About
Mahā, meaning ‘great soul’, pays homage to the Point Waterfront’s richly diverse history. All-day dining and a la carté offerings. Greeted by a modern, intimate dining space. Exposed concrete ceilings contrast with the paneled wall detailing, a reflection of the innovative menus developed by head chef, Rowan Larkin. Dedicated to showcasing fresh, and overlooked local ingredients from Kwa-Zulu Natal. Sourcing ethical produce from small-scale farmers and fishermen. Everything from hand-crafted pies to sourdough bread, charcuterie, and preserve are all made in-house. Dinner consists of a tasting menu of small dishes. Seasons dictate what an average day in the kitchen is like, and this reflects in the menu changing up. This dedication is where Rowan truly flaunts his culinary craftsmanship and passion. Making the unassuming journey worth it. To fully experience our ever-evolving menu, we encourage guests to arrive with an open mind.

We were fortunate to enjoy a wine pairing evening at Maha, on the Durban Point Waterfront, this week, and it was a 5 star experience. Fantastic, fun evening with truly superb food, and excellent Wine pairings from Morgenster. Recommend you check the events calendar of this venue, and rush to book if you get the opportunity. See you there. !!

Such a gorgeous cafe! Beautifully designed interior with a peaceful atmosphere and lots of big open space. Amazing service from the waiters and people working there. Our coffee was delicious and it came with a tasty biscuit on the side - a nice extra touch. And the FOOD was just incredible. I ordered the salmon and scrambled eggs on toast and it was one of the best I’ve ever had. Perfectly cooked a seasoned eggs, fresh good quality salmon, and wholemeal sourdough toast on the side (which I LOVE because then it doesn’t go soggy from the eggs) We only had one our to spend in Durban but it was an hour well spent here! Highly recommend this lovely spot. Thank you Maha!

This restaurant is situated in the heart of Durbans Point Waterfront area, a leaps step away from the newly developed Promenade along and the world renowned Golden Mile . It is a favourite hangout for locals, cyclists, beach goers and visitors from “up the hill”. The decor is a stunning mix of minimalism, industrial chic, while still being very comfortable and calming. Every table provides access to the beautiful Durban beachfront breeze. Diners waiting for a table are invited to wait on a cozy sofa, while ordering a drink from their extensive while list, speciality teas and graft beers. I opted for a Appletini cocktail, which was a perfect start to my dinning experience, suggested by my waiter. The menu offers a wide variety of delicious and mouthwatering starters which are presented in a light tapas/ small plates offering- giving you the opportunity to taste a wide variety of dishes without denting the wallet or have you feeling a couple of kilos heavier! Not forgetting the main courses and the Chefs Specials that will appeal to youngsters and adults alike. The manger informed us of the newly appointed Chef and his experience and passion with Asian flavours, I was sold on his recommendation to try a few well paired dishes. My wife and I shared the Fried Oysters to start- followed by smoked trout with cracker bread, the pork dumplings ( some of the best I have ever had ), pork belly and the seared tuna. They were all exquisite. It was all followed by a very tempting caramel and nut cheese cake that had been eyeballing me and I’m sure I heard whispering my name the entire meal. Just one of the options off their wide variety of counter sweets and pastries. Everything we ate was fresh and delicious. It’s clear to see the Chef believes in quality ingredients to produce dishes that are simply delightful. The restaurant also offers a wonderful drinks menu, and they offer some amazing wine options. The drinks are as affordable as the food menu. From the authentic front of house servers to the delicious food and the atmosphere, this place is brilliant. I highly recommend this restaurant.

I went to the cafe with a friend and although the staff were fantastic, the chef was "having a tantrum" as the waitress put it. My falafel dish was totally burnt, inedible and it was served to me still. I am not one to complain or write reviews like this but my food was comparable to a charcoal block. This was my first and last visit to your establishment.

Shocking! I took my mom there on Sunday for her 83rd birthday. We put in our order and after an hour I finally managed to get the attention of a waitress who informed me they had ‘forgotten’ to put our order through and that it would take another 20mins! In that hour not once did our waitress ask us if we needed anything. When the food did eventually come 1.5 hours after placing our order it was terrible. My houlumi salad consisted of a blog of cheese in the middle of my plate covered in micro greens. My moms food looked like they’d run out of filling so it was only half full. Second time I’ve had a thoroughly unenjoyable experience- NEVER AGAIN! Also, the swearing coming from the kitchen when there were small children in the restaurant is unacceptable- beware…

Have just had breakfast with friends at Maha. What an amazing place!! Seriously delicious food, unusual (but in a very good way) breakfast options. Vegans will be very happy too. Very good cappuccino and iced coffee (not easy to find in Durban). Beautiful decor which creates a lovely peaceful place to sit and enjoy good food and company. We shared 3 dishes and by far the best taste I have had for breakfast in a long time was the Zucchini pancakes with the sugar pea hummus..(vegan), the other 2 very tasty dishes were the sourdough crumpets with mushrooms and almond cream cheese and sourdough crumpets with smoked salmon, poached egg and elderflower caper and chive butter sauce. The portions were very decent and although I am sure Durbanites will complain at the price, I honestly believe for the type of food and size of the portions the price was absolutely fair. Its was such a delightful treat. Yes it's at the very end of Point road... but so worth the drive. Lovely staff and the owner was attentive and quite a laugh! Please go and treat yourself and tell all your friends!!

