We stayed in Umhlanga for 2 full weeks and visited this restaurant three times, seemingly it recently opened after COVID . It has a corner setting as you enter Chartwell in Umhlanga village and you have no need to walk any further. The atmosphere is relaxing , there is a pleasant breeze as the windows are slid back and the star of the show is the food.. One of the show stoppers is an oyster fillet, the beef wellington is superb, oysters are fabulous and the sushi as a starter is some of the finest in Durban . The staff were attentive and the bill each night was not overly expensive. So glad that we visited this welcome addition to Umhlanga village.

I came to Steak and Oyster for a meal with work colleagues whilst in Umhlanga. It's a bright, modern restaurant with a great atmosphere and is close to the other restaurants and amenities in the area. The food is excellent, especially the beef rashers for starter. I also had a very good ribeye on the bone, which was one of the best I've had for some time. For UK visitors, it is incredible value for money and you'll get a very good meal / main course for £10+ Highly recommended and will be back!

Great atmosphere and excellent service. Neatly dressed waiters who seemed well trained and knowledgeable about the menu and wines, happy to be there and do their jobs. Desserts were disappointing though, tiny and poor presentation. Otherwise, an excellent restaurant

Rating 2 out of 5 given only because of friendliness of staff, otherwise, should be 0. The interior is nice, and the staff is trying to serve the best the can. Very friendly and accommodating manager. And there it all ends. I've ordered a burger( no reference to the weight in the menu) medium and chips. I was served overcooked well done tiny paty with some horseradish spread on the bun of very poor quality and awful quality chips( not crispy, discoloured). My wife's bake potato was so watery ( don't ask me how it is possible). My daughter's chips were as bad as mine.

Given the variety of fare and good eating spots in South Africa returning to a good restaurant is something that I don’t do unless the food on offer is outstanding. The steak and oyster in Durban is that place for me. The staff are well trained, the vibe is muted yet on trend. It’s a family party, celebratory kind of place. The wines list is awesome, the prices reasonable to exorbitant. The meat on the menu is fabulous, I ordered a chicken livers cooked in a peri peri sauce, a fillet steak with pepper sauce served with ujeqe which is steamed dumpling, but is a South African local dish. My friends had amazing oysters, the biggest, they had ever had in SA and they are oyster lovers. Their rib eye steak and prawns were also met with rave reviews. We finished our meal with Amarula Dom Pedro’s (a thick milkshake). This restaurant is a value for money destination. I don’t mind paying for a good plate of food and this won’t be my last visit.

A new find in Umhlanga. The Steak & Oyster is an interesting find in a sea of options for a meal out. The ambiance is up market and the staff incredibly well trained and finally the food is amazing. It’s the first time in a long time that I have eaten starters, mains and desert at a restaurant. My starter was the most spicy, delicious chicken livers in a creamy based sauce, my dinner mate had beef carpaccio with capers. For mains I had a fillet steak, baked potato and pepper sauce. My dinner mate had rib eye on the bone, sweet potato and butternut mash and for dessert a hot baked date tart and for me a Amarula Dom Pedro. The food was testament to a chef who knows how to cook meat. Try them out sometime.

Ordered a takeaway that did not arrive. Contacted manager who found order in kitchen but state dit was now closed and did not want to send order stating I should cancel on App and ask Uber for a refund. Very suspicious as no attempt made to send food or offer alternate solutions. Would be very reluctant to trust staff based on this experience especially as the person I spoke to was the manager. Note don App that delivery car allocated never left the restaurant. Avoid ordering takeaway from this place especially large orders and if close to restaurant closing times, it is likely that you will not receive your order as it will be kept in kitchen. I am curious as to that the staff did with the order.

We walked past in the afternoon and decided to give the Steak & Oyster a try in the evening. We asked about needing to make a reservation which they recommended. We weren’t sure it would be necessary as we weren’t sure what time we would be ready but decided to do so. We were glad we did book as it was full when we arrived except our reserved table. My wife had a soup, my daughter Carpaccio and I had the Chicken Liver which was quite spicy (the menu did say chilli sauce). We then all had different steaks and all were cooked well. The service was great. Highly recommended.

The food great band our waiter was good. I had ordered a drink and there was a fly at the bottom of the drink. I showed the waiter who called the manager. The manager said there was no way a fly could get into the drinkas the to wings should have dissolved. I was frustrated and dissapointed at his reponse instead of getting a repelent. It just made the expirience bad for me, customer service zero. His name is Decency. He offered another drink after implying that im lying. I told him that Im going to order another one i didnt want a replacement, I was reporting the issue

I visited Steak and Oyster recently on a business trip to Umhlanga. It's a nicely decorated restaurant with a laid back atmosphere. The service was great and the food even better. It offers great value for money compared to equivalent UK restaurants. I had the Beef and Reef for main and the beef bacon to start. Both were really good and very tasty. I'd recommend a visit for anyone in this area!

We did a short stopover in Durban for city tour and Sani Pass before our safari. . We stayed at Protea Hotel adjacent to Steak and Oyster so we decided to drop in for dinner. I had the filet and my husband had the shepherds pie. Being raised in the Midwest beef part of USA I was not sure what to expect. I can only say I had the best filet of my life and am still thinking of it weeks later. The service and ambiance were also very nice. A very memorable evening.

Lovely decor, relaxing environment where we could talk, without shouting, service was very attentive and the food for everyone was excellent in our group we had a mixture of steaks, Kingklip and calamari with some lovely wines I personally liked the Rustenberg Malbec - went down well with the steak.

Brilliant fillet - the dish, with SO signature sauce was excellent. It was cooked to perfection, side salad was delicious and mushroom sauce was a good choice.
