the chicken was overcooked and dry. My coffee was cold and dripping on to the saucer. I used to go very often for lunch and loved the open health sandwich. I think the standards have dropped which is very sad as this was one of...the very few places in town you could get a tasty mealMore
My friend and I visited Elephant and I yesterday after years of not visiting. I had 2 coffees (both were served lukewarm) and my friend ordered a 'chicken schnitzel' - which was the most disgusting looking meal I ever did see - chicken came straight...out the deep fryer as it was drenched in oil and the chips looked like they had been sitting outside for about a week.
I mean seriously - Elephant and I used to be the place to be - serving absolute quality drink and meals - and now? SUCH A disappointment.
Since the new owner has taken over everything has gone downhill. Past experiences resulted in our not going there for a while. Meals incomplete. Meals incorrect. Unnecessarily long wait for meals (at least 1 hour at times). This morning my husband and I decided to...go there again. We ordered our drinks. He is diabetic. They had no sugar free drink for him. We immediately left. I'm afraid we can now be added to the list of those who will never eat there again. In Richards Bay there are better restaurants. I don't recommend you eat at Elephant and I unless you have a lot of patience and are willing to compromise on your meals. The waitrons who remained after the past owner left are probably the only advantage that the restaurant has right now.More
The food took forever! Had to ask for serviettes, had to ask for syrup three times for my daughter to be able to eat her flap jacks with the answer :it's on its way.......really? Our food was eaten halfway before it came. The poor kid...had to wait so long...More
As an Elephant regular (roughly once a week) for the past six years and less frequently for over twenty years, I was somewhat apprehensive when the restaurant was sold and new management took over. Since then, I have eaten three meals there. The first, only...a few days after the new owner took over, was as good as always. The second meal was about a week later; while the service was still great, the phrase 'sunny side up' seemed to be lost in translation and the eggs had to be sent back in order to get soft yolks. Apart from that, all was good. Today, another fortnight down the line, was not a pleasant experience. We waited over 45 minutes for a fried egg breakfast, the fries were then sent back as they were not freshly cooked and had been sitting under the warmer for a while, the mushrooms which are part of the breakfast, failed to arrive and the restaurant ran out of Cole Zero. I was sorry to hear from two of the regular waiters that both had resigned and would be leaving shortly. On listening carefully, I could hear the moo-ing of the cash cow. The traditional two ply toilet paper now a thing of the past, the bottle of Melissa's Chili -Garlic sauce, the last one in the shop, with no replacement scheduled. My wife and I were bitterly disappointing. We have been customers of the restaurant for over twenty years and have seen the love and attention to detail put into it by the two previous owners. We have had special moment's there and to see it being run down so quickly is painful. We will, unfortunately, not be back in a hurry.More
Great situation and a favourite for over a decade, this restaurant now under new ownership needs to take steps to protect it's established reputation. We popped in for some light food before attending a meeting. We allowed just over an hour for burger, sandwich and...soup order for five of us. The drinks were long is materializing and the three fruit juices were served at room temperature, no ice offered. It was really difficult to get the waitresses attention and eventually two of our party had to leave and managed to grab their meals in takeaway containers on their way out. The three remaining at the table had ordered soup which appeared after an hour. Although delicious and generous in portion, the soup was cold and I sent mine back to the kitchen asking for a minute in the microwave. Having stipulated from the outset that we were in a hurry, I went to retrieve my soup from the kitchen myself after ten minutes had passed - the waitress was too busy chatting to other staff for me to get her attention. Perhaps if we were spending more money we would have received better service, but there should not be an excuse for appalling customer care. I hope they address this - maybe it is just in the evenings - and return to the sanctuary offering good food and service we have known in the past.More
