We really felt like authentic thai food as my partner is from Thailand. Having been terribly disappointed at Simply Asia Umhlanga Gateway the night before we decided to eat at Kung Thai.
We had Som Tum papaya salad which was original Thai and delicious with good fish sauce. Order it "pet pet" if you really want it spicy.
The grilled whole line fish with basil sauce made us feel like we were in Thai heaven.
The wine selection is small but good. We had the Meerlust Rubicon which went well with the food.
The owner is very knowledgeable and attentive, the waitress was extremely helpful and the chef was on point.

The restaurant has moved from Umhlanga to about 10 km away towards Durban. I am glad that we drove the extra kilos as the food were well worth the drive. The new adress is on google maps.

This place was OK and did offer happy hour special drink prices which helps if you are on a budget. Food was good, but the place was a bit empty - there is a lot of competition around here! The owner was very nice and helped with the menu. Yes I would go back again when I visit the area again.

Love this place. The food is always so good. Just love their Beach Garden Salad with crispy spinach. And love the way they have modified the menu to serve Thai Tapas.

We went for drinks on Saturday and ended up eating. There is no other way. The aroma of each passing dish is irresistible. They also had live music, which was great. The food was unbelievable and the waiter, as well as the owner were super entertaining. I highly recommend this place.

If you love Thai food then this is your one stop Thai spot in Durban! It's an ideal people watching spot in Umhlanga Village with charismatic waiters and owners bearing the biggest smiles.
Kit and Nina have added to their Thai menu in the most authentic Thai way possible.
This evening we took the recommendation of Kit and had a small calamari starter to share called Kung Thai Calamari. Divine!
We wanted a salad so decided to try the Thai style Green Papaya Salad which was delicious but hot as hell!
Main course was Thai Style Fried Fish with peppers and spicy sauces... I literally had to fight my partner for pieces of it as every piece was eaten with gusto and delight! No joke, this was Kit's recommendation and was fantastic as a meal to share with a bowl of egg fried rice. Perfection at it's best!
For dessert Kit kindly surprised us chilli chocolate sauce and crisp banana slices drizzled with honey and nuts. It was paired with ice cream and a crispy fried batter that was a perfect way to end the evening.
I can't stress enough that this is Thai style food at it's best in Durban but don't take just my word for it... Try it and try it soon 😎

We had a range of menu items and everything was very tasty: pad Thai, honey chicken, duck spring rolls, rice paper wraps etc. We had arrived fairly late and had to have our starters and mains very close together as the kitchen was closing at 9 so better to go earlier!

In our brief stop over in Durban while on a South African trip, we ate dinner in Kung Thai, mainly based on the feedback of previous TripAdvisor reviewers.
When we went in, we were a bit skeptical because there were no Asian faces in the waiting or kitchen staff. But we decided to put our fellow TripAdvisors to the test.
It turned out the food was authentically good. We had a steam fish with Thai sauce (ZAR280), soft-shelled crab pan-fried with Chiangmai sauce (ZAR 220), red curry prawn (ZAR190), grilled calamari, pad Thai and papaya salad. The steam fish was really good and fresh. The pad Thai was tasty. All the sauces were well made and tasted authentic Thai. The only disappointment was the crab. While the sauce was excellent, the crabs was cooked from frozen - a bit mushy, shells semi-hard and not much meat. The prawns were actually the size of small shrimps.
All in all, we were quite satisfied with our meal. With beer, the dinner cost us ZAR200 per person.

Just off a very long flight and ended up here by chance. We loved the food, the waiter was extremely helpful in helping us choose complementary dishes and the owner kindly gave us advice on our travel plans. He even lent us a book on the area and we look forward to returning it to him before we leave and enjoying our final meal in S.A. at Kung Thai.

We tried both types af crab and it was amazing. The Thai flavours were captured perfectly. The service and food makes this a worthwhile experience even though the restaurant at first glance seems very understated.

After reading the mixed reviews on Tripadvisor my husband and I decided to put Kung Thai to the test on Wednesday, 12 April 2017.
We were warmly welcomed by our waiter Simo. He effortlessly made excellent suggestions on the menu when I could not decide what to have.
The menu boasts a wide variety of Thai dishes and we were spoilt with choice. The wine list was very reasonably priced. We had a bottle of Darling Bushvine Sauvignon Blanc which was excellent and well priced at ZAR80.00.
I had the starter crispy calamari which consisted of calamari rings served with roasted peppers, onions and a chilli jam sauce. The chilli jam sauce (homemade)brought the calamari to a bursting flavourful sensation. I also had the Puu CHA which consisted of two prawn and crab donuts with chilli dipping sauce (homemade). The donuts were a taste sensation which brought my taste butts into a passionate tango. It was simply outstanding.
My husband had the Pork Ribs as a main course. The ribs was steamed and coated in a Nina’s special sticky chilli sauce. The ribs were fall off the bone tender and bursting with flavour. He thoroughly enjoyed each bite. He chose vegetables as a side dish. He had to ward me off his bowl of vegetables. It was without a doubt the best vegetables I ever had at any restaurant.
While the venue is more a café style setting, the ambience is relaxed and blend in perfect harmony within the hustle and bustle of the restaurant strip, the main attraction here is the food. Made with passion and love and care. Unpretentious and authentic Thai.