This cafe is very funky, lovely decor. The food is on another level and is phenomenal. I have been a few times for breakfast, lunch and dinner because the food is that good. The menu is fresh (all in house made) with a bit of an Asian influence. Some really good flavour combinations. The menu appeals to everyone, not too overly complicated but some delicious offerings. Chef Rowan Larkin certainly knows what he is doing. You can also buy delicious goodies from the counter and yes my bill was a bit hefty because everything just looked so good from home baked pies, bread, cakes, donuts, quiches etc. They also tasted that good too. Staff are friendly and they brew a mean cup of coffee. Highly recommend you visit this lovely cafe.

There is nothing that compares to the food at Maha cafe. It is out of this world. It is like going to food heaven. The food here is so magical, I have even thought of relocating to Durbs, just so I can eat there every day. Their sausage roll (and I am sure the other pies as well) was the best I have EVER had. You could taste it was made with real meat, lots of care, and that lattice pastry - oh my! Make sure to try the breakfast butty - it will blow your mind. The fact that it also sports a stunning interior and great service is just a bonus. I would walk through broken glass to eat here again. If you don't like this place - I don't think you are able to enjoy nice things.

My 4th visit for breakfast/brunch. I honestly believe Maha is hands down the best place to eat in Durban for breakfast and lunch. Such delicious food and very decent portions and well priced. The unusual (as in very very good) food combinations are such a treat. Has the best offerings for vegetarians and vegans. Even though I am not one myself I have always gone for those options as they are so good. The decor is also so lovely and it's spacious and airy so you don't feel like you are sitting in a restaurant. There is seating outside too. Treat yourself!!

I am so fortunate that this restaurant is not a long drive from my home. Maha is my favourite restaurant. I am always delighted with my food. Melt in the mouth flavours which keeps me coming back over and over again whether it is for breakfast, lunch or dinner. It is that good. Menu changes on a daily basis ensuring only the freshest and seasonal ingredients used. Good selection of wines to accompany your meal. Service is friendly.

Guys, this place is awesome! We loved our date night here, would definitely go again. The food was delicious AND they change the menu all the time(they told us they keep the favourites the same) which is really exciting when you know it's going to be good. We did the tasting menu, HIGHLY recommend!

So I've visited Maha Cafe twice now, once for a besties birthday breakfast, was a bit disappointed that they had the standard breakfast options and no pancakes or crumpets, need to speak to the friendly Chef Rowan Larkin, to see if he is able to accommodate me next time I visit. The apple martini we had is a must try. It's situated at the Point Waterfront area, on Saturdays and Sundays you can take a stroll to the ocean promenade, it's got ample parking. When we did our Grub Club Ladies dinner on a mid week Wednesday safe parking. Ambience was open spacious clutter free, very lit up. Didn't get the mixologist name but most ladies had the bitter peach cocktail with gin and it made us feel real peachy. Chef Rowan did a special Asian fusion 2 course dinner for us. Special Grub Club menus printer off with type writer text. I chose the Truffle mushroom ravioli as a starter it was buttery pasta was smooth and dense at the same time, garnished with a brittle seaweed for crunch. My main was the Szechuan style lamb noodle, it was spicy so flavourful and the aubergine and lamb fusion was just an unexpected combination with pumpkin seeds for crunch. Having Chef Rowan add that extra touch of explaining each of the other course options was what every culinary geek like myself was so impressed by. Having the Chef connect with you on a one on one was even more special for me. Chef Rowan is new to the dining scene but he's passion and exploration of flavors, and meat veg combinations and more so his technique of curing, crunchy, spicy fusions really makes his signature dishes special and a culinary treat. Give Maha Cafe a try you will be amazed the talent we have right on our doorsteps. Super proud to have had Chefs Rowan meals, and swapped our culinary tastes and travels.

Maha is an elegant yet casual cafe that we love to frequent. Being welcomed by the smell of freshly baked pastries and bread never gets old. The coffee is always delicious and the food is special and spectacular. Local and fresh ingredients are their priority so the menu changes all the time. Maha really has something for everyone, including dogs, kids, and connoisseurs!!!

Been to maha cafe for the first time today. Beautiful place, amazing vibe, met the chef as well he's such a cool guy. However above all the great things I just mentioned the food stole the show !!! I had an iced white chocolate with a veg focacia(which happens toe be vegan friendly) And my mom had an amazing gluten free chocolate brownie. It was out of this world!! The best focacia and brownie I've ever tasted! I'd definitely go back there.
