak with pepper sauce and mash and it was propee comfort food, really enjoyed it. My wife had chicken in a mushroom sauce and mash and was also very pleased with her meal. All members of staff were so polite and helpful and we enjoyed a few glasses of wine to accompany the food. I always feel that the best restaurant experience benefits from having a visual front of house manager, things always tend to run much more smoothly and you have a direct contact should things go wrong ( at times every restaurant makes the odd mistake). The manager at City Grill actually helped my wife with her phone when trying to book a Uber back to Camps Bay, he was a very pleasant man who obviously runs a very efficient and hard working team at City Grill. I can thoroughly recommend a visit, it ticks every box. Thank you.

Underwhelming and overpriced

I took my boyfriend out for a birthday lunch and we decided on City Grill. I ordered the Guacamole burger, which wasn't bad but it's something I feel like could've made at home. My boyfriend had the calamari which was incredibly overpriced for the quality, portion, and flavor. I also ordered the kiwi mojito which was a combination of syrupy, overly sweet, blandness. Service was good though but I won't be returning.

Absolutely terrible. Went there last year and really enjoyed the food and service so thought would go again. Meat was not cooked properly, sent back and even the return was nasty. Meat had a unpleasant smell and taste. In fact my partner has been put off meat and feels nauseous. One also couldn’t complain about the service Clearing of table etc as there was not any. Will never go back unfortunately nor can I recommend it . Anyway that’s our experience and am sure there are many opinions and probably some good ones. Just not ours today.

I Googled the best steak in V/A Waterfront. Google sent me here. It took me 10 minutes and two waiters to order a bottle of wine from the wine list. After about an hour the Maîtresse D stood 20 meters from me and gestured with a thumbs-up whether I’m OK. Not being OK I tried to gesture to her. She walked over and when I told her I don’t appreciate her sending me hand signs, she turned around and walked away. No owner’s presence, I’ll never come back. I haven’t eaten yet, but I’m not hungry anymore.

We booked here for one of our last night's in Cape Town. The ambiance of the restaurant is lovely; however, that's where anything positive about this restaurant stops. The staff were very slow, when we asked about the aged steak, and types of steaks our waitress had to get get some advice, and when she returned said they were basically all the same but aged for a long time. The food was awful. The steaks were tough, and not cooked how we asked. Our waitress disappeared as soon as the food was put down. The manager asked us how the food was as soon as the waitress left so we didn't know the food was as bad as it was at that point to tell her either. What kind of manager asks customers how the food is before they even taste it?! This place was not cheap either, cost more than a lot of other restaurants, but go elsewhere and avoid this place... better quality and servie at Wimpy or McDonald's!

Staff super friendly, very helpful, great wines, even with sommelier Had beef fillet / rice / garlic butter / grilled vegetables twice. Add a beer, a coke and a wonderful red wine. Together 45 euros. Food was. Perfect - taste and cooking level perfect. Highly recommended!!

Uninterested staff. Free tiny pieces of corn bread, hard and dry. Strawberry daiquiri was good. We ordered vegetable soup. It was sour and had the impression it was off. Next was the springbok loin for R299. It came in thin slices with a sweet sauce that doesn’t match. Way overcooked, tough and dry. Is this a steak house? Sh...y grill is the name. Stay away, waste of money. They should be ashamed.

Lunch in the sunshine overlooking the harbour with Table Mountain in the background - my idea of heaven! What could go wrong? ..,Nothing! Our waitress was charming, very attentive & service was excellent Our food - prawn curry & chateaubriand were both beautifully presented & were excellent. Price was a little higher than some places however considering location we found it to be good value
